Might not want to exclude Paypal and Samsung devices altogether, otherwise Apple Pay will wilt and die eventually. Paypal is the king of payment processing, whether you like them or not.

Paypal is far from being the king of payment processing. They are the king of eBay's payments, because it's the only payment you can use. People actively dislike paypal, more than any other method of payment known. I've set up websites with Paypal, only to have the owner request an additional payment solution because Paypal is objectionable to a large percentage of their user base.

If it wasn't the only way of paying on eBay PayPal would die. Good riddance to them.

I don't particularly like PayPal but have no especial animosity (unlike eBay, where I've been forked over more than once).

But doing such a deal with Samsung while discussions were under way with Apple is just stupid. Sure - PayPal on ApplePay would have been one-of-several but it's a lot better than a deal with a fingerprint reader than has a very poor reputation for usability.

I wonder who holds the bag for fraud liability ??

As long as they offer some form of payment that I actually use (such as my CCs from Citi or Capital One) I'm not going to miss PayPal on :apple: Pay. I'll just transfer from my PP account to my bank.

The fees are stupid and their protection system is terrible. So many horror stories about PayPal I can't even count.

They've really exploited their position and personally don't think they deserve top spot, hopefully this and the split with eBay will put them in their place.

I don't particularly like ebay / paypal but eBay remains extremely popular.

Well played Samsung.

Apple - some times you win some, and sometimes you lose.

If Apple had got the deal Samsung has, the posts for this topic would be very different.

I know several people who shop online and never use PayPal.

The last time I used PayPal was when the first Xbox came out and I got paid with a stolen CC that PayPal accepted and lost $400. Never used them again and never needed to.

I LOATH paypal and their stupid fees...someone wants to send me $500...and there is a $15 fee...who should pay that fee? The sender or the recipient?

Guess again...I only got $485...thanks payapal.

friggin idiots

I will go to any lengths to not use paypal.

apple pay will be just right for me

No need to include paypal. They are not a creditor or a bank. They are just another middle man.

True, but sometimes middle men serve a valid purpose. What would have been nice to get PayPal on board was for those smaller banks and credit unions to be able to be Apple Pay compatible through customers already being linked with PayPal.

This is exactly why NFC payments will never hit the ground in the US. I hate to say this but not everyone buys an iPhone so for Apple to attempt to "lock up" a technology, will kill it for everyone, including Apple. Come one google, work your magic and show em how it's done.

Apple acting like a jilted three year old again, get over yourself Apple and play nice! Consumer first, not Apple first!

I usually use Paypal when it's available to me online, I get some sort of sense of security out of it. If Apple could replace Paypal and have it as an option on lots of major websites, I'd be right up for ditching Paypal.

This is a win for everyone.

I really think Samsung and PayPal are a terrific fit for each other.

(P.S. While PayPal mocks an alleged iCloud security breach that never happened--the pictures came from multiple companies' systems over many years, and by far more boring methods--are people not aware of PayPal parent eBay's ongoing storm of malware injected into Ebay.com pages? Maybe it's not the time for eBay companies to bring up security....)

sounds like Apple is the douche in this case.

Really. When rumors of Apple working with PayPal leaks then a few weeks later they sign a deal with their biggest competitor who is searching for anyway they can to upstage Apple. Any deal Apple was working on was likely exclusive for a period, so they basically asked to be excluded.

I can't stand PayPal and the whole deal with ebay and I'm even happier Apple didn't team with them. Hopefully we get some lower fees now!

I'm looking forward Apple Pay and to some competition, hopefully we get some lower fees now! Bring on Apple pay!:apple::cool:

I don't see them as competitors, but rather complementary. Can I open a web shop and accept worldwide payments with apple pay? Nope.

I'm absolutely not convinced apple pay will be a success. Especially in europe, it doesn't make a chance.

What would define Apple Pay's success? For Apple it is a service through which its customers can successfully compete both E and physical transactions without having to provide specific credit card information. I don't expect people in Europe to start lining up at apple stores and switch over to Apple or start buying 800$ phones (instead of much cheaper phones) just because Apple Pay exists. What it allows apple to do is provide a safe and secure way to execute transactions - to its customers while adding value to its eco-system. It will also open up a new revenue stream for the company especially in the E-commerce side of things with the sort of success the iPad enjoys with online shopping. Other than that its just another form of NFC payment and it wouldn't cost the vendors a whole lot of money to be apple pay compatible if they already have existing NFC payment systems in place. Both Apple Pay and iBeacons will take time to catch on but even if a fourth of Apple's future customers embrace it, then I feel it will be a huge success. Currently Apple has the 6 and 6+, the Apple watch and the rumored iPad Air2. The customer base is substantial (especially if the Apple watch sells in numbers) for them to start generating business through apple pay.

Paypal is fundamentally different imho, with it one has to have a credit card or a bank account linked up to the paypal account. With Apple pay (from what I read) one just needs to snap a picture of the credit card and the information is stored on the device and not on some company's cloud where one needs to maintain an account. With apple pay i deal with my vendor and my credit card company or bank. With Paypal I am dealing with them, the vendor, the credit/debit card company for essentially the same service. Plus there is security in that my credit card information is secured through touch ID, encryption and not shared on some company's systems that can be hacked.
