I'm not anti apple. I've owned iPhone 3g, 4, 4s and the 5 before I switched. My daughter still has a iPad. Im just simply acknowledging that there is something just a little bit superior. As I have stated before apple is still good But since the great Steve jobs passed they are not on top anymore.
Top in terms of what? Having the largest screen smartphones?
Apple improves their products every year which is what they are concerned about. DO they always have the best "spec"? Well, specs can be VERY misleading. They processor speed might not be the fastest, but that doesn't mean it's not as good. The thing that a lot of Android mfg do with the processors is over clocking and this is misleading and not as reliable. Also, Apple is in the last stages of transferring to 64 Bit ARM processors, the Android world they are WAY behind in this area. They can push 32 Bit processors faster to get better performance, but they are still only 32 Bit. What's more important is the type of cores they are using, in this area Apple is pushing 64 Bit vs 32 Bit, so Apple is in front of the Android platform. In terms of ease of use, Apple is still ahead of the others. In terms of integrating devices to work together, Apple is still ahead of Android. In terms of overall market share, Apple will never be the Number 1 in market share for the simple fact that they don't sell the ultra cheap products to go after the larger number of low end users, that's not of interest to Apple. In terms of the premium priced market, Apple is Number 1. That's the market they go after. Now, Apple has a very planned consistent method of releasing new products and OS's.
In terms of larger screen smartphones? Apple purposely decided not to release larger screen models sooner, the reasoning is that the available technology wasn't there to do a good job and instead of releasing a POS, they decided to wait and do it now. The other flip side is they simply couldn't build enough units so their production capacity limits what they can produce. It takes years to increase production capacities and they still have the number 1 selling single model smartphone. They are in the process of implementing robots that Foxconn is developing and they just implemented 10,000 robots, but they are working their second generation robots and going to implement 30,000 robots to increase production capacity.
But Apple still continues to build better Apple products each year and they do what they do. The problem people are complaining about with not having a large screen model hurt Apple sales, but they still sold plenty of iPhones despite not having large screen models.
Now, if you see these other large screen models with higher PPI, the problem is that you aren't going to tell the difference in a smartphone with higher PPI once you get to 326 PPI, plus no one is going to watch beyond 1080p on a freaking smartphone. People are not going to watch 4K video on a smartphone, so some of these companies that have higher res screens is kind of BS because it takes a LOT of GPU power to do it and there are really no apps that take advantage of the higher PPI and it's just a marketing ploy to act like it's better when it's kind of silly to have ultra high PPI on such a small screen. Your eyes can't tell the difference.
In certain areas that are important, Apple is still ahead of Android. They are ahead in security, ease of use, 64 Bit and usability between devices.
So, when you say they aren't Number 1, please clarify.

Not every one of those 400M iTunes has the iPhone required to access Apple Pay. I do not.
Next point, will the new iPad be able to access Apple Pay? I hope so, then more people can access it.
ApplePay is new and people that buy the new Apple products with ApplePay capabilities will take advantage of it, and moving forward more and more users of Apple products will have ApplePay capabilities. It takes time to get the install base of users to update whatever they are using to take advantage of something like ApplePay, but this is just the beginning. They are planning on selling about 190 iPhone 6/6+s within the next 12 months, so that's almost 200 Million new users that will be able to use ApplePay. Within 3 years, they'll have probably 500+ Million users with ApplePay capabilities once people upgrade their smartphones. I don't know why one would need ApplePay on a tablet, that's not that convenient to break out a tablet when you are grocery shopping, it more convenient to break out an iPhone or the new AppleWatch.
