caucasian does mean white.. we're not in the 18th century anymore, you know?

Where I come from, when people hear the word "caucasian" the think you are coming from some mountain region between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, and are most likely an Eastern Orthodox Christian, Oriental Orthodox Christian, or Sunni Muslim.

Alternatively, they think you are a stupid American cop talking on TV :D

----------

Why have race specific ones at all? They just look... odd. Emoticons should just be yellow or cat is fine I guess.

They are not race specific. They are "Girl", "Boy", "Man", "Woman" etc. without any race specified. Whoever designed the pictures could have drawn anything that can be identified as a girl, boy, man or woman. That's why I suggested having different fonts because fonts display the same symbol in different ways. Like g and g, which is the same letter looking very different.

no they don't

In regards to being taken seriously we're talking about emojis here not the civil rights movement. ****ing relax.

Again, I am very chill, and the emoji's weren't the point.

If you need to point to them, even though I was never talking about them in the first place, just to validate your comment, then sure.

Take your own advice ******

white people deserve all the racism they may get.. in the future, we're not going to simply fall from #1 to #2.. oh nvrmnd- let louis tell you:

Agreed, and this is definitely where most folks angst is coming from.

Yes and no. I think the implementation is correct: each company creates it's own images. But I don't adding multiple emoji sets addresses the problem. Not to mention that already the icons are changed when you send a message across platforms. Dark-skinned iPhone user sets his to dark-skinned emoji, light skin Android user with completely different icon set receives a message just as always.

Some are race specific. These come from Apple and are built into Mavericks ...

# Man With Gua Pi Mao — a hat commonly worn in the Qing Dynasty.

# Man with Turban — Middle East. Not a race, but a cultural reference.

# Man — Caucasion

So Apple already has emoji that reference racial or cultural types.

Those are also part of the standard (or a proposed part of the standard).

A standard set that should include other races and cultures.

Why have just three?

The world is far more diverse than that.

Eh. The emoji set is supposed to be a simple way to convey a mood via text. Including every race, color, and creed that might express the same universal emotions we're all capable of would make it bloated and extra complicated to deal with.

What would the symbol for the white guy smiley be?

What about the black guy?

What about the Jewish one?

What about the Asian one?

The Samoan one?

Hell, all I want to do is post a : D after someone says something funny.

I agree with the guy above. Make 'em blue or green and call it a day.

It has not been proposed (AFAIK) to include "every race, color, and creed".

I think you're confusing "smiley" with the other emoji characters.

Here is the Apple emoji set ...

^^^ yes, ^^^ you've got it...all the rest are symbols, some international, some japanese culturally, with a few Apple (int'l standard?) added for iOS 6.

Personally, I just want one yellow smiley with rolling eyes, but, apple probably won't do it, as, in some cultures it may be as rude as giving the finger.

A yellow smiley with a shrug or question mark would be nice too.

(got those here on this forum)

I agree that adding all races/cultures would bloat it out so much, we'd have too much to scroll through.

When my 6 year old granddaughter saw those her question was where is "Hello Kitty" :p

# baby
# boy
# girl
# man (father)
# woman (mother)
# older man (grandpa)
# older woman (grandma)

# Man with Gua Pi Mao (a hat commonly worn in the Qing Dynasty)
# Man with turban (most likely represents a guru ...it's japanese, they are more hindu, this is NOT a reference to a particular race)
# Police Officer
# Construction Worker (would be orange hat if american)
# Guardsman (doesn't fit american culture)
# Person with blonde hair (could have multiple meanings, but, again, emoji are oriental origin, and rare for them to have blonde hair)
# baby angel
# Princess

these all seem to me to be emoticons for oriental culture, (their faces are very round too). (Again, emoji originated w/the japanese, see my first comment in this thread).

Also, the cat faces and red masks also are an oriental cultural thing.

I wish we could just get a better cultural understanding. Americans seem to wear blinders as if we are "it". PC americans think we have to be diverse in everything, so now we might end up with 10x more pages of these things to scroll through

Because scrolling is so hard on a computer.

And Lord knows there'd be no way to organize the content.

That would be virtually impossible.

A bridge too far.

;)

But as I asked before, where is the line drawn? Do we add every skin type and sexual orientation?

It's already a pain to browse emoji on the iPhone. This will only make it worse. I'm not denying that this is an issue that we need to address. I don't have the answer either, but I'm not sure that this is it.
