First of all why did you have to press "OK" on the terminal? Was it a debit card thing?

Walgreens terminals ask you a series of questions (like do you want to put $x.xx on your card, credit/debit, etc). Using Apple Pay does not remove those questions.

How is that possible? What cards do yo have?

I have one card, a debit card issued by my bank, a smaller regional credit union, which currently doesn't support Apple Pay, though when I contacted them they said they were "evaluating the feature but [has] no ETA if and when [they] implement [it]".

----------

Turns out only "certain cards" are supported. Probably due to fees and associated user agreements etc etc. This was supposed to be a good thing, security and all, but turns out the banks are using it to arm twist their customers. I'm not happy.

Its not like Apple is choosing to not support them. If Apple could, they'd have every card issuer, every retailer, and every bank in the world signed up. Part of it is regulation, part of it is interest.

For now, they're supporting a LARGE amount of their customers by supporting the 3 largest card types (Visa, MasterCard, American Express), and the largest national banks and a giant load of smaller banks, but of course there are still many different card issuers (Discover, Diner's Club, etc.) that haven't signed up yet. It's not that Apple isn't pushing it, and they aren't the ones fully at fault. Part of it relies on the issuer themselves.

Apple Pay

Same here...there is a discussion on the Apple forums regarding the topic. I also sent an email, posted on Amazon's Facebook page, and posted on Amazon's own customer forum my displeasure with their decision. I am going to give them a little time to fix this, but if they don't, I will be utilizing a different card.

I hear you. I also realized though I do 90 percent of my purchasing online and with Amazon where payment is easy with TouchID anyway and I really do benefit from the points I get. I probably won't do anything drastic since my Amex is supported by TouchID and will use that in stores.

I bought chocolate and dental floss at Walgreen's to test Apple Pay. (I figured they'd cancel each other out.) Worked flawlessly and instantaneously. Didn't have to enter a pin... Pressed the TouchID, then pressed an "OK" button on the terminal, and we were done. It took longer for the receipt to print than anything else.

Funny story: this Walgreen's is less than a mile from Georgia Tech. I was the fourth person in line. Three of us were testing Apple Pay. :)

do you have to say credit or debit before holding your phone up to the reader? Because if you say debit (or don't) and debit is your default card, you may have to enter a PIN. If you say credit though, maybe it handles differently. What did you say?

Anybody have an issue with a card that was added to passbook being declined? I have two cards setup, my Chase Southwest Rapid Rewards Visa and my Costco Amex. Tried buying a soda with a Visa, it took and started processing and came back declined, like the card had no available credit or something but that is not the case at all. Tried the Amex then and it went through fine so it was not an issue with the soda machine. On the Visa it even shows the attempted transaction in my history with a red exclamation point by it with declined in the description.

I could see that being an issue if you expect to be able to use your card and it is getting randomly declined. If you are able to set it up and verify it then it should work.

check my bank account. shows two transaction identical name/location and amount. aahhhh f#$@. still processing, so i'm gonna call my bank if they both get posted.

anyone else?

Yes. I got double charged at Walgreens. I'm on hold right now with Bank of America because, both charges posted to my account. Yesterday, when I called, I spoke with 2 different customer service representatives, both of which had no idea what Apple Pay was. They both asked me "how many times did you swipe your card."

The Walgreens pin pad terminal asked me to enter my PIN after I used Touch ID to verify the purchase. I entered it, because it was my first time using Apple Pay and figured, "well, since its a debit....." so I don't know if that was what messed it up or not.

B of A is "disputing the charge" as a "posting error," and the gentleman I spoke with today said I was the second person he's talked to that got a double posting like this using Apple Pay. However, he did ask me how many times I swiped my card.

Exactly what I am doing. If it's not up by end of Nov, I will be using my Citi card as my primary card going forward. I had been debating this move for months now simply due to the Citi Benefits that are far superior to Chase/Amazon.

So, how many times did you swipe you card?

LOL

Companies customer service never cease to amaze with their blatant ignorance and horrific training.

It's coded as a debit, at least in the confirmation email that WF sent this afternoon. It's a debit card, money comes out immediately. But I've used it as a credit (with sig not pin) before, money still comes out immediately of course. I'll have to try it at Walgreens to see if it defaults to 'debit sorry need your pin as well' or if it will be smart enough to run without pin.

