Just curious, does anyone here solely rely on Apple Pay, or carry a Debit & Credit card with them as backup?
I do. My physical card has been "altered" with a $0.50 USD piece of sandpaper. No mag-stripe, CC number, Expiration date, CVV code and Name. Obviously, store this info in a secure place [password manager] before altering. It's a chip card and if it were lost, the most that can be done is to dip-the-chip or tap-to-pay. I have a 6-digit PIN (Wells Fargo) that protects me from "some" debit transactions. Yes, it's not foolproof, but it does minimize my attack surface.
Also, it lives in my wallet in a nice aluminum foil wrap to keep it from being accessed wirelessly by hooligans. So far so good. 8+ years since my number has been compromised.
It only presents an issue when I visit the handful (literally) of places that don't accept AP or contactless. For those merchants I have two choices: 1) Don't patronize them or 2) Carry cash if I really like their products [i.e. "...they have the best hamburgers, pizza, etc."].
Why the extreme of removing the mag-stripe and printed information?
Mag-stripe - It's not encrypted and it's trivial to clone.
Other information - Think about it, when your card is out of your custody it's simple for anyone to snap a picture of the card information and thus "use" the card as a CNP (Card not Present) type transaction. Even your card sitting on a counter while you wrap up your purchase provides an opportunity to have a photo snapped of the card information.
Now excuse me as my tin-foil hat needs adjustment. <wink>
