Key word being Yet. In 1984, when the first Mac was released, people said the same thing back then - The Mac would never replace the Apple II / Lisa or command line. As we know the rest is history.

If you read my original statement, there is no "yet" in it. Apple may decide to replace desktop/laptop computers, but I can assure you that I will not buy an Apple "computer" that isn't solely in tablet form. I will reluctantly go back to Windows for my personal home computer. It's that simple.

If you are referring to the fact that all manufacturers will only be making tablets, then I will have no choice. But, as long as there's a choice, it's a no brainer, and this is the key point - in my opinion.

Except I didn't say it was the same.

Different people will have different requirements.

I used to have a non retina 15" MBP - when it came to replacing it, I realised I could have the same real estate on a retina 13" as I had on the non retina 15", and a smaller, lighter laptop to boot.

I don't really care how big a screen is - the important thing to me is how much stuff can fit on the screen, and a resolution I am comfortable with.

My point is that the market for 17" laptops was already small before screens got as high res as they are now. And now that they are much higher res, some people who may have preferred a 17" laptop in the past for the real estate would now be fine with a 15".

You might not be in that group, but its still a perfectly valid view to have. And assuming some people share that view, then the already small market for 17" laptops will now be smaller than it was already.

Suppose that I make a 5" display with 5K screen resolution.

Would you say that that would be a good replacement for a 27" 5K display?

They both have the same resolution, after all.

If you take the 12.9" iPP resolution of 2732 x 2048 and squeeze it into a display which has 326 dpi resolution, guess what screen size you get - 10.5"
Yes, i mentioned it later. But what would be the point of this very small diagonal growth?

No, that would obviously be stupid.

I have no idea why you are trying to suggest that going from a non retina 17" screen to a retina 15" screen is as impractical as going from a 27" 5K display to a 5" 5K display.

Because clearly one is completely impractical, and the other isn't.

Good luck running any amount of plugins whilst recording onto the iPad hard drive/memory space and connecting to a decent pro audio interface.
I too use Logic, along with Ableton and a plethora of other music software.

I also use 3D programs, edit video and do a lot of photo editing. I wish Apple would stop putting profits above pro users and get their Mac's updated sharpish. iPad's and iPhone's are ok for some creativity but the mbp and OSX is way ahead in capability for most of us.

I'm not a big user of plug-ins as my needs are simple: I mostly make backing tracks. Garage Band is not sufficient and, IMO, oriented to electronica, hip-hop etc. Logic has enough built in functionality of me. It would be possible to put a slimmed down version of Logic on a properly spec'd iPad Pro, i.e. RAM, etc.
Logic is the only reason I will buy another MBP or iMac. Everything else I do can be handled well with an iPad.

The trend right now is to add a full OS in tablets -- I'm glad Apple is sticking with their guns by not doing that, but a pen and the monicker of "pro" to an iPad is not enough to make it into a full sized computer. You have MacBook Airs or 12" MacBooks for portability/light use.

I don't know how Apple will fill this gap.

I have an iPad Mini 4. In fact, I'm using it right now! lol
What I meant before was that I'd like to see it updated.
Say, to the power of the current iPad Pro: A9X, 4 speakers, TruTone, etc.

Absoposilutely! I makes me insane when all these people say
that the iPad Mini is superfluous because of the iPhone Pluses!
They're nowhere near "the same size" and the iPad Mini is
my overwhelming favorite of all the iPad's form factors.

Please, look at reality.
Not all people have money to get the newest iphone + an ipad!
A lot of people will choose for a bigger(plus) iphone for $100 more than the regular iPhone and a 300 or 400 dollar tablet.
They' ll go for the more expensive iphone and drop the desire to get an ipad(mini). They take one idevice, and perhaps a macbook(air) as a pc, when a bigger screen is needed.

Not all people have money for a iphone, ipad an macbook. The' ll take a crossover device or 2 devices instead of three and accept the trade off. Especially in Asia.

I know one of the PC makers did this (and not well) a few years back, but I keep envisioning Apple pulling it off. The top lid of the next MacBook Pro is an iPad Pro. Magnetic connectors. (also gives people a touch screen on their Mac - which some people have been asking for). When connected to the base unit, it's all MacOS (but, they could always use the CPU in the iPad in slave mode for additional processing punch. As long as you have a data connection on the iPad, you can tunnel back to the Mac in terms of additional file storage (well, what you're not keeping in the cloud of course).

Edit: Ooh, via the smart connector, you could also use the cellular radio of the iPad - so one less device to add to your data plan. :).

They need to figure out a way to put a GPU in the monitor, and then something like a 12" MacBook Pro can become a full desktop.

The Surface Pro is not really a good device. If you use it as a tablet, it only has about 2 hours of battery life and more if you dock with the GPU/keyboard.

Also it's Windows and windows sucks.

I like my sp4. Portability and full Windows is my priority, not battery life. Ymmv.

You know what, I am truly exited about the iPad coming in AMOLED. It will look stunning and seems Apples focus is on innovating iPad with software AND hardware rather than iPhone nowadays.