Awesome stuff. Please get back to me & lmk if you're PIN was needed for that Walgreens purchase. Thanks !
I set up an account last night. Should have my WF debut by the end of the week. Can't wait

just called this morning. they reverse the charge right away. yeah have no idea if it was one our part or the cashier.

Did you notice if there is an option to pick credit on the screen before you use Apple Pay? Since most bank debit cards are also Visa/MC, I would think you could do it without a pin. It seems excessive to have to use a pin with :apple:Pay

i don't remember seeing the option. hover my phone over it when the screen was asking for phone number (reward card lookup) then my passbook pop up. then proceed for touchID. probably should have waited… they need to do a better prompt screen

Card Recommendations

So anyone have any recommendations on cards to get?

I signed up to get a new Chase Freedom Visa last night since my Amazon Visa doesn't work with Apple pay. I will cancel my Amazon Visa next month after I get it paid off and spend all my rewards at Amazon.

My AT&T Universal MasterCard from Citi also appears not to be supported so now I'm looking for a new MasterCard. Any suggestions? I've had my AT&T Universalcard since 2000, and it usually has some great balance transfer offers I have used in the past, but it's got to go now since it doesn't support Apple Pay. I'm not as worried about cashback etc. from this card since I mostly use my Discover or Chase card for the majority of my purchases, pretty much just have this card as a back up in case I'm somewhere that doesn't take the others (I've ran into a few), and for the balance transfer offers (usually able to get 0% for at least a year anytime I want, and an lot of the time I can get 0% until paid off).

Also thinking about picking up an American Express card, preferably one without an annual fee.

out of curiosity.. in your passbook, does your card shows the store info and the total for the transaction? for the double charge transaction.

mine only shows san francisco, CA and the amount shows "--"

If you pay in full every month and don't travel the Double Cash from Citi is a good contender. It has a 3% foreign transaction fee so I wouldn't use it while abroad though.

My Citi AA Exec MC works, but unfortunately costs $450/year.

I suggest the Amex EveryDay since it had no AF and Amex have shown competence with Apple Pay (easily th best integration with full transaction history, etc).

Edit: Someone mentioned the Double Cash. That'll work too.

But I LOVE my Citi AA Exec card. It is pricey but worth it if you travel, much like AMEX Plat. Access to the lounge and no foreign transaction fees. If you don't travel, it's not really worth it.

If you're looking for a general every day card that you will pay off monthly but option to carry a balance occasionally, the Chase Slate is a good option. No annual fee. I am a fan of AMEX and the benefits of their cards (the most flexible points system!!). They have many cards to suit various needs so I'm sure you'll find one that's good for you. I will say that there are many places that don't accept AMEX so you should always have a backup card just in case.

I normally use my Chase Visa and Discover card for my regular purchases and usually pay them off every month. If I run into a situation where those cards aren't taken I use my AT&T card and pay it off that month too, but that doesn't happen that often.

Usually my AT&T card gets used for balance transfers, which I pretty much use as a low interest loan. For example my AT&T card offered me 0% interest until paid in full so I deposited a check for $4000 into my checking account and used that money to buy a new master bedroom set from a local furniture store that didn't offer 0% interest on their own. I then paid that $4000 off over the next couple years. I did have to pay a 3% fee up front for the balance transfer, but that isn't that bad of a deal on a 0% loan over a few years.

The Citi Double Cash card was one I was looking at online, but it didn't really say if it was a VISA or MasterCard. Also wasn't sure if the balance transfer offer they were showing was something you could get most of the time, or just as an intro offer.

According to my Discover Card statement my FICO is 800+, so I have pretty good credit.

And, the ridiculous thing is, Bank of America is listed as a participating bank on Apple's website. You'd think they'd at least make sure their representatives know what Apple Pay is!

Hope you not planning getting a mortgage soon. Getting new cards and cancelling old ones will reduce your credit score.

It's a World MasterCard and also has a EMV chip.

At this time, I wouldn't choose my credit cards solely based on whether or not they support Apple Pay. Nor would I cancel any cards that don't, unless you don't mind a hit on your FICO score.

Apple Pay has a long way to go. Getting an Apple Pay-supported card today so that you can use it at Panera Bread is a little silly. That's not to say that Apple Pay isn't the wave of the future.
