We don't need more races, we need more yellow faces and animals!

This. I've never used the ethnic emoji's. I always use the smilies, animals, objects and stuff. I've used the squirt and eggplant one a lot too (don't ask). That's the fun of emoji's. They are neutral. No bias to anything.

That is a racist comment... we need green faces too, and blue... oh and don't forget purple and red. I mean those are the colors that MacRumor uses. Basically, we should have all the emoticons in all 64 colors from the 64 crayon Crayola box.

On a more serious note, it seems to me that in my circle it is only the younger in the crowd that use pictorial emoticons. At best, my group has mastered the text based smiley face. Although there is a debate between :) and :) among the less techy folks in the group.

Anyone that does a smiley like :) - is a teenage girl thinking she's all cute and ****. Everyone knows smilies go this way :) - That is a HUGE pet peeve. Lol - I will disown you as a friend if you ever send me a backwards smiley. No questions asked.

Just add more smileys, I never ever encountered someone using the human looking ones

That's because they aren't Caucasian, they were originally designed for Japan, they are ORIENTAL!

Why is this ignoramaous still getting internet attention? (The person referred to who thinks they are Caucasian and racist)

Can we please stop quoting this b.s.??

FYI, outside of Japan you used to have to get a special app and code to unlock emoji until apple unlocked it in iOS 4 or 5. They were intended for use in Japanese culture.

Easy solution. Client side emoji sets. Change a setting and then all your emoji are belong to you now.

Just specify what race you want your emoji to be and bam. Then if you feel offended that there is no green emoji just set your emoji pref to green.

* EDIT * DO NOT READ THIS IT IS NONSENSE

So one emoji is about 64x64 pixels, at 3 bytes per pixel that is an uncompressed size of 12k per Emoji.
And lets say there are a 1000 of them ( there isn't anywhere near that number in reality ) then that would take about 12MB of your storage.

Lets assume you have the smallest iPhone available, the 16GB model, that means the 1000 Emojis will take up 0.00000732%

Now, you are free to care about whatever you want, its your life, and I respect that, but just as your friend ( and we are friends right? ) I don't think you need to worry about 0.00000732% of your storage being used up on Emojis.

* WHOEVER WROTE THIS HAS BRAIN CANCER
It's not just the pointless little emojis though, is it? It's all the other crap that Apple won't let me remove as well.

And even 12MB (of the 32GB that I have) could be put to better use with a few audio files.

But we can still be friends.

Not really. For example I'm "white" (whatever that means) and I see the racism in your image.

Making negative generalisations about people based on their skin colour / race is racism. That's either true for all races or none at all.

There, I think I win. What's my prize?

I saw that too. It seems that you could also say "It's hard for those being racist against whites to see what they are doing is wrong."

I actually think this is legitimately useful and great, at least as far as emoji-related things go. It's not too much to ask to be able to "represent myself" using emoji that at least somewhat resemble me. :)

Why not just display the Emojis based on the colour of my iPhone?
Its obviously that 99.9% of black iPhone owners have dark skinned skin, and about the same percentage of white iPhone owners have skins in the RGB colour range 0xFEFEFE -> 0xFFFFFF

iPhone 5c users, they obviously more interested in waving 'rainbow flags' if you know what I mean , wink, wink, ;)

( Y'see, I'm not being racist I'm being homophobic by suggesting the iPhone 5C owners like to kiss and cuddle human sapiens of the identical gender to themselves because iPHONE5C comes in lots of colours THEEND )

Nope, you missed the point of the image, and you're still wrong.

Oh, and by the way, your privilege is showing.

I think this is going to make it more necessary to rethink how emoji is accessed on the keyboard though. It's already a pain to switch keyboard sets back and forth.

Agreed but I'd go further. Apple needs to both redesign the keyboard (why to put a * or % or # do I have to switch to the symbols and then shift.) and allow us to customize it. Give me the option of a fourth row of keys that I can assign to symbols, shortcuts, numbers, or, yes, even emoji. That way I'd be able to have the 10 things I use most right at hand. The idea of switching between alpha, symbols1, symbols2, or emoji keyboards was fine on a phone but it's just way too kludgy for a larger device like an iPad.

Hey Apple, if you want the iPad to be a content creation device, start by improving the keyboard.

You Win

I'm really happy to concede this one and agree you are right. I feel like I lost a lot of credibility when my mathematicals calculations were off by a factor of 10,000,000 !
I'm not exagerating, I editing the original message a few times and even when I finished it was still off by 10,000

Can you still be friends with someone so nasty? Did I mention my brain might have brain cancer?

Yes please!!!

And some moving emoji also... Like a smiley face that shake because he's laughing so much...!

(so we can feel like we're back to the old animated-gifs era)

Which PRSI are you talking about? And what does Jesus and Hell have to do with this?

Are you talking about the real "Jesus"? or Jesus the guy on the Mexican restaurant?

I find it amusing and (sadly) expected that an article titled "Apple Planning to Add More Diversity to Emoji Character Set" has people actually complaining in the forums, while completely and obliviously convinced of their own "righteousness". That is why in the forum section that it is. The moderators knew, and anticipated correctly.

Sad, really, they were right.

Guys, the correct response for the article is : "yay", or "cool", or "alrighty", etc.

Those who don't get that (in this day and age), won't get that. As such, I'll leave it at that.

Was this a real question? There were no emoji to guide my understanding. If it was, read the name of the forum you are in.

It's easy, actually. Just watch NBA coverage.

What does hyphenation have to do with multiple ethnicities having similar skin colors? And what does that have to do with "PC crap"? Usually the person complaining about "PC crap" is the racist/sexist/homophobe in the room. Just sayin'.

I find it to be exactly the opposite. The most racist to me are the PC people that go around identifying others as racist, sexist, etc-ist. They sure seem to be experts.

I dont understand why apples emoji are unicode standard. They dont work on any other platforms/device than apples messages services. Cant they add like thousands of emojis if they want.

But anything that has Unicode support has the ability to build in emoji support. It's up to the device vendor to create the actual icons, which is how you can send a smiley face to anyone, but not necessarily the same picture. I'm on my work PC and more than 90% of these emoji are just showing their Unicode entry number.

Apple could very easily change the pictures to show african-american/black, asian or hispanic people. But they can't add all options because there needs to be unicode entries for both. That's what this is about, adding new entries to the standard.

The issue in my mind isn't equality but a matter of organization (though I'll freely admit I'm white). If we have entries for Caucasian, asian, black, hispanic and native american, do we add all of the possible combinations as well? By that, I mean, do we need interracial couples in every possible combination (both race and sexual orientation)? Are we concerned only about faces or about the hand signals as well? Should companies render a complete set of thumbs up icons for every skin tone?

What starts out as a page or two of icons quickly spirals into a disheveled mess.
