i have read that the more credit cards a consumer possess the more likely they are to be in debt and deeper in debt. Store credit cards are known for having the higher interest rates than bank issue cards.

Correlation does not imply causation. Besides, it’s probably the other way around. The more debt someone has, the more credit cards they are likely to seek out.

Plus, you can get a debit RedCard if you don’t want to open another credit card.

This is actually worse than Wal-Mart pay. I do use Wal-mart pay, and I pretty much exclusively use self checkout there. What I do like is that I can walk up to the register, scan its QR Code then put my phone away and checkout and leave. With Target's process, it looks like you need to wait till the end. Which means you need to be fumbling with your phone during the checkout process and have it ready at the end. Also it looks like coupons get saved in a separate area....why not just load them all into your cartwheel ID? Now you'll need to scan individual coupons first, then Apply Cartwheel and Pay?

Looks like gift cards will be moved over into the wallet. My app says Gift Cards coming soon....not like shown in the pic here. So if I had gift cards and a RED Card, how would I get my Cartwheel discount but pay with my gift cards? Since the Cartwheel Scan seems to also link to paying with your RED Card? Unless there will be an option to use gift card balances first, then RED Card. Still a very clunky flow. But I guess better than when they had separate apps for coupons and Cartwheel and then no way to pay. I still think a Walgreens like Loyalty and ApplePay solution would be better than this mess....and they would get their consumer data that they seem to want.

I wish I could just use my REDcard with Apple Pay, since I don't like taking up valuable wallet space for a card I only use in one store, but this is an OK compromise. I tried it out yesterday and it was cool how you just had to scan for your Cartwheel offers and then it would automatically process the payment. Since I'm already scanning Cartwheel most times, this actually saves a lot of time and is way better than using the chip reader.

My biggest complaint is that if I want to use a different card, I have to go into the app and deactivate my REDcard before scanning Cartwheel. I feel like there should be an easier way to choose your payment option, like having the terminal confirm if you want to use REDcard or pay with cash/a different card.

Apple needs to development an integration point so customers who choose to use Apple Pay can use Apple Pay, use NFC to complete the payment, and pass a URL which is authenticated against the installed application which presumably has the customers saved username/password. This is not an impossible problem to solve.

No thanks... esp. after the huge data breach, they still want full access to checking account with Red Debit Card. (Or you'll have to open another line of credit just to use their payment system/app)

I used it the other day and I liked how I could pay and use any coupons on Cartwheel all at the same time. Plus I have the Target debit card and I’d rather save my 5% than use my regular debit card with Apple Pay and not save my 5%.

Yes, and Target likes that they have a full pictures of your (and many others') shopping habits. This helps them to sell more and ensure that their stores carry the correct mix of products. Target also uses the 5% incentive to get you (and many others) to shop there and check prices less. Finally, Target doesn't need to pay the 2+% that the credit card companies charge them. It's definitely a win for Target. Apple Pay is nice for the consumer, but the Target app is much, much nicer for Target.

Started using this last week. Our Target store is the main testing store for them so it tends to have all the updates first. Downside is that things are always moving around and they're always changing something as they try new things and see what works.

Well this doesn't surprise me. Target is a huge chain doing well despite many other huge chains suffering greatly at the hands of Amazon et al. They are not going to give up valuable leverage. How all this goes depends on whether their customers play along or hold out. We'll see.

Yeah! Good idea Target! Let's just make more apps and make things even more complicated for the customers. Let's just download an app for each store we shop at so that we can use their version of mobile payment instead of just using one universal method.

I wish companies would get it through their heads that we should STANDARDIZE stuff like this and let EVERYONE use it. Imagine if USB were exclusive to Apple or having to buy a samsung video player to play samsung discs instead of blu-ray. Imagine if each company had it's own movie format? Oh, I want a certain movie, but it's not available for my specific device... darn.

Everyone needs to use ONE THING.

Complex? Open the app. Scan the barcode. Let’s not get foolish here.

Target builds that same profile of you if you use your credit or debt card. Only way you're preventing that from happening is if you only use cash, which no one is going to do.

Who cares if Target doesn't have to pay the 2% credit card processing fee. They pass along 5% savings. What other retailers will give you a discount on all the item you purchase in exchange for not using your card?

But it is.
The "app" from Target for example, would have to allow Apple Pay to communicate with, and manipulate its backend.

I see why these stores make these payment apps.
There's a lot of value in collecting purchase habits of your customers. That's why store rewards cards exist in the first place.
Combining the reward card and payment process into one transaction is smart.
I don't care for it, but I see why they do it.

Apple pay is what I'd like to be the standard. Walmart Pay and Target Pay are useful, but not as convenient. Those apps are slow to adopt accessories like the apple watch. Just let us use Apple Pay. I have started using retailers that support Apple Pay just for that sole reason alone.

Would I prefer they use ApplePay? 100%

Will I use this? 100%

Why? It's one less CC I have to keep in my physical wallet. For me that is a convenience.

I use the Target App in-store all the time to locate items and to find Cartwheel discounts so it's already open and ready to go.

Yeah... not exactly excited about this one.

I get the argument that competition is always good, etc. But the problem here is, you've got all of these "me too" companies who only care about processing their OWN payments. If I go to the trouble to set up Target's app to pay, it won't work ANYWHERE other than Target. Apple Pay is supposed to work anyplace that accepts it. (Apple didn't just make it for buying things at Apple retail stores.)

On top of that, with Target, it looks like you have to already have their "RED" card to use it. So even MORE limited. At least the RED card gives you a discount on their prices. Will they take another few percent off for paying with their app? (I think we know the answer.) But just saying ... there's not really any incentive for me to hassle with entering their data into the app and using it to buy something, vs. just pulling out the actual card it's using and paying directly with it.

Agree... Big Apple Pay fan but used this last night with my Target Debit RedCard and it worked like a charm with FaceID.

If you have a Netflix app, a Hulu app, an Amazon video app and an HBO app on your phone then you are doing it already.
