At less than a penny for each stream you might as well just not pay them for the three months. I feel bad for those artist who aren't well known. Maybe they'll make $15.00 for the whole three months.
I think the biggest boon to the lesser known artists is that this service will help them get discovered. I've found a lot of music on Pandora that I wouldn't have found on my own. Also, artists who aren't well known aren't getting rich off of downloads, either.

The amounts paid, the Taylor swift jokes, could not care less. From next week, going to give the service a go and compare it to google music and spotify. If it's very good, I'll consider a subscription, if it worse than the others, I'm not interested . Given the WWDC presentation, I'm really not sure what to expect other than iTunes with ping again...

When I first read this I thought in my head, how nice the artist will get $0.20 cents a stream.

Maybe that song or artist just isn't very good.

The artist can supplement his or her income by performing on street corners or playing bat mitzvah and birthday parties. If the music is good, those kids at the parties will start streaming the songs, and they'll tell their friends about them, and the song will go viral, kind of like Flappy Bird.

Interesting reading from this thread is how hard done the Americans are with the data plans. 2GB a month.... Damn! Just of of curiosity, how much is a plan that comes with 2GB of data, unlimited texts, and say 600 minutes each month of talk time?

My wife and I are on a plan with AT&T for unlimited texts, unlimited talk (I think), and only 3GB of shared data between the 2 of us. My bill is $160 a month. $15 for every GB over 3GB.

Edit to add: last month was the first month we ever went over our data. Coincidentally, it was also the month I signed up for Spotify.

How many people really do have 2GB data caps? Maybe it's a US only thing?
In Japan, my carrier's basic plan is "capped" at 8GB/month and throttled beyond that. I would need to stream music for about 5 hours a day everyday exclusively over the 4G network (without using Wi-Fi hotspots) to hit that cap.

Very true! Here in the UK a few networks have All You Can Eat Data, (not to mention t-Mobile in the US already doing so). 2GB really isn't a lot. So people need to spend a little more, surely they're cheap cheap contracts?

But yeah, I'm in the UK with 5GB a month.

That's 500 plays to get to 99 cents! I can't honestly say I've played any song 500 times in my life. Maybe if I'm still rocking Pretty Hate Machine when I'm 90.

Unfortunately, I have. I've just gone in to my Top 25 most played on my old MacBook. God dammit I used to REALLY Third Eye Blind!

Does Apple understand yet that we have data caps of 2GB for most people and that streaming isn't really an option?
It's still possible to sync music files from iTunes to iOS. Use that if you don't have the bandwidth or data to stream... On top of that Apple Music allows you to make files available offline. Do you understand those things? And just because you have an issue doesn't mean those with 10 GB of data each month like myself have to be limited to storing music locally.

Wifi exists in your work place for your personal use? probably not.
Actually it does. I can connect to my work's Wi-Fi for any personal use. And in stations, on trains, metros, trams, buses, bars, coffee shops, etc.

Apple's been accused of not paying ARTISTS during the trial period, but they're still not?
The LABELS will be getting 0.2 cents per play now, and who knows how much of that they're going to give to artists?

As always with labels (who pretend to stand up for artists), they will pay peanuts. Look at the Spotify case with Big Machine and you'll see

Apple could success more if they make a deal with carriers that using Apple music won't count plan internet data. For example I'm using Teliasonera carrier and it gives free bandwidth for Spotify.

Assuming this is like every other streaming service, you understand that you can download tracks to the device while you are on wifi right?

Damn, this just shows how behind the times the US actually is in telecoms.

Here in the UK, I pay £15 per month (~$23) for unlimited texts, unlimited data and 2000 minutes. Here I'm seeing $160 for 2GB? - you guys need to start a revolt or something.

So do I fail math or is 0.2 cents mean 5 streams per penny? Seems about right at that rate. You have to think about that 1 stream is one person listening to the song (we'll assume that for this). If the same song was played on a popular radio station 1 time, it could have an audience of 10's of thousands on the one play.
