Really? I don't know any bonafide professional graphic artist that prefer the Magic Mouse.

I am...and I do. I loved my Mighty Mouse and love the Magic Mouse even more.
I've used a wacom tablet and though nice I really like Apple's mice.
I don't find them to be "ergonomic" but also feel those ergonomic mice are actually worse to hold. I like that my hand does not sit on the mouse rather lightly touches it to move. If the Magic Mouse wasn't so expensive I'd switch to that for home use.

I know it's a matter of personal preference, but the Magic Mouse is the best mouse I have ever used. I love the ergonomics of it, to me it feels like i'm not even holding a mouse at all... like I'm just resting my hand on the desk. I just lightly push the sides of it with my thumb and little finger and it glides around. I also love being able to scroll around my artwork with the slightest movement of my finger in any direction.

I'm glad that this rumor turned out not to be true. I have a MBP and while I use the trackpad a lot, I also use my magic mouse a lot. I'd miss it if it wasn't there.

I just wish they would have made a USB Magic Mouse, sick of replacing batteries.

There must be an inductive charging mouse pad by now, right? what is the hold up if there is not?

They do have one:

If the screen can 'see' your hands, it would know if you were just using one hand and switch key layouts to something appropriate.

You can't touch-type with 'the back of a pen'?, so you would just use the onscreen keyboard as normal.

Gloves wouldn't make any difference to a camera system... you still have all your fingers.

My point is, if the right keys are always under your fingers, regardless of where you put them... you wouldn't need to feel.

ummmm...why not just have the computer read your mind?

Let's face it, Apple haven't made a decent mouse for about 20 years. Fact.

Now THIS on the other hand should be great!

;)

This makes no sense for the design community. If apple expects us designers to start designing using the crappy trackpad, they are in for a huge loss. In any case, so long as other manufacturers keep making reliable mouse devices we can always use their offerings. I hope they do not drop support for mice in general. They are cocky but I am sure they are not that stupid.

I've been waiting for a magic mouse refresh for ages now! And because of all the gestures that it can't do!

I love the magic trackpad, but I really don't see them getting rid of the mouse altogether. Way too many people use it! And many things just don't work as well with the trackpad alone... from gaming to music editing to photoshop... the mouse is usually much better for this.

But a magic mouse with a better touch surface that works with new gestures... that's a no-brainer for apple! Or at least it should be...

Magic mouse unreliable

We have various Apple Mice on our Macs, wired and wireless. They are not reliable with the mini-track balls on the top always giving trouble. It is close to impossible to disassemble them to clean out the roller transducers and they get clogged with finger grease and fluff. I find I have to squirt in switch cleaner fluid and then roll them up and down on absorbent paper, then blow out with low pressure compressed air and finally repeat the switch cleaner stage. Eventually you just have to replace them.

The track pad also has its problems. It does not really like rechargeable batteries, only showing about 50-60% battery capacity with a new fully charged pair. I now normally use non-rechargeable lithium AA cells with it. The reaction to multi-finger gestures is nothing like as reliable as my MacBook Pro's track pad is. Unlike the Magic Mouse, my iMac loses communications with the Trackpad every time it goes to sleep and you have to wait some time for it to reconnect.

I am never convinced that Apple pays enough attention to little but significant irritations, being too involved in the next new "big thing". With PC's, there are always 100 different suppliers, who will fill your every need, if the original computer vendors don't. With Mac's the alternatives are often very limited or non-existent.

The 'magic' mouse went against the grain considering Apple's pedigree in product design and ergonomics. I think the RSI suffers will be happy at least.

Worst mouse ever.

Utterly useless when used with any CS application. FAR too sensitive with pages jumping all over the place (InDesign, Illustrator, etc.) and unusable for video editing. The boards are full of these complaints. The only way Apple can remedy these issues is by offering additional control features for this mouse... like the ability to turn off horizontal scrolling, for one, and have these options app by app.

BetterTouchTool or MagicPrefs?

Glad I got one when it first came out!

I have a trackpad too, but it hurts my wrist if i use it too long. Goodbye any professional work!! It's impossible to use that thing for Photoshop, Dreamweaver or InDesign.

I think this phase out of the mouse is premature.

I am a contractor and move myself and my MBP from company to company during the week. I do a LOT of Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign work and my workstation at each company has a monitor, wireless keyboard, and trackpad. I have no issues with pain or with accuracy. I get a kick out of people who plug a mouse into their laptop when there is a perfectly good trackpad built in.

Of course its not true.

Why would they phase out something which almost all design studios use?

Unless they plan on keeping the wired mouse for businesses and schools.

Well, this is one of the stupidest articles I've ever read, and MacRumors should be ashamed of itself for reprinting it and causing us all to waste our time.

Apple - and other manufacturers - often don't replenish items and, in Apple's case, it almost always means that there's a new model coming. Instead, this author makes the ridiculous leap that this means it's being discontinued in favor of a trackpad. They just make this **** up and it earns them a blog? Come on now, have some common sense. This is flame bait and I want my 15 minutes back.

I use my Magic Mouse with my CS 5 applications all the time and have zero complaints. A Wacom is better for some tasks but that's apples and oranges. Surely something's not right with your system. Mine works great.
