Sorry, this is urban legend. Don't see anything, that "fancy new banks" deliver, I can't use right now at the Sparkasse. There never was any technology, that wasn't supported. NFC payment for example, I'm using contact less payments with my cards for much longer time as my coworkers at other private banks.

In the last 20 years I tried Deutsche Bank, comdirect, HVB, DKB, Postbank (they REALLY suck...), ... now back at my local Spaßkasse (as I call them) and I have everything I want and need. Good Apps, functioning Banking Site, etc. If somebody don't like this bank, that's ok. As I would never ever get back to Postbank or HVB again, but the ongoing "they're old and last century and bla" is just rubbish.

Perhaps it's the exact opposite. i.e. the Sparkassen didn't start an own NFC-payment system for mobilephones but Deutsche Bank and Postbank did for Android. So, just a thought, it's not the Sparkassen that slowdown Apple Pay negotiations but Deutsche Bank Postbank do, so they can collect more customers until Apple Pay starts?

Just wondering ;)
I don’t know how much you’re into the banking scene, but you should know that Sparkasse is bringing their own Android NFC payment app with GIROCARD support in June, which again is an island solution, Insellösung as we would say it.

As there is neither Google Pay nor any other "central payment solution" on Android in Germany and Google gives them the freedom to choose and to use NFC on their own, I don't see this as bad or a problem.

This is not more or less a Insellösung or isolated application than the Postbank Mobile Payment within their Postbank Banking App (https://www.postbank.de/privatkunde...mobile-payment-mit-dem-finanzassistenten.html) or Deutsche Bank Mobile Payment within their App (https://www.deutsche-bank.de/pfb/content/pk-lp-mobile-app-2.html)

;)

that's what i think, sparkassen are the blocking part in the apple pay germany scenario
If this is so, the other banks are also "blocking" because they started their own solutions.

Well, their solutions are based on Visa and MasterCard respectively, not on a standard that is locked to only one country. Even if they use their own to realize this solution, it is still compatible internationally.
Also, take French banks as an example. They’ve created a French-based NFC payment solution for Android that supports Visa, MasterCard AND CB, their own national payment system based on Visa.
But that hasn’t stopped them from offering their homemade solution for Android and Apple Pay for iPhone users.

why should they limit their NFC App on Android to credit cards as most of their customers have girocards and even don't want credit cards at all? They even issue NFC girocards and so their NFC payment solution for Android will support girocards.

So this is not bad at all but consequent and good for their customers in the first place, because girocard is the main card system in Germany. It would not be a good idea to tell your customers "hey, you can pay with your smartphone ... but before you have to get a credit card. here's the contract."

This is something, Apple has to deal with in Germany anyway. People don't have and mostly don't want credit cards. Apple Pay has to support girocard in Germany or it is d.o.a.

exactly. there are "home made solutions" at several banks and a "nation locked" own payment system. Apple Pay is nevertheless supported. the one thing does not exclude the other.

so I don't see the logic behind the argument "they will start an Android App in June, so they won't support Apple Pay". If this was a valid logic, Apple Pay did not start in any other country than the US and perhaps UK ;)
[doublepost=1517862886][/doublepost]PS: the Sparkassen "Wallet" will work worldwide and also support MasterCard. So ... I really don't see the "Insellösung" ;)

Exactly what I wanted to say as well. I meant that if they won’t support Android Pay for their Android users, but use their own solution, that doesn’t mean they can’t cooperate with Apple for their iOS users and add support for Apple Pay.

This is also why I think Apple Pay will/has to come to Germany this year. There is no way that Sparkasse will only launch a solution just for their Android users, the backlash from Apple users would just be too big. Also, as mentioned here multiple times, 2018 is THE YEAR for contactless/card payments in Germany. PSD2 has gotten rid of extra charges for card payments as well as limited the prices for retailers to 0.2% and 0.3% for Debit and credit card payments respectively.

another app-update by N26. Last one was a week ago. They really seem to work on stuff...
Major update 4.0 will probably come soon too - maybe along with iOS 11.3 and ApplePay in March?

N26 App doesn’t need any update to enable Apple Pay. Their app is already compatible with it as they’re offering Apple Pay in France, Italy, Spain and Finland already.

Why should N26 need a big Update for AP, afaik they already support it in other markets. So it should not be much more than changing a "0" to a "1".

Edit: Ok I was to late @kkrdvc

A big update doesn't necessarily mean big in size, it could also mean big in news. Not that I think AP will launch soon in the mentioned countries, just adding a bit of fuel to the fire ;)
