Is there a way to just use Touch ID for Apple Pay and not for unlocking the phone? I don't want to use a passcode or Touch ID to unlock, but Touch ID is required for Apple Pay

Is there a reason you dont want to use touch id?

Is your Wells Fargo Visa a debit or credit ?
It's coded as a debit, at least in the confirmation email that WF sent this afternoon. It's a debit card, money comes out immediately. But I've used it as a credit (with sig not pin) before, money still comes out immediately of course. I'll have to try it at Walgreens to see if it defaults to 'debit sorry need your pin as well' or if it will be smart enough to run without pin.

Chase Debit card.

Just used at Walgreens. Reader picked up the card on the phone, phone asked for fingerprint, then had to put pin number into the machine and go through the litany of questions about approving the purchase.

The only observable difference was not having to swipe my card.

I'm not asked at setup for the card whether to use it as debit or credit or I would choose credit.

Anybody else also have to put pin and whatnot into the reader?
Putting in a pin seems unnecessary but I guess it would be good if you wanted cash back.

As a tip for anyone trying to find merchants to try Apple Pay out at, the MasterCard Nearby app is pretty handy. It's free in the App Store and revealed far more merchants than I would've expected that support contactless payment. Hopefully the list they give is up to date!

Couldn't agree more! Apparently, a bunch of local owned businesses in my area accept NFC too! Also, for anyone wondering how to make a credit purchase at wall greens, when it asks for your pin, there is a button on the bottom left hand corner of the screen that reads "credit", just push that and it will not require a pin number, for me, my regular pin never worked, so all I can make is credit purchases.

I bought chocolate and dental floss at Walgreen's to test Apple Pay. (I figured they'd cancel each other out.) Worked flawlessly and instantaneously. Didn't have to enter a pin... Pressed the TouchID, then pressed an "OK" button on the terminal, and we were done. It took longer for the receipt to print than anything else.

Funny story: this Walgreen's is less than a mile from Georgia Tech. I was the fourth person in line. Three of us were testing Apple Pay. :)

Just used it at Whole Foods, Oakland. The employee said she had no idea how it worked. I had no idea how it works. I put my phone up against the terminal, the price came up, and I used TouchID to authenticate the payment. Took about .8 seconds total.

OK, I have two card from banks that support Apple Pay, or so you'd think. Ends up they don't. WHAT?!?!?! Yes, they don't. Apparently they don't care about higher security or customer ease of transactions. This is an outrage, and totally unacceptable. When are these banks going to wake up! (yeah, I know I know....)

Turns out only "certain cards" are supported. Probably due to fees and associated user agreements etc etc. This was supposed to be a good thing, security and all, but turns out the banks are using it to arm twist their customers. I'm not happy.

Not in the list of current banks or even the UPCOMING ones...

Don't be too naïve. Even though the bank supports it doesn't mean you particular card does... It's seeming to me to be a bit of a bad situation for consumers right now...

I'm in Australia at the moment and will be moving back to NY next year, which means the Apple Pay settings are entirely missing for me. I feel like it would've been useful to still provide the option for those who travel internationally and have credit cards.

My closest Starbucks doesn't have NFC terminals yet. So much for being an Apple Pay "partner." Worked great when I used it at Walgreens.

From all that I am reading here, Walgreens had higher than normal profits today. :D

I would bet most of the 500 banks will have this working by black friday. They don't want to miss out on that revenue.

Without unlocking, it uses your 'default card.' Which you can choose in settings. If you want to use a different card from your default card, you'll need to open passbook and select the card you want to use.
Not according to the FAQ on Apple support page. It says hold the phone to the terminal without touching home button. Then the app opens and you chose the card. I haven't tried it yet.

First of all why did you have to press "OK" on the terminal? Was it a debit card thing?

And on another note, good thing it is Halloween season because Walgreens is going to sell a boat load of candy as people test Apple Pay. But I never though about them canceling it out with Dental Floss :) Really can you imagine the number of small purchases they are going to have this week.

Does anyone feel comfortable enough to pay for something besides a candy bar, (and Dental Floss of course)? A large $50.00-$1000.00 item say?

I was so excited to find out that apple phones would finally be getting nfc capabilities, and when i downloaded 8.1 i was even more excited...only to find out that NONE of my cards were compatible with it, NONE!!! Thanks TD Bank and Discover.

I just bought some beer and some food at Stater Brothers
The bill was for $54.18 and i had no issues!

Even the cashier was like ... "Oh cool :apple:Pay works here"

might have gotten double charge!

went to walgreens... bought some items

place my phone near the pad. card pop up. finger on touch id. delayed as the cashier looks confused. place the phone on the pad again. then it asked for PIN. entered pin receipt start printing.... okay coool... i guess.

got my stuff and left. look at passbook. it only shows san francisco, Ca in last transaction and -- for amount. uh oh.

check my bank account. shows two transaction identical name/location and amount. aahhhh f#$@. still processing, so i'm gonna call my bank if they both get posted.

anyone else?

Is McDonald's Apple Pay only inside or do they have it through drive thru too?

Is there a reason you dont want to use touch id?

I do a lot of app testing with Xcode and every time I deploy to the iPhone i have to enter my code or use Touch ID, I'm talking about 2-3 times per minute, but with passcode deactivated it just unlocks automatically.

By the end of the month, the Chase Amazon card should be available to use in Apple pay...according to Chase. Guess we will have to wait a couple of weeks.

----------

Interesting...I was told by the end of the month. Hope you are right!

I've read other places that chase is Blaming Amazon and Amazon is blaming chase. I believe Chase first since they have other cards already supported. I emailed Amazon complaining and got the standard canned sorry email but no mention of a date.

Same here...there is a discussion on the Apple forums regarding the topic. I also sent an email, posted on Amazon's Facebook page, and posted on Amazon's own customer forum my displeasure with their decision. I am going to give them a little time to fix this, but if they don't, I will be utilizing a different card.

Did you notice if there is an option to pick credit on the screen before you use Apple Pay? Since most bank debit cards are also Visa/MC, I would think you could do it without a pin. It seems excessive to have to use a pin with :apple:Pay

Of course, why not? It's no different than sliding the card.

Actually, just the opposite. Apple Pay is WAY more secure than sliding a card (which transmits the credit card data from the magnetic stripe). So actually it is different -- much more secure -- therefore better, regardless of the sum of money in the transaction.
