Would I prefer they use ApplePay? 100%

Will I use this? 100%

Why? It's one less CC I have to keep in my physical wallet. For me that is a convenience.

I use the Target App in-store all the time to locate items and to find Cartwheel discounts so it's already open and ready to go.

Thats the way I see it as well, if I can leave my wallet in the car I am happy. The only time I need anything from my wallet is if I need my drivers license, for OTC medication or alcohol. I use Walmart pay because that is what they use, so I don't have issues with it. I prefer Apple Pay cause it's easier to access than either Walmart Pay or Target Pay.

NFC Payments of whatever sort are rapidly gaining... and I am most surprised that Target is following Walmart, when Target most needs customers.

Amazon is seriously crushing it - if I were to speculate, and nice to see Walmart enter the quick-ship market.

But how has Target innovated recently? Curious and hopeful that they are remaining competitive...
Walmart "Quickship" you must be kidding--I ordered from them on the 28th--they still haven't shipped

“4 times faster” because the fastest payment method we offer is chip & signature, which is already slowed by the terrible terminals.

I have a target near me where it doesn’t even matter - they only open one register, so people with 50 items take up the self checkout lanes (of which one is always out of order.)

Tried this out earlier. Works great. Didn’t find any issues. I like that I don’t have to have my Target card with me if I happen to stop by a Target. I shop there once in a while, never enough to carry the card all the time.

another reason to boycott Target...the first being their idea that hanging a christmas tree upside down is cool (look it up) ...no, its insulting to the Reason for the Season.

That does not sound faster than double clicking my Apple Watch and then holding it up to the reader. I still get comments from people in line when I use Apple Pay, impressed at how quick it is.
Used it, it is definitely NOT faster than a normal checkout. It took longer. Smh

Walmart is dragging their feet too. Frustrating to the customer that they can't use one of a few major payment options.

Yes, and Target likes that they have a full pictures of your (and many others') shopping habits. This helps them to sell more and ensure that their stores carry the correct mix of products. Target also uses the 5% incentive to get you (and many others) to shop there and check prices less. Finally, Target doesn't need to pay the 2+% that the credit card companies charge them. It's definitely a win for Target. Apple Pay is nice for the consumer, but the Target app is much, much nicer for Target.

How is that different from any other store loyalty or shoppers card like what many grocery stores require to get weekly sale prices? Also unless you are paying cash or check (I'll laugh if you say you pay by check unless you are 98) the stores have all your personal data and know your shopping trends.

But Target gives you 5% off on top of sale prices and Cartwheel discounts. Horrible of them! Horrible!

It's not like Target jacks up prices like some stores so they can then offer a non-discount discount. Target's prices are at or below every other retail store, so the 5%+ is real.

I love using ApplePay too, but ApplePay never gave me even a .05% discount for using it. And you don't think Apple isn't tracking purchases? Please tell me again why ApplePay is "nice" for consumer and this isn't? I'm confused. I'd prefer a unified system like everyone else but can't see why people are on the attack here either.

The way Apple software is going these days leads me to believe I should be interested in other manufacturers' apps. LOL :)

Walmart and Target Pay might be frustrating to the customer in an academic discussion type of environment, but in real life they aren't frustrating for the majority of people who actually use the services (at least based on the usage stories in this thread). Several Apple fans in this thread have provided their anecdotal evidence of "yeah, really not that big of a deal" actual usage. Target and Walmart are doing things that benefit Target and Walmart aaaaannnndd Target and Walmart customers. The Apple component hasn't proved itself to be necessary as of yet.

Annoying and inconvenient, but it will work for people who largely shop there and stick with the Red Card.

"I do not largely shop there" but it is just one of many possible destinations (like Costco with VISA) -- with lowest overall cost and fast delivery being king.

And, Target rocks!

If you do have a RED Card, you get 5% off all purchases, free shipping using FedEx or UPS (not lousy USPS), and on top you get gift cards and heavy discounts when sales are in place.

Who cares about the freaking card?
Specially if one shops on-line, with the card remains encrypted under your account?

I particularly couldn't care less about the payment method, as long as the bottom line benefits me and my wife, not a ludicrously-arrogant third party.

I’ll never use a company specific payment service like this or Walmart. Get with times, open to door, and support Apple and Android Pay. Obviously they don’t want to pay merchant fees to Apple, but hey, whatever. I still carry the plastic card around.

i have read that the more credit cards a consumer possess the more likely they are to be in debt and deeper in debt. Store credit cards are known for having the higher interest rates than bank issue cards.

Very true. In the case of the Target Red card there are two options. 1) A traditional credit card and 2) A debit card that is linked to your existing checking account.

I don't shop at Target that often, maybe once a year if that. They're trying to be like Walmart and have their own form of mobile payment.

This is were Samsung beat out Apple. You can use a Samsung S8 and Samsung Pay at just about every terminal, even if it doesn't have NFC. It uses MST to transmit to the terminal that you swipe.

Apple needs to come up with a way of doing the same and also start give reward points like Samsung Pay does.

We should trust Target's credit services? Really? Remember, oh, just two years ago? Most of the big retailers of the Mall era are going to die, slowly and painfully. The only people who LIKE going to malls are the teen girls that Judge Moore liked hanging around in Gadsden, AL. Literally, I'd rather scratch my eyes out than go to a mall, except one with an Apple Store in it.

On the contrary, I think Apple should focus way more on in-app and website use than NFC or MST. The latter may very well become irrelevant if stuff like Amazon Go really takes off.

(Also, as someone who has a new-ish MBP, it sucks that I can only use Apple Pay on the Apple website with it.)

Agreed. I'm already using a physical REDcard as it is, so at least now I don't have to worry about the chip reader inexplicably not reading my card, which seems to happen 7 times out of 10 that I use it unless I rub the chip for good luck.

T still think a Walgreens like Loyalty and ApplePay solution would be better than this mess....and they would get their consumer data that they seem to want.
Walgreens is the best implementation I've seen: ApplePay Walgreens rewards card + ApplePay payments. I just scan my watch twice for each sale, once with my Walgreens rewards card and once with with my credit card. Walgreens is across the street from my office downtown, so I stop in a few times a week for small purchases. And I know when I'm out on a run, I can stop in any Walgreens for an emergency beverage.

I would stop shopping at Target over this ******** payment scheme, if only Walmart weren't so terrible.

I used it the other day and I liked how I could pay and use any coupons on Cartwheel all at the same time. Plus I have the Target debit card and I’d rather save my 5% than use my regular debit card with Apple Pay and not save my 5%.

They easily could have done the same thing with NFC/Apple Pay.

Their app only supports the REDcard, which I presume costs them less to run than a regular debit or credit card. It's why they offer 5% back on Target purchases using it.

Definitely costs them less (maybe nothing?) but takes days to come out of your checking account
