I am a huge Apple fan! I want a reason to go back to iPhone, especially since my little dispute with Samsung, but there are so many things that I like better about my Note 8 compared to my wife's iPhone 8 plus. Although, I like the iPhones camera better.

My old Note 5 could do touchless gestures while taking pictures and screen shots. It really is not that big of a deal but I like using it. If I unlock my note with my face, it works well as long as it is not in a low light setting. If it doesn't unlock, I can use my finger print scanner or type my pass code. All of these are just small things that I like but would miss if I went back to Apple right now. Another thing I would miss is multi windows, watching YouTube or Netflix while I am on the internet. I am not even sure if iOS does that yet, but if it does, I would seriously consider coming back.

So, I guess the touchless gestures are a step into the right direction. One thing you can always count on is that Apple will have it right before it comes out. Well, most of the time.

Now, I am going back to my Walter Isaacson's Steve Jobs book. I have only read it 3 or more times lol.

I could see a device curving in this way to fit better into a set of AR goggles, but that seems like a bit of a stretch in terms of rumors.

Curved Screen... Touchless gesture controls... and they say Apple doesn't copy Samsung.

I just had to.

I think the hover function will be another layer of interaction, which might complement or replace force touch.
If implemented well and with the right accuracy and it will give a potentially very useful third dimension to user interaction.

It could something as simple as mouse cursor hovering, which gets you a preview of links and stuff like that, or something more advanced, like zooming in or out in maps by adjusting the distance of your finger from the screen.

Next up would be eye tracking so that just eyeing content might be used to bring up popup menus or previews. The technology is almost there, it just needs to become failproof and cheap.

What's so hard,..you tried eBay??,..there are tons available!

I said good screen protectors. They either only cover just the screen, leaving a gap of unprotected curved glass, or they're "full coverage" and aren't compatible with most cases.

Problems you don't have with iPads and iPhone SEs.

I would rather see continued improvement on resolution and durable screen. I would choose flat screen over a curved on as I don’t see any benefits and just more cost to replace if necessary. I would want to see Apple work on making durable and reliable smartphones along with working with network providers for improved and more coverage across the country.

A device can only get so thin until it becomes fragile— we've hit max thin. So the next razzle dazzle feature is gunna have to be something else.

They just need to remove the notch entirely and go back to 16:9 and they'll be cool. Sorry but the current gen of iPhones is pure trash. Also remove the need for pressure sensitivity, it adds to costs and brings almost zero benefit. All this curved nonsense is not needed, edge to edge screens with a pop up camera or something is the way to go.

I love the notch.

Didn't Samsung or someone implement touchless gestures and the crowds on here went wild ridiculing it?

Samsung has done lots of things in their hardware or software that were worth ridiculing, until Apple came along and did them right. Also, Apple's hardware changes have the advantage of being supported by the primary first party developer of the OS and subsequently a lot of third party developers. Samsung can only bolt things onto Android and then try mostly unsuccessfully to convince third parties to care.

How about an iPhone that can read lips instead? So, when you're in a public area, you can "mouth" words into your phone to make it type in your text, without having to voice everything out loud, with everyone around you hearing you, thinking you're some crazy psycho jabbering to yourself.

It would have to be some "really good software" to distinguish regular words from curse words, though.

;):cool::D:cool:;)

I would like a smaller phone with edge to edge display. Not sure I care about curved screens
What's the big deal with curved edges and edge to edge displays. There seems to be a lot of hype about these but I don't get it. I actually like having edges where I have something to hold. I don't envision people lining up iPhones to create a large screen effect.

We'll see how this goes. Would be an amazing software/hardware feat to make it actually work well. I think touchless technology is next, but not sure how well it will work with a phone. The combinations and permutations of potential gestures will be astronomical considering non-touch gestures need to be analyzed in 3D. Lots of programming and lots of processing power.

1) makes it easy to tell at a glance which way is up
2) doesn’t interfere with use at all. When using phone I don’t notice it.
3) makes phone look distinct - not just a slab of glass
Doesn't interfere with games and videos in landscape mode?

"Marketing".

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has a new report out this morning, claiming that Apple is working on future iPhone models that will incorporate "touchless gesture control" as well as curved screens. The company is said to be looking at how it can differentiate its flagship product in a smartphone market that's becoming increasingly saturated with devices.

According to people with knowledge of Apple's plans, the touchless control feature is described as a hover-like gesture system that would let future iPhone owners navigate iOS "by moving their finger close to the screen without actually tapping it." This technology would be advanced enough to take into account the proximity of a finger to the screen and is predicted to still be around two years away, if Apple chooses to move forward with it.

Gurman also compared Apple's gesture design to Samsung's Air Gestures in Android smartphones and Google's Project Soli. In comparison, Apple's future iPhone "would require gestures to be closer to the screen than with Project Soli," and be based on technology built in the display rather than some kind of motion sensor added to the iPhone's bezel, as it is with Air Gestures.

Secondly, Apple is in the works on an iPhone display that curves inward "gradually from top to bottom," unlike Samsung's smartphones that curve down and away at the edges of the screen. Gurman's sources said that this major iPhone upgrade is around two to three years away. The company has been connected to curved display rumors in the past, and in October 2017 was said to be working with LG Display on an iPhone with a foldable display.

The new report also quickly corroborates many of the current rumors for the 2018 iPhone lineup:
Earlier in February, another one of Gurman's reports focused on the launch of iOS 12 later this year, which is believed to feature Animoji in FaceTime, deeper Siri integration, and an overall focus on quality rather than the introduction of many new features.

Eventually iPhones will be able to "read" eye movements. If technology can "read faces" it's just a matter of time for "eye movement reading/blinking lids reading" to become mainstream.
