What are you talking about? It just defaults to 4G and life continues as normal.
If it allows the other SIM to work on LTE then the whole thing will be a non issue but somewhere I have read that provider asking the customer to forgo the secondary SIM card for 5G connectivity

My reading was that it’s simply 4G only on dual sim for a couple of weeks until the update is out.

Maybe I’m misunderstanding something?

Apple just told me in chat that the 5G sim limitation is software based and was a corporate management decision. I got impression that they don't want to overtax the 5G networks.

It’s really incredible that Apple thinks it’s OK to begin pre-orders (selling) without even mentioning this officially. At the very least they need to add an *Asterix* exclamation to the dual sim page

Sure 5G coverage isn’t amazing in most places but that’s no excuse for just leaving people who need dual sim out to dry without even so much as a warning.

I really can’t believe there are people in the previous thread who were (are) defending this. It’s about Apple not being honest with people spending tons of money on a new phone.
Perhaps you could head over to Google or Samsung and report back to us on how "honest" they are.

Stop overreacting, it will be fine and sorted in a matter of weeks

I would say Apple timing was very good considering preorders just went out a few days ago. Those who don't want the phone can cancel or return their phones. It's not like this news was discovered several weeks past the return period.

Most people who pre-ordered still aren't aware - not everyone follows these blogs. They still haven't updated their website to indicate this issue, in fact.

And "you can always return it" would, then, always be an excuse for false advertising.

It allows both sims to work on LTE. There's no such thing as a "5G-only" sim.

People are only overreacting as usual because it's Apple. It doesn't bother them, people just wanna hate on Apple just because. They would easily accept this had this been Samsung.
And being honest... I have doubts on some of them using dual sim in the first place... some like to complain for no reason.

5G is practically pointless in Canada anyways. We have such low data limits you would just end up hitting your limit, or throttle point, faster.

I'm a dual SIM user currently on my XS Max and will have it on my IP12 Pro Max as well...and couldn't care less about not having 5G for a few weeks.

I'm more looking forward to all of the threads at the end of this week when people start complaining how they aren't getting 2gig download speeds from their new 5G phone. :p

Similar boat. I don't really care about it if it's just for a few weeks (not real clear to me that we've gotten official answer?), especially since I am getting a pro max so by the time my device arrives it may be resolved, but, on the other hand, it is the sort of thing where if there is this limitation even for awhile, apple should have let buyers know ahead of time. People who pre-order tend to be apple's best customers, and you don't want them getting nasty surprises.

I doubt that this issue can be fixed perfectly by software update. If so, why even it can survive outside the library.

I’m quite disappointed at this (Tim showed 5G with big letters during the keynote presentation).

However I’m a tad bit glad: I was just about to upgrade my EE 4g plan (£7.50 per month) to a 5G plan (£25 per month).

That’s £17.5 saved each month until the software update comes. Cheers Tim: I’d buy you a pint but I’m upset at you 😒

Like, the only reason? 5G has been nothing but a disappointment based on all the reports from Android devices having 5G. 5G would be the last reason I would have to upgrade. What is your use case that makes 5G so desirable?
This is a good point LTE theoretical max is 2gb and in UK can get 200mb real world usage not sure 5G that useful yet

Well tell that same "logic" to BMW and Mercedes because they constantly have recalls. I know this for fact because I work in the automotive industry.

They should drop a few grand too.

Just because some companies mess up it does not give other companies a free pass to mess up, too. It's amazing how some people forgo logic and common sense just to defend a company.

This is why the trillions are well earned, not because of the products. Anyone can gather a team of skilled people and turn a good idea into a good product. If they can't get people to blindly defend it no matter what they will never gather enough momentum to achieve great success.

The theme of the event was 5G. It was called "Hi, Speed". Now the people that bought the iPhone and expected 5G are mocked that they fell for the hype.

It's also amazing how people dismiss other companies for NORMAL practices in order the trash Apple, who is ALSO doing normal practice. Pretty ridiculous on this forum as it happens daily.

What normal practice is that? How is normal practice to have your event focus on one major feature and the feature not to be available when people get their stuff? It's like a car company launches a model and emphasizes the comfort and smooth ride, delivers the car without shock absorbers and says that they will be installed at a later date. How is this normal?

Again, no common sense. Zero!

Nice whataboutism. Apple can do no wrong!
I don't know about Samsung, but when I looked at the Pixel 5, it had the same limitation. Which sucks.

I guess I'm more concerned about 5G roaming. I've read a few places that 5G roaming will require a LOCAL sim? If so, that will suck! But I suppose that is probably down to carrier agreements more than hardware. Anyone have any insights into this?

Normal practice for companies that make electronics is to put out products first and issue firmware updates later. I just spent $1000USD on my new Orbi Wifi6 system. Right out of the box the firmware needed upgrading. Odd because it's the latest model. I also checked with 3 other companies that offer wireless networking and every single one of them including the new Wifi6 LinkSys mesh router needed firmware updates right out of the box.

Brand new cars are constantly recalled. Your car analogy makes zero sense about the shock absorbers. 😂 It was so ridiculous my wife and I are still sitting here laughing at your post. It's not like Apple shipped the iPhone 12 without cellular antennas. That would be just as ridiculous as your car analogy. lol. The 5G feature is something very few people will even have access to. Drive 1 mile down the street and you'll be out of the 5G cellular range. Just because the news article is about Apple is the only reason you're arguing over nothing. Just to be clear, has this really affected your life?

I’m one of the 4% of people in the US using this feature. I can’t say I’m not disappointed. I do use this feature for a work phone and my main primary phone, so I don’t have to carry two phones. Looks like 5G will have to wait for me, as this feature is more important. I’ll still get a new phone to play with so I’ll still be content with that until 5G is turned on.

Apple introduce 5G as the new feature
and dual SIM as one of the features

And now Apple says those two feature cannot work together? That's amazing. If I use dual SIM then I lost the 5G network? "Future system update", but when? Apple should have this labeled explicitly on their official website in the technical specs.
