Ever watch average Joe American try to navigate the self-serve kiosk at the airport? You want that guy building your Mac Pro?

You assume that someone who caught your attention at the airport constitutes a random sample representative of the average American, that the average American will be assembling your Mac Pro, and that your observations are a valid indicator of their intelligence.

Do you think any of that is really meaningful in the context of decision-making?

I don't mind US companies getting tax breaks if it means creating more jobs.

It's really sad that people fall for that nonsense when such policies destroy more jobs than they create. Tax breaks tend to favor larger companies over smaller ones, potentially leading to more consolidation. They are not a good substitute (or a part of) sensible tax policy.

Saw the headline and thought "'big, big big'?" That doesn't sound like something that Apple would... OH OF COURSE."

So he wants an import tax of stuff made abroad & shipped into the US, but last week whined that Justin Trudeau was unfair because Canada will continue to charge a fee for imported US lumber into Canada. Only in Trumpland can you have it both ways, or cry like a 2yo martyr.

To stay on topic:
• This deal was probably more than 6 months in the making. So he'll steal credit even if Obama had a lot, little, or nothing to do w/ this announcement.
• Apple will not pass any savings on to its customers w/ tax breaks & may in fact charge more a partly American made iPhone.
• The jobs will be temporary for building (probably using Trump's favourite Chinese steel). Once built, automated will make the stuff, so only a few brainiacs will be needed to program the bots... a few geeks will be needed to maintain/service said bots.

Did I leave anything out? Greetings from Canada, where a 15" MacBook TouchBar starts at $2700 (w/ tax, the price of a used car).

Yep,
1. Apple don't own any of the manufacturing plants (except one in Ireland)
2. ANY products made in the USA will be for US consumption only, the rest of the world will still be made in China and be cheaper
3. Trump won't be in office by the time the first product rolls off the production line
4. Hell the plants themselves may not even be started, it could take YEARS to negotiate the right spot to place it in.
5. After all this time, they have located the leak in the whitehouse, turns out it is Trump himself.
6.Trump thought Après Vous was "after 2, which equals 3.

Apple has been planning factories in the U.S. for a long time. Cook has been talking about it for years. That’s how large corporations operate. Strategic planning over many quarters. This didn’t just pop up over the past few months because the King Baby demanded it. Yet watch, mouth agape, as he tries to make it seem as though this was all his doing. “He’s promised ME three big plants—big, big, big!”

What a narcissistic fraud.

I'm not going to rant and rave about this like others. I'll just state something simple.

JOBS = JOBS And it's about time, Apple. Don't let the Trump Hysteria get in the way of doing something good regardless.

I have an issue of MacWorld back when Steve Jobs was bragging about the first state of the art U.S. Apple Macintosh manufacturing plant and giving tours of how high tech it was and all American jobs. Let's get back to that regardless of Trump hysteria.

And finally, this wouldn't be possible without Trump trying to go after companies hiding money abroad to not pay US taxes. The Europeans and Chinese are tough on this. It's about time the US is too. So for that 1 thing, I applaud Trump, that is, IF, he ever can do it against all the SWAMP lobbyists who are against this.

The fact that Apple is even willing to take this aggressive step against all political correctness is to be applauded.

Since most people I know hate Trump, this is my response. You don't have to change your opinion.
Just don't cut off a hand in order to save a finger.

Those American made Macs and iPhones are be the most faulty.
The build quality of the early made in the USA Macintosh models can be verified by how well they have stood up to the test of time.
There are many 15 even 20 year old macs still in service doing in many cases the same type of jobs they started at years ago.
I personally have two classic MacPro's each around 10 years old and operational in daily use.
Oh and BTW, both made in the USA.

Sorry, but I trust Chinese fingernails versus, I deserve a 15 min break every 10 minutes American assembly line. Those American made Macs and iPhones are be the most faulty.

Umm, there ARE no American made Macs or iPhones! HAHA! Oh maybe the poorly designed Mac Pro, but that has nothing to do with American workers. That's all the fault of Jonathan Ive.

Sounds like the products Apple already designs in CA and makes in China to me. So what is your real beef about Apple opening more U.S. factories?

I thought my reply to the original comment was pretty clear, but I'll try to explain it again. Not so much a "beef" as much as a prediction based on what the the poster I replied to said. Mac PRO (made in USA) = Overpriced and never updated. Other products soon to be made in USA in 3 new factories = Overpriced and never updated.

It was a prediction. No beef.

Of course no mention of the GATT treaty, which provided the funding to train said football fields full of vocationally skilled workers in China, much less where the funding for the GATT treaty came from. Does Tim think we have amnesia?

I'll want and see what Apple has to say about it, as they aren't known to be habitual exaggerators
Hahahahahahahah—oh wait, you meant that?

Listen, I love Apple, but its marketing copy can occasionally read like a new product is the second coming of Jesus Christ himself.

To be fair.... ALL presidents take credit when the economy is good and the job rate is high. And they all get the blame when it is not.

Reality is.... presidents have little to do with the economy. That’s Congress’ job.

That was back in the 80's, today, its gonna be Justine Bieber and Lady Gaga type folks on the assembly line.

Remember that Mac Pro facility in Austin several years ago? Uhm K.

I don't remember there being major defects in any of those Mac Pros. The design flaw that made people not want it was the problem, not the manufacturing.

Keep in mind though. Apple is not doing this out of patriotism per se. Their accountants have looked at the bottom line and found that if the tax situation here changes, it's a win-win all around to make more products here, since few of the other tech companies do either now. It's not like Tim Cook is co-opting any Trump agenda. He's just looking at Apple's bottom line and how to preserve it.

Hopefully unions can be the next thing to go. ;)
Yes and amen. Unions had their day, but greed took over and ruined what was once a good idea, which is why just about everything is being built, less expensively, someplace else - by people who are overworked and underpaid and yet, thankful to have jobs. And when it comes to training; please. I worked for Apple twice and their training was quick and precise and you were ready for prime time in less than a month.
