Sure, but there is no male-lightning to female-lighting cable so users would NEED to bring a cable and brick with them everywhere. The Pencil1 was designed long before compatibility with a USB-C iPad was a consideration. Their solution allowed people to just bring the iPad and Pencil.

I don’t know what you’re saying. The pencil
is a pointing device just like the mouse. Both should have female ports to accommodate existing cables, not matter what they connect to on the other end. Just like the Apple TV remote, keyboards, trackpads, iPods, iPhones, iPads, AirPods, etc.

I'm not trying to defend Apple for not going with the gen 2 pencil on this one. HOWEVER: it is funny that when the original pencil was first released, people complained about having to stick it in the iPad directly, because it looked silly, was awkward to handle, and would be prone to breakage. Almost everyone suggested that using a cable instead would have been a better move. Now that a cable is involved (adapter notwithstanding), everyone still complains about it looking silly 😆. In short, I think the silliness is not the adapter (since it gets included with new pencils and is tiny) or the cable, but the fact that they're still using the original pencil at all.
I think the point that the Apple Pencil enthusiasts make is why Apple would double down with the older design when they have already a better version that has already been out for several years.

Since none of those things can be charged directly from the iPad you have to bring a cable and block with you. Apple didn't want that requirement for the Pencil-1.

Good thing I don't need an Apple Pencil. But as an Apple guy for 25 years, two things occur to me:

1) A kluge like this never would have never made it past Jobs. This company lost its way once before and appears to be doing so again.

2) The very fact that this adaptor is sold out tells us all we need to know - that people are lining up and obediently doing exactly what Apple tells them to do.
Or that apple was trolling so they only made 10 adapters and didn’t anticipate people actually doing this.

Can't use the production-slots of the iPhone 14 Plus? 😬

You could buy something like this:
3 pack for less than $7.
Does that also work with data-connections for pairing?

This exactly, they save money by not adding the hardware into the iPad. But it gets better, they get another $99 out of you for the pencil and if you already have a pencil from your previous iPad, you have to buy a $9.99 adapter to get it to work. It really is a smart move. The 11th generation iPad will have Pencil 2 support so you'll have to buy a new pencil again.
They probably make a much better profit margin, percentage wise, on the adapter than the pencil itself.

Remove pencil to use keyboard? Remove keyboard to attach pencil?
Put pass-through Smart Connector on keyboard - connect keyboard to iPad, connect Pencil to keyboard.

This is the silly thing that dates back to the introduction of the original iPad Pro and pencil - the Pencil was introduced alongside the new Smart Connector and keyboard system, wasn’t compatible with previous models, so why wasn’t the whole ensemble designed to work together?

Seriously, that cable takes more space than the actual Pencil. Who's going to put that in his/her pocket?
Just wait a little, something more useful will appear in Amazon or eBay, and for less than a cup of coffee.

EDIT:
Found some!

its hard to make the pencil 2 support on that ipad
They couldnt place the magnetic charging + facetime camera at the same internal place/space

The problem is the original dumb decision to make Apple Pencil 1 with a MALE lightning connector. All other lightning devices use a FEMALE connector. Had they not done this, any lightning cable a customer already has would work to charge it.
Then you'd have had to bring the Lightning m-m cable with you for pairing.

Will this adapter also work with other USB-C iPads or only with the iPad 10?
For charging maybe, but do they even support Pencil 1?

Steve Jobs would not have released this design. Maybe make it compatible with the Apple iPencil Pro?
Steve Jobs would never...

And since he was likely involved in the planning stages of Lighting.

I’m glad that I bought an iPad Air last month (the cheapest version with minimum storage and back-to-school discount). I think that for anyone whose main use is note taking and drawing diagrams with the pencil, the Air is the best value.

This is too much consumism.
iPhones every year with basically the same features as last year?, etc.
Is it really necessary?. Can Apple owners share a lot with the staff and other workers and with the workd?. A trillion dollars would help a lot out there. There are not enough raw materials, lots of logistic issues, etc. is enough no Apple?.
