PayWave/PayPass has been really commonplace here in Australia for the past few years, most shops, restaurants and cafes have the machines. Wouldn't be hard for Apple to get it going down here but still no announced launch timeframe yet :(

Can't wait for it to come here!

I don't think that would be an issue but I have a million things in my wallet aside from cards-coupons, receipts, punch cards...I don't know that I could toss the wallet even if apple pay was useable at many stores

:apple: Pay will not replace my wallet but make payments hassle free, faster & secure

----------

I love the idea of it however the reality of it within the UK remains a mystery. If anyone can push it I think Apple can. Only time will tell.

Yup it's definitely coming to Europe in 2015 with collaborations with Visa Europe & MasterCard

I just got this back from my Credit Union:

Thank you for your message. The announcement of the Apple Wallet along with Apple Pay was made public on September 9th and since then we have been working diligently to learn all the details. We are currently reviewing the Apple Pay platform and what will be required by the Credit Union and our members to participate with this service. As it is very new technology, we have concerns with the security of the platform ? how do we ensure that Apple is truly securing your card data within their device. The launch of the iPhone6 and 6Plus devices along with iOS8 has not been smooth. Apple is still working to stabilize the platform. Additionally we know that Apple will charge fees to the card issuing financial institution for participation along with additional fees from Visa. We want to make sure we totally understand the financial ramifications of these fees and how we can protect the membership in a long term contract relationship.
Apple is scheduled to make the Apple Wallet available through an iOS update sometime mid - October but there will be limited locations that will accept Apple Pay as a payment option. Your credit union debit and credit cards will still work at these merchants ? you will not be prevented from accessing your accounts with SECU although you will not be able to pay with Apple Pay. We will continue our discussions with Apple and Visa until we believe our members best interest are protected. It is our goal to ensure you have access to your accounts and the ability to make payments through whatever channel you choose ? but we must ensure it is done securely! Stay tuned!

Sorry it is long

That's very interesting. It makes sense, though, Apple has been blundering a little here and there. I would like to have my personal safely ensured first before using the pay

Is this North Carolina SECU? Because failure to support ApplePay would be just another reason I refuse to make this my main personal default checking account. I might have to send an e-mail to them.

Yes NC State Employees Credit Union

Solve back problems!!

Apple Pay will be solving my back problems!!

Ok, actually I already have thanks to my chiropractor. He showed me my x-rays and my right hip actually sits up higher out of line due to my wallet. Since I stopped carrying my wallet and have been receiving adjustments, I am back straight and my back has felt better than it has in years.

Currently, I leave my wallet in my vehicle and just grab whatever card I need when I go in somewhere. I usually grab my drivers license too in case they ask for it. With ApplePay, I won't need either. I can still leave my wallet in the car for the occasional problem with the system. I only shop at about 10 different places so I will know which ones will require me to still carry my card and which ones wont.

I can see how some see this as useless while others see the many benefits it has. My back health see's it as a benefit. You know the old saying:

An ApplePay a day keeps the Chiropractor away.

Some large trashy retailers such as WalMart and BestBuy aren't supporting this industry standard intentionally... Because they gather your PAN for customer tracking by storing, tracking, running algorithms and selling such statistics to their partners.

Both of these stores are pushing MCX CurrentC, a loyalty/payment program that you tie your bank account directly to. They want your info and statistics, which ApplePay/VISA's EMVco tokenization buffers from them.

MCX was created by retailers, Target and Best Buy amongst them. That is likely the reason that they aren't jumping on board with Apple Pay.

if it's anywhere I happen to shop, I'll most certainly will use it. But at this point, it seems you'll have to search for it rather than it be at any store you commonly shop.

What about if you get pulled over, or you get carded at a bar? Your drivers license would be where?

If you are going to a bar, logic dictates you bring an ID with you. Kind of like going to the airport. A physical ID is a must. But for usual daily activities, it is not required.

If you get pulled over, a physical ID is not required as long as a cop can pull and verify your data via his computer. If he can not, you could be detained until he can verify your identity. You can not be arrested though, only detained for a 'reasonable' amount of time.

I will always carry a wallet, and always have my id. I just feel that it is the smart thing to do, even though I've never been pulled over, or plan to go on a plane anytime soon. I just think that it's good to keep those thing on you. Plus, my phone has died while I am out and about before. What happens when you are relying on your phone to pay for you and whatever you are doing, and you discover the battery is dead?

I think the issue is getting the banks onboard. The retail infrastructure shouldn't need much changing if you've already got NFC widespread

I will not be using Apple Pay since I reverted back to my 5s. I'm sure I will eventually use it, but as of now, I'm in no rush.

Most major banks have said that they're interested, just waiting for direction from Apple at this stage. Hopefully apple won't make up wait too long but I have a feeling they're gonna focus on rolling this out in the States first and iron out the glitches.

This sounds like they don't know enough about it and are afraid. But trust me, if the big banks like Bank of America or Chase thought there was any hint of losing money on this or being insecure, they wouldn't be on board. This has already been thought through.

the banks are already on board.

The big banks, there are a lot more banks than what are listed - and they aren't as quick to jump on board.

The fact that the big ones have vetted it and deemed it secure should help - but depending on the cost to implement on the smaller banks side it could be a sticking point.

Thankfully my local Credit unions timeline doesn't impact me - my main bank is on board. I haven't even asked the local one about it to be honest... I don't want to get frustrated with their answer.

Most banks use debit cards with the Visa MasterCard logo on it so by default they already except :apple:Pay

Incorrect. The banks have to modify their payment acceptance systems.

In a normal swipe or chip/pin transaction, the (actual) credit card number is sent to the bank, who charges the appropriate account.

With Apple Pay, the bank and the iPhone agree on a Device Account Number, which is the number that is sent to the bank, along with a one-time cryptogram. The bank's systems have to be programmed to handle and accept all of this, authenticating the cryptogram and converting the Device Account Number into the actual cardholder's account number that is billed.
