It's a japan centric picture set. That top row is more or less considered "race neutral" over there. The old couple on the right is how Japanese would draw an old Japanese man or woman.

Also what happens to all the extremely Japanese ones that depict daily life or seasonal things in Japan? Do we need to add equivalents for every country?

Why is this thread in Politics, Religion, Social Issues? Did I miss something. Is this an emotive subject?

Yes, by definition, thats what emoji is.

i know you are being somewhat sarcastic but you raise an interesting point. There will always be someone not happy. Not happy cause something isn't included, not happy cause it is. So perhaps the answer is to shift to a plug in supporting system and let folks download what they want rather than it being included by default. Apple could still vet it, require it to go through their system etc.

I would actually use something like the Facebook messenger stickers more than emoji.

----------

I want a Jonny Ive. Created out of laser cut Al-u-mini-um

I think Line pioneered the stickers before facebook took the idea. Its a free download - check it out.

Any characters added to Unicode would also be available for other platforms to use, so unless Google is anti-diversity they'll get them too (but you might need to buy a new phone to get the update).

I think this is going to make it more necessary to rethink how emoji is accessed on the keyboard though. It's already a pain to switch keyboard sets back and forth. There should be an emoji button on the main language keyboards, and perhaps text shortcodes like :grin or :cat to quickly substitute them in without having to hunt for the icon.

I would like to see this but the simplicity of apple needs to stay so :cat: won't work to great. But I would be happy going in to settings and picking the emoji I want no the main keyboard. It would be this one #. I use that all the time

jesus, people. Really? How the hell does a thread about the emoji set get sent down to prsi? Are we really that damn obnoxious?

Yes, folks will always be obnoxious when they can take cheap shots about being PC. Of course you can't do the reverse, then you're just being reverse racist.

cork asian; an irish indian :p

better not upset the pc crowd - better create smileys for every civilisation, if this is to be taken seriously, or there'll be a riot at pc-correctness towers.

Make me all grey or orange and then everybody should be happy.

I always thought the features of the faces were already quite generic.

I wish they would bring back the dancing guy that kinda looks like Frankenstein running... Now all that's left that's good is the smiling pile of poo...

Prší, a card game
Independent Socialist Republican Party (French: Parti Républicain Socialiste Indépendent)
Pay Related Social Insurance, in Ireland
Pasadena Refining System

Which PRSI are you talking about? And what does Jesus and Hell have to do with this?

I thought those "white" emojis were actually Japanese color emojis. The same as in jap anime using white features, but they still consider them jap features and not white/USA/etc.

I guess they could do them all in yellow color. Kinda like the Simpsons and the original yellow emojis #

I take my post back, I see why this is in PRSI now. Everyone in the world is apparently racist or reverse racist or reverse reversely racist in some way. Just turn all the emoji people a nasty green color.

Just as long as it remains an option to use them, I don't really care either way. Emoji are usually hard to see though because they're smaller than text, so they're much harder to make out than say a smiley like :) or something along those lines.

Oh well.

What does hyphenation have to do with multiple ethnicities having similar skin colors? And what does that have to do with "PC crap"? Usually the person complaining about "PC crap" is the racist/sexist/homophobe in the room. Just sayin'.

Nobody can be that obtuse. And couldn't care less on your little PC theory. Just sayin.

There's no such thing as "reverse racism." If someone is racist toward a white person, it's just called "racism."

And "political correctness gone wrong" in this situation would be if some group were to call for a widespread boycott of Apple products due to the lack of diversity in the emoji.

But that's not what's happening.

What's happening is simple progress. Good for them. I want as many different emoji as possible #

I think that doing this is, ironically, very racist. Focusing on the "race" of little icons and make sure every "race" is represented in them is absurd and, actually, impossible (there are infinite "races").

They should go all the other way and make the icons generic, like sylouhettes or totally different from any "race" (eg: green color and blue funny hair).
If anybody wants to feel represented in an icon, please use a custom avatar/icon.

Why would you think it's that weird that a guy with brown hair and brown skin wouldn't want to represent himself with a blonde haired, blue eyed guy with light skin?

Dear Apple,

Please add the "eye-rolling smiley" so I can use it to comment on this story.

Sincerely,
T.Will
