I just got a "phablet", a Windows Phone 8 (Nokia 1520). I was very hesitant to do so, after having an iPhone 5S. Unlike other people, I don't have a problem with the 5S size, and I think it was just about perfect.
BUT, I was torn between always wanting my tablet with me when wanting to read, or even browse the web. Personally, I think the tablets have spoiled me, because I remember being ecstatic in being able to browse the web on my original iPhone
That said, I really have come to appreciate it. I think the problem I have is more in the edges on Nokia's implementation of this "phablet" (I hate that word). The corners are not very rounded - unlike the iPhone 6 prototypes. Folks here may enjoy a larger screen iPhone more than you might think, particularly if you find yourself taking an iPad with you at the same time.
I couldn't wait due to work and development commitments (I am being contracted to work on a Windows 8 app), so I got the Nokia. But if I did wait to get the iPhone 6, I would have probably gotten the larger screen size so I have the divide of:
- Phone/Casual Browsing/Reading/Surfing (Lumia/other Phablet like 5.5" iPhone 6)
- Work / Serious Research/Reading (Surface Pro 3/other Laptop like Macbook Pro/Air)
Otherwise I sort of had 3 devices, and I never really had a clean separation between them. Now, I do.
But as they say - YMMV!
