Maybe the updated part number has something to do with this story: http://www.cultofmac.com/magic-mous...ts-batteries-dead-at-nearly-half-charge/26075

I haven't had any issues so far with battery usage. I was actually amazed that the batteries that came with it lasted as long as they did and then I switched to the Apple rechargables and am having great luck with them. Oh, but seeing that this article from COM is from January, I'd hope that Apple has/had already addressed the issue.

Just a quick question, why on earth does Apple still sell the Mighty Mouse? It is the worst input device ever constructed! I'd much rather use a $2 2-button PS/2 ball mouse from 1997, as it's much more ergonomic. This feels quite strange as their laptop trackpads are the most comfortable one you can get.

I have to say the Magic Mouse is the second worse mouse ever, first being the hockey puck mouse. It's the total opposite of ergonomic. The mighty mouse is not the best, but it's way better. There's a reason for the design of other mice from Logitech/Microsoft.

I have to agree I was never fond of the mighty mouse the one with my current mac has never been opened. I bought the Magic Mouse when it came out hoping It would be better granted the swipe gestures were great but the shape and ergonomics make for a very unfomfortable experience it was just too small, until apple bring out something better I'll stick with my Razer Mamba

I haven't used an Apple mouse since the last ADB one,

apple%20adb%20teardrop%20mouse.gif

Since then I've just gone and bought the best Logitech mouse available. Never liked the puck and never a fan of any of the laser based Apple mice.

Trackpads are inconvenient, and a compromise device for those who *have* to be on the road, since the trackpad is easy to build into a laptop.

But to use as the primary device? Really. "But a lot of people have never used a mouse!" I hear someone whine. Or some variation of that, perhaps even going into full disingenuous Apple-fan mode and claiming a trackpad is better than a mouse because it is more intuative.

Right, well - anything that can be done on a trackpad, can be done with a mouse, faster, more reliably and with more precision. The trackpad Apple is selling with their legacy products (i.e. Macs) is just there to prepare the crowd for the touch-Mac.

Though be sure that Apple views the mouse the same way as the optical drive. It doesn't matter whether it is good, reliable, convenient or even needed for many many people.

Apple hates these things and. they. will. die.

(at least in the mind of Apple, like Blu-ray is growing leaps and bounds every month and Apple pretends like it doesn't even exist - because according to their own sales pitch, people don't need optical drives)

It's been obvious for more than a year; Apple is phasing out the Mac as we know it and will replace it with a "high end" iOS device.

The desktop Mac is over - because it is Apple policy.

False, false, false

And false.

I think you forgot to mention that the sky's falling in, the Rapture is coming, and the dead are about to walk the Earth.

I was a bit more diplomatic in my last post, but since people still keep saying that "the trackpad can't be used for precision work", I'll be a bit more blunt.

I don't even have to be diplomatic: you are so wrong, you make wrong look wrong.

While people can become really advanced at something really stupid, like say; making fast and precise movements with a trackpad or painting with one's toes, it it still is amazingly stupid considering that the more conventional tools - in this case a mouse and the hand, respectively - are so much better.

I'm so sick of people who have become so enamored with their own fringe interest (such as working a lot with a trackpad) that they think they've found the next big thing.

Do illustration with a trackpad, do CAD, do gaming, do whatever - it's *always* slower, more IMPRECISE (oh yeah buddy, you read it right) and more inconvenient ergonomically.

The trackpad is nothing but a compromise for the mobile devices. One would have to be seriously damaged in the head to think it is actually a replacement for a mouse!

(unless of course it is the Magic Mouse, which is so bad a trackpad sort of looks competitive to it - and yet isn't)

Convincing argument.

Screw that, I don't see any of the above as a bad thing - it's just development of Apple's current situation.

Nothing wrong with that, now is there? Any reason to go all douchbag and claim that it's "anti-apple" or even doomsaying??

Apple wants to replace the Mac with the touch based Mac. It will be called a Mac. It will just run iOS, that's all. Give it 5 years, the process has already started.

So take your nerd-casm and shove it pal. :p

Convincing argument.

Yeah just about as convincing as your "nuh uh the trackpad SURE is better"

It must be a different design concept for them to phase out one part and assign the new magic mouse a new part #.

Perhaps it's a little wider?

For those that speculate it's to accommodate new gestures in Lion - the current magic mouse would only need a software update, no? So this does seem to point to "some" design element.

Idd. I have tried a trackpad a few times and it really is hard to navigate fast and click accurately. The mouse gives you some stability in your hand which is needed. I have had my parents test it and there it immediately becomes obvious that a trackpad is a nightmare ...

The only place where using fingers directly for coordination seems natural is on touch screen devices ...

I predict a run on mouses. Try working in Photoshop or Illustrator with a trackpad. Ouf. Horrible.

Or working in those apps with a mouse? What graphics professional doesn't use a graphics tablet - how on earth can you draw and edit images using a mouse?!

worst article ever. look at the image on the first page;

Worlds FIRST multi touch mouse

this type of mouse is new, why would they scrap it? if they do discontinue it, it's because a better mouse will be coming out.

there is just no way they will try to eliminate the mouse, it will always be needed for precision tasks such as designing.. the track pad will never come close

The Magic Trackpad sucks. Apple's laptops have the best trackpads of any, but I still prefer a conventional mouse or Magic Mouse to using a trackpad. IMO this is a really bad decision, and I hope my Magic Mouse never breaks since you'll have to pay more than retail to get one off eBay or what not.

I switched to the MagicTrackpad a month ago and haven't used a mouse since. Plus with Lion, it's phenomenal with the gestures.

They should just dump the mouse altogether, anyone that's a serious gamer wouldn't use that anyway and get a real mouse like a Logitec MX-518 or something like that. I've always gotten rid of my Mac mice and gone with a 3rd party.

I just bought a Trackpad for my New Imac and it does make using the Imac easier if you learn the gestures

The downside or disadvantage to Magic Mouse (and Magic Trackpad) is the darn batteries only last about a month, and if the device goes off, you have to re-pair it, this is a pain.

This is why I ONLY use wired peripherals on all my Macs. I use Logitech Laser Mice (wired) and the Apple extended keyboard w/num pad (wired). Best setup ever. Batteries for mice and keyboards is a bad idea. They are better for TV controllers.

My batteries last six to eight weeks and I use 8 - 10 hours a day every day. I do not need to re-pair anything when changing batteries - and the joy of the apple devices (keybaard, mouse and trackpad) is that they power off and on as required and the machine simply picks them up again. Absolutely no idea what you're doing wrong there...

Really? I don't know any bonafide professional graphic artist that prefer the Magic Mouse. And, in any case, if Apple stopped making mice today there are loads of 3rd party mouses 10x better. I'll file your comment under "Overreaction."

I love the magic mouse too much for it to be gone. If I want a trackpad I'll get a MBP....simple.

Really not necessary to buy an entire MBP just to get a trackpad. You can buy trackpads for $69. </sarc>

It's not that. If I wanted a system with a trackpad I would go out and buy a Book( Any Kind ) and if I wanted a mouse I'd buy a desktop( Any Kind ) to me trackpad means portability and mouse means stationary. The twi don't mix, that's why i'd never buy a extra mouse for a laptop.

I am happier with my Logitech mouse anyway, the Magic Mouse is way to unpractical when it comes to gaming or I dislike editing in aperture with it as well
