Going to try this trick and see if it charges the Apple Pencil. Thoughts?

Good thing I don't need an Apple Pencil. But as an Apple guy for 25 years, two things occur to me:

1) A kluge like this never would have never made it past Jobs. This company lost its way once before and appears to be doing so again.

2) The very fact that this adaptor is sold out tells us all we need to know - that people are lining up and obediently doing exactly what Apple tells them to do.

Apple must be pissed cause people fell for the iPad 10th gen and didn’t choose the Air or Pro line. Now they got to make more adapters🤣

Took me too long to realise that "Apple is not in the gadget business, its in the accessory business."

Jokes apart its actually the world's biggest accessory maker by both volume and revenue.

Seems like they got the same person who handled the stock of Google Pixel Watch bands to take care of this.

Could be supply chain issues still getting worked out (China has been having lockins throughout the summer still), but it looks bad - they probably should have delayed the release of the iPad.

Their whole iPad strategy is a mess. It's hard to even know what iPad, if any, to recommend to friends and family who ask anymore. The iPad Air is only a bit more expensive than the standard iPad and is far superior in most ways. I was in the market for a new iPad Pro, but the updates were so lackluster that I'm just going to hang onto my first gen iPad Pro until they actually add some of the better features of the Air and standard iPad.

I'm not trying to defend Apple for not going with the gen 2 pencil on this one. HOWEVER: it is funny that when the original pencil was first released, people complained about having to stick it in the iPad directly, because it looked silly, was awkward to handle, and would be prone to breakage. Almost everyone suggested that using a cable instead would have been a better move. Now that a cable is involved (adapter notwithstanding), everyone still complains about it looking silly 😆. In short, I think the silliness is not the adapter (since it gets included with new pencils and is tiny) or the cable, but the fact that they're still using the original pencil at all.
As you say its in selling it at all. When the first pen got out there was no second one so that's the thing. Apple could just make the Pen 2 standard to every new iPad, problem solved. They would even sell more of these damn plastic sticks. So the person who decided this seems to be a Microsoft Double Agent otherwise it just makes no sense at all.

Good point, tbh.

I think i would prefer the cable instead of having it stick out. Especially while using the device.

this is ridiculous - they should have add pencil 2 support and call it a day. Why do they keep pencil 1 + this nonsense is beyond me

Would be interesting to know, if the adapter allows you to pair a 1st gen Pencil with any USB-C iPad not just the 10th gen. Any info on that topic?

If I had to guess the cost of adding the magnets for Gen 2 Pencil would made the vanilla iPad redundant and cost almost as much as the iPad Air (which if that doesn't show how redundant the iPad Air is I don't know what does.)

The entire iPad lineup is a mess and iPadOS makes it even worse. Honestly just stick with the 9th Gen. There's no reason to buy new iPads anymore.

Its easy.

Want a small iPad, get the Mini.

Want a larger screen than the 9 and seldom use a pencil, get the 10.

Want a better screen and better pencil, get the Air.

Want the nicest screen and speakers, get the Pro.

Really want a specific Apple keyboard case, get the iPad that has that keyboard case.

Or ask which features are most important and recommend based on that.

I'm more upset at the awful user experience this creates. Hey, want to charge a pencil? You used to be able to just plug the pencil in, but because of some idiotic reason we dont care to tell you we didn't go with the inductive charging stuff but came up with this abortion!

Great job Apple, this is the apple mouse 2.0, at least users dont have to flip it over.
Abomination?

You could buy something like this:
3 pack for less than $7.
Yep. I bet it isn't long before someone makes one that blends perfectly with the Pencil 1 so you can just leave it attached.

I don't need them to tell me to know that there isn't enough space above the camera and sensor bracket for the charger.

Oddly there is another longer side available with no camera. They moved camera to landscape side. OK, so move buttons on other landscape side to portrait side (former side for camera) and the other landscape side could hold the pencil hardware. Might even be spun as throwing the lefties a bone for a change.

But what do I know? Somebody at HQ is probably getting paid 6-7 figures to make such decisions and we're offering defense, offense, excuses or alternatives for free on a fan forum website.
