Umm, Apple produces products that people buy. What do banks produce?
Capital used to fund small businesses, a mechanism for people without insane wealth to buy houses, and on and on. Banks are not good guys but they are certainly useful contributors. But I also don’t want them trying to make me use their app to pay instead of Apple Pay.

Still use my CostCo Citi card for gas/fuel as one gets 4% back which now is a lot more with the higher prices. If we buy at the CostCo gas station, you get another percentage as well

You only get 4% back at Costco Gas Stations, you do not get the extra 2% by being an Executive Member. Of course Costco gas is usually a lot cheaper so there's still plenty of savings to be had.

Calculation of 2% Reward

Reward is approximately 2% of pre-tax purchases (less refunds) of most merchandise purchased through: front-end registers, most ancillary business registers at Costco warehouses and Costco websites in the U.S. and Canada by U.S. and Canadian residents and qualifying purchases made directly from Costco Travel once travel is completed. In the U.S., Rewards are not calculated: (i) on purchases of cigarettes or tobacco-related products, gasoline, Costco Shop Cards, postage stamps, alcoholic beverages in certain states (including Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Vermont), prescription purchases in certain states (including Arkansas, New Jersey, and New York), and at food courts; (ii) on membership fees; (iii) on purchases not recorded through Costco's front-end registers and transactions done on or through websites not hosted by Costco even if accessed through Costco.com, including all business, consumer, and insurance services, the Online Photo Center, and the My Publisher website; (iv) on miscellaneous fees, deposits and taxes, including sales tax and shipping; (v) where prohibited by law or regulation; (vi) on purchases made by anyone other than the account's Primary or Primary Household Cardholder; (vii) as to travel purchases: surcharges, gratuities, trip protection, travel purchased through a third party, upgrades, rental car equipment, resort charges and port charges; and (viii) on certain other categories as determined at Costco's discretion, which may change without notice.

I use Apple Pay almost everywhere now. I wish Lowes would get on board but that’s one of the few places I frequent that don’t accept it these days.
And why do NONE of the home improvement places take it. At least with other genres (grocery, department) someone takes it so I can just avoid the ones that don't

Contactless is pretty huge already in the UK, but I must admit, I still don't see many outside London paying for things with their phones.
I've been a day 1 user of Apple Pay and it's by far my favourite method. Going on a trip to Australia I only had to take out a physical card once and never paid with cash the entire time. I guess I'd just like to see better summaries of expenditures and categorisation for budgeting.

There used to be lower limits on straight contactless payments and Tesco, for whatever reason, has always pushed their own daft payment system (a la Walmart, I suppose) instead of properly supporting Apple Pay. I try to avoid Tesco.

Apologies if you were already aware of this but Tesco do now support Apple Pay up to £250.

ACE Hardware takes ApplePay, though they're no real substitute for the HomeDepot/Lowes big box stores

Odd thing is that ApplePay initially worked at HomeDepot until they turned it off.

I had this problem as well until I started going to Tractor Supply as an alternative. Sometimes you have to dictate store policy with your wallet.

Fun Fact: If you use Apple Pay to buy something at a large retailer (like Target), if you decide to return the item, you must have the printed receipt if you hope to get anything but store credit back because there's no way for them to do the normal credit card lookup since Apple Pay randomizes the transaction to disassociate with the physical credit card.

I wish Walmart supported it. The CurrentC scheme was a spectacular flop, so now they want you to use "Walmart Pay". No thanks.
Walmart signed a contract with a burgeoning pay system shortly after Apple announced Apple Pay. Part of the, now void, contract was that they wouldn’t use Apple Pay. The thing with that startup was that they stated, as part of the EULA, that they would grab as much personal information as they could get their hands on (para phrasing).

Someone at Walmart must not like the idea of how Apple Pay doesn’t give any information other than that which is required for the transaction(s).

It's pretty annoying but hopefully they get on board eventually.

Sorry. Not going to lug my iPhone with me into the store every time I want to buy food. That thing is pretty much NEVER in my pocket - thanks no thanks
… and that is why Apple Watch is so practical. During the last year I have used something else (cash, physical cards, iPhone, etc.) less than five times.

Admittedly, Covid has kept me on this side of the Pond, and the situation is different on the other side. (And there are some quite difficult countries in Europe, as well. For example, cards are ok in Belgium but much less so in the Netherlands.)

You certain of this? I’ve purchased items from Target using their app. When I’ve had to return items, they never asked for a printed receipt, just to see the barcode on the app, and the credit would go back to the Apple Card (Mastercard).

Sounds wrong. Much like one time use numbers, the retailer refunds to the random number and it is linked to the real number.

I used it at the local gas station for the first time last week. It felt so strange... *shrug* I was still a little apprehensive...

Yes, the tap-capable upgraded gas pumps are getting fairly common in my area.

Unfortunately, Sams Club Mastercard (5% cash back on fuel) doesn't support being added to ApplePay

Funny coincidence… I used Apple Pay at the local gas station last week, as well. And boy, it felt so strange.

No, not the payment part. But pouring smelly dead dinosaurs into the tank of the rental van felt odd.

Fortunately, AP works with charging stations, as well.

(And, in case you wonder, this obnoxious attitude is handed to all EV owners with the car keys. Don’t take it too seriously.)

Oh, I did have a Prius a while ago. I finally got the clue in how to make it get stellar gas mileage. Use the cruise control! Not only did it drive the wife crazy, but I actually drove the long way across the state, and back, including a bunch of destination driving too. My current 'car' loves those dead dinosaur tears. I can get there, but have to fill up, and twice more to get home if I do any amount of driving while there. It hurts, believe me... Final peak on the Prius was something just over 45 MPG. You just have to be in no rush to get that mileage. It surprised the dealership though...

Not that it was full electric...

Me too. Although I don't like how the original charge just disappears with no notification of that happening. I'd rather just have the refund as a line item with + instead of - for the amount
