I just don't see a >5" iPhone coming.

That is just so not Apple.

At least, it would be so contradictory on one thing, how would they explain the deep-minded one hand usage.

They won't 'explain' anything. They will just say 'look at our great new iPhone with this awesome screen'.

Information that came out during the Samsung trial made it very clear that Apple themselves acknowledged that their market wants bigger-screened phones. The trial was not a rumor, hype, or doubled-down redirection. Bigger-screened iPhones are coming.

Acknowledging that larger screen phones are wildly popular, and actually acting upon that info are two competely different things.

I'm still hoping for a larger 4.7" iPhone 6, but I wouldn't be completely shocked if one doesn't come out and Apple chooses to keep the same 4" size.

2017 iPhone and iPad Mini merge
2021 iPhone and iPad merge
2025 iPhone and iPad Pro merge

By 2025, I think the phones will be on a single chip that's been embedded in our brains. See, no hardware needed!

Am I reading this right?

In one breath you're discounting that Apple may release a 5.5" iPhone and then in the next you're "hoping" for a 4.7" but won't be shocked if it doesn't come out??

Where have you been reading your rumors/news?

Hi Lenny, not sure where you getting 5.5" from. That never once came up.

What I said was that I am hoping for a 4.7" iPhone 6, but I wouldn't be completely surprised if Apple sticks to the same phone size as the current 4" 5S. If you read my earlier posts, you'd see that I have mentioned the lack of Foxconn/Pegatron iPhone 6 production line leaks from the manufacturing process. If rumors are true and Apple is upping their qty to 60-80 million units to satisfy all iP6 customers at launch, I would think the full iPhone 6 production process would be well under way by now.

All we've seen to date are tons of (digital/printed/poorly machined) mockups all based on the supposed "leaked" iPhone 6 spec from last March.

We've been through this many times before. So until we see the legit blurry pics from Apple's manufacturing partners, I'm not ruling anything out.

I highly doubt Apple will screw it's customers over after 2-3 months and release a 5.5" iPhone without at least announcing them simultaneously together.

I hope they do. The entertainment value it would provide here would be epic.

I bet there is only 1 iPhone 6 (4.7") then the 5.5" device will be the iTelePad announced in Oct with the other iPads. Since 5.5" size hardly qualifies for a phone. :) The iTelePad will be a hybrid iPhone/iPad and will be the item Eddy Cue was talking about being the best product pipeline he has seen in 25 yrs.

If you want one handed operation, buy the smaller iPhone. If you don't mind two handed operation, or if you have large hands, buy the larger iPhone. Simple no?

Once you own a phone that is still very trim with a 5.5" display it is very hard to go back to a smaller screen. Trust me.:)

Just curious, how do you manage to fit a device with a 5.5" display in your front pocket? If you were to move rapidly, such as at the gym, running, hiking, etc.... would it not snap in two / cover your entire thigh? and then to get it out of your pocket / more likely backpack, you have to palm it like a basketball.

Just curious. I'm sure the display is killer... and such.

As long as the two phones are equal in specs, yes, that's fine. The iPad Air and mini give people a choice based on the size of the screen, which unless I've missed a thread or two, no one has complained about....

Come on 5.5". I'm having to charge the 4S twice a day, the home button requires force and usually puts me into a multitasking or siri loop.. Can't wait another 12 months..

You missed the most crucial threads, the rumors of an iPad Mini BEFORE there was an iPad Mini. Since Apple- particularly Steve Jobs- was on record as identifying the iPad 9.7" screen as the minimum size for a tablet (link in post #62 if you need to see it for yourself), there was overwhelming bashes for the early iPad mini rumors. A few would post how they wanted a mini, only to be countered by the bulk who towed the Apple line…

Then Apple rolled it out and thus officially endorsed the Mini. "Shut up and take my money", "best iPad ever", etc.

The lesson of the story: whatever Apple rolls out as an iPhone 6 will swing this pre-launch sentiment to mostly endorse it (and resume bashing any other phones that differ much from it). If they only rolled out a 5.5", this crowd would "shut up and take my money". If they only roll out a 4", "shut up and take my money". If they roll out 2 or 3 sizes, "shut up and take my money" along with a "which one should I buy?" threads. All this "need new pants pockets" and "one handed use" will just evaporate like it always does when rumor becomes (officially endorsed) reality and Apple shifts it's official stance on some topic like perfect screen size.

3.5" was once the one and only perfect size for a phone screen and "4"-5" were skateboards" (see same link). "We" bashed everything bigger than 3.5" to death. When rumors of a 4" from Apple came up, it was a ton of "abomination", "fragmentation", blah-blah-blah. Then the rumors piled up and the passionate bashes started fading into "wait and see" and "it's kind of growing on me". Then reality and "shut up and take my money". Then anything over 4" was the "abomination" and now that's fading such that it seems like most of that crowd is now pretty accepting of the 4.7" as the coming new "perfect" while the 5.5" is probably going to be a new "abomination"… unless Apple rolls that out too.

Personally? While I'm only interested in one size for me, I hope they roll out all 3 sizes because not everybody has my hand size. I also have a perfect pant size, shirt size, shoe size too but I don't wish that the pant/shirt/shoe stores would get rid of all the sizes not "perfect" for me and only carry the sizes I deem ideal.

If I want to post with my Apple-as-a-business hat on, rolling out BOTH sizes of bigger screens pretty much mitigates much reasoning for buying bigger-screen Android phones for all who prefer iOS but really want bigger screens. Those 2 rumored sizes in particular seem like they could soak up all the screen size desires from >4" to 6+". From a "die Samsung die" perspective, roll out only 4.7" and it's leaving the >5" market to Samsung, etc. Why do that? Fill that hole now (too) and there's little reason left for the OS indifferent to buy Samsung, etc other than maybe price.

And from a stockholder perspective, more than one choice means winning more buyers rather than turning them away to the competition, so revenues & profits should rise.

Choices yield a win for everyone. I can't ever grasp how some of "us" can wish away sizes other than they one we pre-perceive is the ONE for ourselves. What's it even matter to us as individuals if Apple also rolls out some other-size screens? If my "perfect" is 4.7" and Apple delivers that, why should I give a hoot if others can buy a new 4" or a new 5.5"?

If Apple doesn't release a 5.5 inch model this year, I don't see them releasing it next year. If it isn't released this year, it'll probably be released in 2016.

Same here. I didn't really care for the idea of a larger phone until I went from my 4S to the original HTC One. After that, the only thing I hated about switching to a 5 (and then 5S) was the smaller screen.

Hopefully they don't take too long on the 5.5" model. I think I'll be getting it, and it will be my first iPhone. I can't wait to give iOS a shot. I have no major issues with Android, but I'm still interested to see how I like iOS.

And if you still carry a fanny pack, buy the large one but if you carry in your pocket buy the smaller one.
