Apple Planning New Prototype Retail Store in Palo Alto

Looking at the planning documents it looks like the new site will be replacing what used to be a Z-Gallery on University Ave which closed last year, it's in a very prominent location on University Ave. The existing building has a open two-story section at the front with stairs up to a second level at the back but it's my guess they will just gut the whole thing and start over.

Looking forward to seeing it and spending some time there.

That's a very good location. I didn't even realize the zgallery closed.

I reckon that being a forum devoted to Apple, there's more members that blindly click positive than negative on the front page stories.

Further, I can easily see how someone might find this idea a little odd. There's a fine line between tactful nature and the Rainforest Cafe. While I'm sure Apple knows how to ride this line, there's always a chance they fall flat on their faces.

(For the record, I haven't voted either way on this story...)

Would be nice to see the stores get a little brave in design. Most of the UK ones are just standard shopping centre units. Albeit very nicely designed inside but they could be more impressive.

What about the Microsoft stores

Haven't heard much about the MS Store with thri 'Guru' bars... Any link someone can provide?

I think this is a positive and sounds like it could be quite nice.

The only negative is the way the language is mangled by the developer.

"Fully half the function of the store serves to provide education and service to business as well as customer patrons in addition to product sales. The store is a commons for the applicant's community to gather."

Lets hope the store is brilliant but they leave the awkwardness in their office.

Indeed, but it would be hard to argue there isn't plenty of blind clicking on either side. The war goes on...

Heh, Rainforest Cafe. I hate that place. Perhaps in the Apple store in addition to rain and thunder every 20 minutes they could have an animatronic Steve Ballmer swing down from the trees to scare the children?

DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS, DEVELOPERS! OOH OOH EEE EEE! NOW GET IN ME BELLY!

*mass panic ensues*

Hmm, maybe that wouldn't be such a great idea after all...

Try this one.

The boys in Redmond have to pissed about this. Just when they finished copying (yet again) from Apple, Apple goes and changes it again.

Why?

I have to wonder why people who hate Apple, Inc. have nothing better to do than post negative comments on a forum that is for Mac users?

Hey, I went kicking and screaming to Mac because I do music production and I couldn't see spending the extra for a Mac that was just for music. On my PC, I had to turn off Bluetooth and turn off my network card. Basically I had to baby the machine and it was constantly getting errors. I was talking to someone whom I respect and they told me to get a Mac. I balked and said I couldn't justify spending the extra for a Mac to just have it do music. He looked bewildered and upon further questioning found out about the Bluetooth etc. issues. He laughed and said, "It's a Mac and you don't have to do that, you can do production and still use it for everyday stuff." I was skeptical but I took his advice and made the plunge.

Ok, so now I am indeed a Mac fanboy and I don't have any problem with it. The way I look at it is: If you like constantly having to mess with your computer to make it do what it is supposed to do (Honest, I know geek types who love that stuff) then great, buy a PC. If however you want a computer that is as transparent as one can be and just does what it was designed to do, get a Mac.

Sincerely,
Fanboy Dave :D

I'm jealous! I want to live in the Bay Area, and may consider it, but your fortunate to live so close to the center of innovation.

Thank you, you're right, I am quite fortunate living in the Bay Area. I live a total of 30 minutes round trip from 6 Apple stores and and 30 minutes one way from Apple in Cupertino. The Bay Area is the heart of Silicon Valley. I go to every Macworld in San Francisco, but this year I won't be attending sadly, now that Apple and Adobe have bailed out, it's no more fun. :(

There's only one store here in the whole state of Indiana and it's tiny. I used to like going there, but now I dread it because it's always wall-to-wall people.

I think apple should invent the iHorn...a special people-sized shoe horn to fit everyone into the store. Think of it as an apple branded version of those Japanese guys who pack the people into the subway cars.

Seriously (and I've written this before), they should physically remove the genius bar and all the training stuff which would help greatly. Next they should really do more to create "environments" within the store i.e. stores within a store. Like areas for iPhone / iPod, mobile computing devices (MBP, MB Air, Tablet), desktop (iMac / MP / Mac Mini / Monitors), an accessories and software area and I'd like to see a brand new "Lifestyle" area dedicated to the AppleTV and home networking.

Perhaps you meant Silicon Valley is the heart of the Bay Area? :p Regardless, I agree with you. I've always enjoyed living in this area - no matter what side of the hill it may be :D

Regent Street store in London is somewhat like that - downstairs, notebooks on your left, desktops on your right. Go up the stairs and Genius, training etc is straight in front of you, iPod/iPhone and accessories to your right and software to your left.

Reasons this might not work:

1. Birds. There will be poop, nest-defending, huge raptors attacking people.

2. Nearby businesses will complain that their customers are going to the Apple store instead of their own. Seriously, this happens. It can't be explained.

3. People will pee behind the trees like they do in real forests.

4. Nudists will demand the right to frolic amongst the foliage.

5. Bears. Once the bears get in, they own it and will defend their territory in the formidable way they do that.

6. Skaters. For so many reasons.

7. Bees. Killer bees especially.

8. Someone will trip on a root and sue for millions.

9. Hobos, as mentioned by somebody earlier. They have an amazingly strong political base, so it is hard to get rid of them.

10. Ever lived through oak worm infestations? Billions of worms on everything. Kills sales.

11. Sap. Ha, nobody thought of that, did they? Sap on every keyboard and screen. Hard to clean off and ruins the Apple experience.

12. Snakes. People won't pick up even free Apple products if there are giant cobras curled up on top of them.

13. It is like a fern bar, but with trees. Will the iMartini catch on? Pure water, half an oz of expensive vodka, served in a designer glass with an ice cube shaped like an apple. Only $14.95, attractive napkin optional.

14. Still sounds interesting and will grab all the attention, again leaving other companies looking dull. I'll go see it for sure.

Palo Alto doesn't need another sausage factory.

They already have the Old Pro. :p

Can we NOT go off topic and talk about "Bay Area" and "Sausage"??

WHY?

Because, alas, i cannot buy Italian Dry Salami here in FL...... (and if someone knows a source in central florida, share please!). I'm thinking some relative from CA should have sent me some for CHristmas! :D

Back to debating birds and pollen and people peeing "behind" the trees in the new apple store :p

I heard from a deep in the company friend where the store is going to actually have artificial clouds inside and an artificial sun type light with blue sky to make it actually feel like you are in a nice park. They are gonna have a lake in the store with water fall and a small rowboat for customers to navigate from one end to the store to the genius bar.

With gazebos, and the whole thing even a petting zoo.

Indoor trees and transparent facades? That design is going to drive the squirrels nuts! Not to mention, birds flying into the windows.
