maybe releasing siri on other devices
My bet is it's Newsstand related, probably intended to (somehow) boost that category within the app store.

Looks like some "new" products have a history of coming out Jan/Feb.
The New York Times? Murdoch is also based there, and has an existing digital-only publication for the iPad, so it could also be the Wall Street Journal?
Bet on this. Not saying how I know...
Apple will be announcing a combined iPad and MacBook. The new laptop will have a screen that detaches from the base laptop. The 'screen' will be an iPad 3 with retina resolution.
iPad 3 will only be available at first as a detachable from the new macbooks. In the spring the iPad 3 will be available as a stand alone unit. They are hoping to spur sales of the macbooks by doing this (and they will sell tons, guaranteed).
Textbooks and more newspapers will be announced at the same event.
I'm hoping it's a new apple tv too. I'm in the market for a home media center computer.
iBooks and Newsstand on the desktop, perhaps?
Because I'm a voracious reader, the display is critical for my needs. E-Ink as implemented by Amazon's Kindle is the very best for reading. When it comes to electronic books I too, greatly prefer Kindle books.Hope so as I am not interested in purchasing any iBooks or Newsstand content until it is readable on the desktop. Until then I will stick with Kindle content which works on every device I own (including PCs).

In addition being highly mobile, I truly appreciate the size, ultra lightweight & terrific battery life of the latest Kindle's. The cross platform compliance of Kindle books is also quite convenient when I'm out for shorter periods and carrying only my MBA.
E-ink is completely awesome. The high contrast of some phone/tablet screens really isn't that easy on the eyes for reading. It's not great for anything really. It just gives you bright, flashy, unrealistic color palettes which do not necessarily reflect the way the content should look.
