People who ask for vertical integration deserve vertical integration. I prefer having options.

You wouldn't have anymore options if they only went with PayPal, you would only have another company handling your data, non one use cards and more. So no this is better.

Yeah, ebay fees are rapacious at this point. I used to sell high volume on ebay, but the fees forced me out. They would have made more off me if they had kept the same sliding fee schedule in which fees were far lower on high priced items.

10% on $4000 Mac Pro sale. That was the last time I gave ebay any money. Greedy SOBs is what they are.

You are so right!

this is the kind of crap that makes me want to ditch apple, all together.

thanks for keeping us in the loop, macrumors

Do it and put your money where your mouth is. ;) Don't tell us. Show us.

I prefer Apple had handled payments on their own anyway. I've had bad luck with PayPal and their fees are high.

I don't think people realize how big Apple really is or how big of a deal Apple Pay will be.

Let that sink in for a bit.

Are you thinking that Apple will somehow have the "cheaper" fees? Apple WILL charge just like any other payment system. If you run a retail location and decide to take Apple Pay, you will pay a hefty premium.

Have you been in an Apple Store? Have you compared prices with Apple products and similar category products? Apple is very expensive. For the record, IMO their products are worth it.

Apple is taking a 0.15% cut.

Case closed...

I don't see similarities here. Apple Pay is for a closed eco-system while Paypal is a payments service that is available to all. Its a different market that they find themselves in. Paypal wants customers to sign up, increase its base and have plenty of credit cards on record so that customers can login to paypal and complete transactions. Apple pay is something that exists in your Apple device (iphone6, 6+, Apple watch and possibly the next iPad) and the purpose is to simplify credit card transactions without having to go through a middleman. Apple does not have your CC info (other then the credit card it has on file for your apple id) and doesn't want it. To complete an Apple pay transaction you have to simply use NFC and the apple pay info on your phone. You do not have to maintain a separate account with a middleman. I see some advantage in that. Apple pay does not require a separate account or registration and giving out your bank details or credit card numbers to a third party (over and above your 1 cc that you have on file for your apple id). It simplifies the entire process of making e-payments and especially of NFC payments at brick and mortar stores (which google wallet does as well - albeit one has to give google the cc information).

I think apple is bipolar. If they hate Samsung so much why do they still get parts from them. This is pretty childish.

They've said numerous times their mobile and software war is outside of their partnership in manufacturing. Two separate areas. They stated this clearly during the multiple lawsuits.

Sold a product as 'as-is' on eBay/PayPal and the buyer didn't know how to use it.
Buyer claimed it was defective and eBay had them ship it back to me without contacting me. They then went into my account and stole money to refund to the buyer. After posting documentation and video of the product working eBay said 'sorry' but there was nothing they could do other than refund the seller fees.

Never again.

I don't like your new friend so now I'm not gonna play with you anymore... grow up Apple.

My guess is that Apple wanted exclusivity to differentiate itself from Samsung. Once that was no longer possible, Apple had no interest in partnering with PayPal.

"Paypal, you picked the wrong Pal; so now you're gonna Pay."
---:apple::p

I wouldn't be surprised if Samsung decides to make a bid for Paypal and enter the world of online payments ;) A way for them to distinguish there products from the dozens of other android phones with NFC and google wallet.

I don't see them as competitors, but rather complementary. Can I open a web shop and accept worldwide payments with apple pay? Nope.

Correction: The answer to that question is "Not yet, but obviously that's where this is going."

Just like every single product Apple has launched in the post-jobs-return era, the first iteration focuses on doing a small number of things very well, and then once it's well established they then broaden the scope and open up the technology to all applicable fronts.

As I stated, I'm hoping that the competition forces those fees down!

Apple products are worth it for me as well!

If you've ever sold anything through eBay, you know that both eBay and PayPal are absolute pirates in terms of fees.

They have a lock on customers using the platform and take full advantage of that fact.

Inking a deal with Samsung while in negotiations with Apple is not a smart way to do business, which is hardly surprising for them.

Ever buy something with a smart device using the internet? It's an absolute chore - shipping addresses and credit cards, or email addresses and the rest with Paypal.

We need a better system and Apple is about to provide it.
EU probably has rules and regulations they have to follow which allow for lower fees. I was hoping to get away from using paypal anyway. So... no big loss to me if Apple Pay doesn't support it.

Precisely. Every JV has a benefit that justifies the cost. Come to think of it, apple would not have gained much for a paypal collaboration especially when its ecosystem does very well in incorporating new stuff. I wouldn't be surprised if the adoption of apple pay within the apple eco system is many times that of google wallet in android.

Because they have no reasonable alternative? Other manufacturers alone are not able to satisfy Apple's components demands from the quality and/or quantity point of view.

That will pretty much be the death of ApplePay even before it hits mainstream consumers... I will NEVER use a PayPal service again, EVER... Apple, head your customers warnings, PayPal is bad for business, PERIOD...

With PayPal for me the advantages were so I didn't need to enter my bank account details again, and I wasn't handing over my bank account details to another site.

I've now thought I can just use a password manager to make the form filling process quicker, plus I only buy from a few reputable websites, which I trust anyway. Those websites have also improved their security over the years.

So now after 10 years I've closed my PayPal account.

Kill them off, Apple. They should buy Square to end PayPal once and for all. Or make their own Square-like system. Then both sides are covered.

The problem is that Apple has not shown any intention to offer apple pay for non-apple devices - a basic fact that it would need to consider if it has ambitions of becoming the worldwide leader in online and in-store payments. I don't see apple having such ambitions so for them they will most likely target a high utilization rate for apple pay from their millions of iPhone customers going forward and if that is achieved they'd be happy.
