Congress needs to standardize the payments system or do something so that the actual format used to exchange data is open source such that Apple can't monopolize this. I believe that this is already the case, b/c apple pay is using the ordinary credit card data + some token.

But if Apple's talking about creating some proprietary system to eliminate credit card altogether, that's a big problem unless they're forced to make it open source.

If it's got an NFC reader, any nfc-compliant device should be able to process your payments by law. Apple or google or whoever else can compete for which device or service I use, but the core spec must be free and open to all.

It is not acceptable if b/c of Apple's popularity, you will have to be forced to own an iphone in order to do payments of the future.
No one is forcing iPhone to be the payments of the future. If you can use your iPhone there, your Android or Windows phone will work fine.

Android users can use either Google Wallet or ISIS/Softcard
windows phone has Microsoft Wallet
And even BB has one

Wrong. I worked at Walmart and the self checks have Ingenicos with no NFC, and the manned cashiers have the new Mx915 with NFC. This inconsistency is why Walmart is not promoting it.

Now I understand. I went to the self checkouts next time I will try the Manned Cashiers!

Thank you!

I just tried Apple pay for the first time today.

So super simple. I went to Office Depot. I just took my phone out, brought it up about a foot from the NFC terminal, the lock screen immediately showed my credit card and the amount to charge. I touched the Touch ID button. That's it. Charged. The lady gave me my receipt, and I was done.

No going into apps, nothing. Just there immediately on a locked phone. I will definitely use this all the time. Apple has a true winner here. Bye, bye touching the credit card terminal, to choose 'credit', swiping the card, it asking 'Is this amount okay?' then clicking 'OK', then signing.

I wonder if I have more than 1 credit card that can be used how it works? Are both shown and you swipe/pick between them?

How does this work on Google Wallet? Is the card on the lock screen as well? Is it verified with a passcode? Do you need to sign or transact with the credit card terminal in any way?

When you raise your phone to the terminal don't place your finger on Touch ID. It'll bring up other cards for you to select from.

How long ago was this? All of the walmarts in my area have been upgraded.

That's an MX860 reader, not an MX915. I'll take a picture of one that does actually work when I get to Walmart either later today or tomorrow. But these are the ones my Walmart has, and NFC works! You tap the top of the iPhone to the screen of the Mx915

No contactless payment wifi-ish logo so we know to geek out? BOOOO

Looks like we're all going to become "terminal nerds", memorizing every oddball terminal that supports NFC but doesn't look like it.. LOL

Loosen your tinfoil hat, buddy. Apple Pay is just NFC with some extra security. Anyone could implement the same thing.

Unfortunately no symbol at all. My local grocery store Basha's is this way too. Just tap the iPhone anyway, and all is well, voila, it works! Sad because not having the symbol makes people think the store does not have NFC. Hopefully once Chip & PIN is on, they'll at least change the verbiage to Swipe/Tap/Insert, because the words on the screen at Basha's just say Slide Card!

At Walmart it says Insert or Slide, but I tapped, four green circles popped up on the terminal, and it worked, iPhone dinged, and the terminal beeped!

You can't just look for the symbol anymore, you pretty much do have to be a terminal nerd.

Ooh, this thread is interesting. I wish Apple would get the word out, though, not every Apple customer is on Macrumors!

Not that it matters for me, lol.. Who knows when it'll come to Canada.

Apple won't because they're all about simple. Telling people that it only works on a Verifone Mx915 or 925 isn't the Apple way.

Also Apple missed a lot of stores that Apple Pay works great at like:
-CVS
-Lots of Mom & Pop businesses that take NFC through a terminal like the FD Terminal, or Chase Paymentech
-Lots of local grocery stores like local regional chains like, Basha's, Aj's Fine Foods, and Food City here in Arizona.
-Big O Tires
-Gas Stations like Circle K, or Shell stations when you go inside
-Many Taxi cabs like Discount Cab, Yellow Cab, VIP here in AZ
-NYC cabs
-Even my DENTIST, has a Chase Paymentech terminal WITH NFC
-Public Transportation systems all over the U.S., take contact less payments
-a small number of Walmarts

But because these stores aren't super-huge mega corps like Walmart, or mcD's, Apple didn't mention it, but I can vouch that Apple Pay works great at all of these. It could also be because many of these are specific to regions, so it'll be a mess to list them all. It IS possible but not feasible to live entirely using Apple Pay if one would want to. At least in my state, I can think of every category of business taking NFC, from dentists, to pool cleaning guys. It's because nobody noticed it before until Apple Pay came out.

That is one the Walmart I go to has.... I will have to try see if it works when Apple Pay becomes available for my debit/credit cards.

My Walmart has these. I am going to try it this week.

These are the only ones that'll work with Apple Pay at Walmart. As promised above here's a picture.

Rite-Aid

Just tried it at Rite-Aid. They've gone out of their way to say "Apple Pay is not Supported".

They've got everything necessary to just accept an NFC Payment, but they are actively discriminating against Apple Pay, because - ********s.

Did it work? Or did the screen literally say Apple Pay not supported? From what I know Google Wallet worked fine there.

It does not work there. Tried today at riteaid and cashier said the screen told her to use another form of payment.

Such a shame when a system that should work doesnt because they gimped it for whatever reason (probably to try and implement their own virtual wallet so they can track your sales better.)

If that's the case, take your business to either CVS or Walgreens.

As an employee, you know Target has more important things going on now to worry about Apple Pay in store.

It could be argued that since Target has lost a lot of reputation as the result of leaking personal information of its customers and thus enabling fraud on a huge scale (which costs those customers time and aggravation as they deal with fraud and card replacements), enabling a tokenised, secure payment system that works with standard NFC terminals and also has biometric authentication should be a very high priority.

Sadly, they seem more interested in the CurrenC system which, I believe, not only doesn't work with credit cards (which are a buffer against financial loss due to fraud) but requires connection to a bank account, which is very, very, very insecure.

That seems to me the opposite of what Target should be doing right now, and I say that not due to any Apple bias -- I'd like to see Google Wallet's tokenization more widely supported for Android users -- but sadly, someone's probably getting a big bonus or payoff from CurrenC for this.

i have to say i am a little surprised target is not on board with NFC payments.
