Same here. Wanted to order today. Whaaaaaat should I do????

I just got the iMac 5k 27" 4 Ghz last week and I plan to return next week. I'm frustrated that it doesn't support Target Display Mode (TDM) meaning that it can't be used as a monitor for another computer. I work from home and want to use it as a monitor for my work laptop when needed.

I did some video editing and I can tell you that this Mac can get very loud during video encoding. When all 4 cores are busy working the fans really ramp up to turbo. Otherwise you can't hear anything until normal activity. I'd prefer the less power hungry and therefore less hot Skylake. I'd appreciate any extra processing power that would come along with it as video encoding of 1080p material can take many many hours. I refuse to buy the MacPro since it's 2013 hardware and there is no 4k or 5k Apple Monitor to plug it into anyway.

I plan to wait until the Spring now...which sucks.

Why no standard UHD? simply double the pixel density like the 27". Or do they need 4096 for 4K Advertising?

It would be the same PPI as the 27 inch iMac. They could presumably get the displays from the same source and it would be cheaper.

I expected 3840x2160 as well, but an increase in display area wouldn't be a bad thing.

What's wrong with external storage? I'd rather have an SSD boot drive inside and 3 TB HDD outside.
Time machine does not back it up and I don't want to deal with a 3rd party solution

Have you ever watched Netflix 4K content? I ask because I have not. But I have watched plenty of NetFlix's HD content. And it is utter garbage compared to a Blu-Ray disc. It may technically be 1080p, just like I'm sure their 4K content is technically 4K. But that doesn't mean the bitrate is any good. And for the record, Prime's HD is also inferior to Blu-Ray, as is everything "HD" I've ever downloaded from iTunes.

I agree with the person you replied to. There is NO 4K content right now. Everything is moving to streaming or digital download, and these are all still inferior to 1080p Blu-Ray. 4K is a meaningless feature of a television until we have streaming that exceeds the quality of 1080p Blu-Ray.

4K for a computer monitor, unrelated to media consumption, is very nice, though. Pixels actually matter when you need the extra space for working or the extra crispness when editing images, etc. I'd run a triple 5K monitor setup if I could afford it, but my television still has literally zero reason to be better than 1080p at this time.
Today I was looking at 4K TV sets at Walmart and was approached by a DirectTV salesman claiming that all their channels are in 4K...yeah right

I suspect a Skylake 27" 5k is coming next month, not Spring 2016

Hope so, my poor 2013 rMBP is barely able to cope with my workflow, the poor thing really struggles.
I have been waiting for a 5k rImac since they were first released, glad i waited for skylake though.

There some pretty solid and reliable RAID set-ups available

Because Skylake isn't ready - i'm not sure why people seem to assume Apple will be implementing it 3 months before its actually available, rather than the more realistic 3 months AFTER its available. You'll be looking at Skylake iMacs this time NEXT year and Skylake Macbook Pros mid 2016.

Skylake systems are already coming out and starting to ship September and October. There is no reason Apple could not start releasing Skylake systems this year.

Time Machine can back up external storage, it just defaults to excluding external drives. The only thing you have to do is to remove the external drive from TM's exclusion list.

Okay, I'm just going to do my usual here... So now it's about time for that 4K portable Mac to come out?! 17" or whatever it takes, I don't care, I would happily carry it to my location jobs.
Hello Apple? Remember us professionals? Yeah, the ones that got you through the 90's?
Pretty please?

And lastly, given the recent rumor of the newly redesigned keyboard and Force Touch Magic Trackpad and Magic Mouse releasing in 2016, that would mark the perfect time to update the design on the iMac since Apple always releases newly redesigned input devices along with newly redesigned iMacs.

It'd be nice to see Apple release a full size BT keyboard w/ keypad, preferably with black keys instead of white. Not holding my breath though.

So you are an Apple employee and commenting on things the company is keeping secret?

I think you will find you are wrong in your assumption. We will all find out together.

Next year.

And exactly what system is it you have that can drive a 5k 27" screen say even if it did support target mode? Even better, how would you hook up a 5k display to whatever you have? Now remember, one 5k is equivalent of 4 regular imacs in target mode.

How about just releasing a Brand new beautiful 4k thunderbolt display for my retina macbook PRO!
Why are they abandoning us macbook pro users that need more screen space. So easy just to upgrade.
Even a temporary upgrade with thunderbolt 2 and usb 3 ports I would purchase. PLEASE!

Man... Mac Pro is taking another punch from Apple (in the face). what happened here?

The iMac 5k would just need to upscale any lower resolution image it receives up to 5k. No different then when you send a 720p image to your 1080p TV. The TV will automatically upscale it to 1080p. The concept is nothing new.

Pretty cool. I think 21" is a little small. I'd rather get 27" but I think 24" would be a nice middle ground.

21" is a little small, but I bet Apple wants to stick around 215ppi. Believe it or not, but a 21" 4K monitor is slightly less pixel dense than a 27" 5K iMac. The amount of pixels the iMac is pushing is massive.

But then you'll complain that it looks fuzzy?
