For an “incompetent idiot” the company is doing rather well and hasn’t imploded as many in here predicted. In fact, quite the opposite.

That's because today's Apple is a company devoted to their shareholders, not their customers. If you own their stock, you love them. If you want a choice of form-factor computers with current technology at an affordable price, you hate them.

Apple won’t do this. Someone probably got wind of Apple doing research on this technology and assumed it’ll end up in an iPhone.

I’ve tried this on my Samsung devices and in my BMW. Its a stupid idea.

Shareholders wouldn’t be very happy if Apple didn’t have customers buying their products.

I think Apple themselves could post 100 things that might come to fruition in 3 years from almost certainties to says the limit stuff - We could look back on here and see what the rumours were for 2018 from 2015 and how many were spot on ? Not many I bet and perhaps even flying cars were in there :)

I dont see the point in gestures on phones.
Neither do Apple, they admit they're clutching at straws simply to be different.

In a few years people will be playing 'spot the iPhone user' i.e. all the maniacs wagging their fingers at Siri.

It gonna to fit your back pocket nicely and face too.

Next you’re going to hear they’re adding a second notch for the bottom of the display.
They'll put so many notches on it that it will have a sawtooth effect. LOL

"by moving their finger close to the screen without actually tapping it."

What’s the point? Might as well touch the damn display if your finger is going to be close to it.
Except when your hands are dirty. For example, I use my phone sometimes while working on our equipment. It would be nice not having to get someone to help with the phone or clean my hands every time I need to wake up the display or scroll. A poster above mentioned cooking as another example.

I thought they already had bending glass with the iPhone 6 Plus.

Everyone wants "change" and "innovation" but when they change something (or even rumor to) everyone loses their minds..

ex: faceID, these rumors.

I ask this again, what innovation do you want to see in a phone at this point?

Gesture control? Voice control is bad enough without having to wave your hands at it.
No, the Star Trek generation requires touch controls or we don't feel like Mr Spock with a tricorder.

Exactly! These people want something futuristic like this, but the catch is, they only want to pay less than $500 for it...because you know, Apple has BILLIONS of dollars. A lot of this stuff seems like a good idea (and they probably have working prototypes), but its just not realistic right now as it would be TOO costly.

Sorry, I’m sure I won’t be the only one to mention this, but Samsung has already done this.

It may just be the wording in the article, but this honestly seems like a late April Fools post.

with the new tariffs announced today...expect big increases in prices...

This will take butt dialing to a whole new level. ;)

Actually this might bring a cursor to the iPhone as they merge iOS and macOS.

How about a headphone jack? Seriously though ... like current cpu technology, mobile phones have "innovated" so much in the last ten years there's not much left to do but change colors or play with the glass shape. If/when real innovation happens, it will be a "eureka" moment, much like the introduction of the first iPhone was to the mobile phone market at the time.

A curved phone makes sense now that devices are regularly 6". LG already did it with the G Flex four years ago. It will fit against your face much more comfortably than a flat slab. The downside is that the device's effective thickness will be much greater as you will need to take into account the total depth from the lowest point in the center to the highest points at the tips. For fitting into a back pocket, though, it would be much better.

Not so sure about the hover gestures. Microsoft experimented with it and never got it working acceptably. There is too much variance in how steady a person can hold their hand over a device without touching it, and it adds yet another level of complexity to the system. You'll have tap, double tap, tap and hold, 3D touch, and now hover? Users will be looking like wizards casting a spell if they can even remember what all the shortcuts do.
