It’s really incredible that Apple thinks it’s OK to begin pre-orders (selling) without even mentioning this officially. At the very least they need to add an *Asterix* exclamation to the dual sim page

Normal practice for companies that make electronics is to put out products first and issue firmware updates later. I just spent $1000USD on my new Orbi Wifi6 system. Right out of the box the firmware needed upgrading. Odd because it's the latest model. I also checked with 3 other companies that offer wireless networking and every single one of them including the new Wifi6 LinkSys mesh router needed firmware updates right out of the box.

Brand new cars are constantly recalled. Your car analogy makes zero sense about the shock absorbers. 😂 It was so ridiculous my wife and I are still sitting here laughing at your post. It's not like Apple shipped the iPhone 12 without cellular antennas. That would be just as ridiculous as your car analogy. lol. The 5G feature is something very few people will even have access to. Drive 1 mile down the street and you'll be out of the 5G cellular range. Just because the news article is about Apple is the only reason you're arguing over nothing. Just to be clear, has this really affected your life?

It does not matter! What if I don't want to drive one mile down the street and I want to sit where where I have 5G signal? This is not an excuse. Mind boggling.

It affects my life because people like you are enablers of this sort of behavior. And it ends up affecting pretty much all aspects of my interaction with products. For you this is what normal looks like. Phones, cars, appliances. It's all normal for them not to work as advertised right out of the box.

I made a mistake by making the shock absorber analogy. OK! That's hardware and you needed a straw to hang on. Here is a software one. It's like a car company launches a model and emphasizes the infotainment system and delivers it without the software installed and says that it will be installed at a later date. VW did something somewhat similar now with the ID.3. Why? Because people like you think this is normal and they can get away with it. At least VW informed their customers ahead of the purcahse.

I was hoping that the idea that neither the car without shocks not the phone without 5G activated can be used as advertised would get through but it didn't. In the other thread there's a guy that thought Sydney was in the UK and kept mocking a Sydney resident complaining about the 5G thing so the bar is set pretty low.

So, the small minority of users with dual SIMs will not be able to use the 5G network immediately. In the interim, they will have to rely on the 4G network which, in most cases, is just as fast and sometimes even faster.

Let the overreaction begin.
As a member of the "small" minority of users with dual SIMs, this really should have been communicated more clearly. I was expecting 5G since it was advertised with no such caveat publicly. People make buying decisions on stuff like this. Kind of disappointed that this wasn't communicated on their website or even during the keynote.

Apple just told me in chat that the 5G sim limitation is software based and was a corporate management decision. I got impression that they don't want to overtax the 5G networks.

My cynical, snarky side says that if they don't want to overtax the 5G networks, don't hype them as much, trying to get more people to use them!

It's a small population that uses dual sim but this was obviously a known problem and to have it leak through some training materials seems to me to be a screw-up.

I'll still get the pro-max and hope that end of the year really means the end of the year but it's surprising the mindset was that this was just going to go unnoticed.

iPhone XS models and newer feature both a physical SIM slot and a digital eSIM, allowing for a feature known as dual SIM, dual standby. This means you can have two lines of service on one iPhone, which is useful for purchasing data-only plans while traveling abroad or having personal and business lines on a single iPhone.

5G will not be available in Dual SIM mode on the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro at launch, however, according to an internal training document for Apple employees shared on Reddit. MacRumors can confirm that the document is authentic.

From the document:According to an internal Verizon slide obtained by MacRumors, however, Apple plans to enable 5G support in Dual SIM mode with a software update later this year. In the meantime, Verizon says that eSIM customers must remove the physical SIM from their iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro to access its 5G network.

5G is automatically enabled on iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro models, as long as users have chosen a supported wireless carrier that offers a 5G network. To access 5G while roaming in other countries, Apple's document says that customers can purchase a local SIM card or eSIM plan and use it as a single line with 5G where available.

iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro pre-orders began last Friday, and shipments will begin arriving to customers this coming Friday. iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max will be available to pre-order starting Friday, November 6.

I have an Iphone 11 Plus Max with one regular SIM and an eSIM. Will ATTalso be offering the 5G service?

I’m surprised we haven’t ditched physical SIM’s yet. They take up a considerable volume inside a phone (that could be used for more battery). We have a perfectly functional ability to use eSIM’s instead. I’m sure Apple could move carriers to support this?

Im sure there would be savings in not having to produce and mail out SIM cards to customers.

Also I had a SIM card fail on me for the first time in my life this year - it was only about a year old too. So there’s that.

Yeah, “fix it later”. This is the world we are living right now. Don’t accept it? Then don’t get any tech.

People are so hyped about this 5G s..t it’s ridiculous. Faster speed sure, but then? iPhone 12 is destined to be 5G beta testing device from Apple anyways.
No, you can just wait until it's fixed. People here are antsy to pre-order an iPhone 12 as if it actually matters, so they test it out for you. What's wrong with that?

Turns out consumers happily beta test new features, even if they're useless. Best example: I've heard of corps that tried using smart home tech in the office. The conclusion was that smart home tech doesn't make anything faster or more convenient. Rather, consumers just like playing with shiny new stuff in their own homes.

Physical SIM is nice cause you know you can insert it into the phone and it'll work, and it's apparent on any phone how you do that. eSIM, I've never heard of and have no idea how to use.

The difference is, in those cases the updates were available out of the box. The routers don’t fail to include some advertised feature unless you wait for weeks or months until the firmware arrives.

I haven’t carried a house key in years. Seems smart home tech made my life more convenient.

Maybe you are hearing things.

You scan a QR code. It ain’t rocket science.

People are only overreacting as usual because it's Apple. It doesn't bother them, people just wanna hate on Apple just because. They would easily accept this had this been Samsung.

And as soon as the problem’s fixed, they’ll switch to complaining that 5G isn’t as fast as they thought or isn’t available in their area.

Still not a great analogy...you still got an infotainment system with the VW, just not one with the latest software update.

The phone still works...and again, let’s be serious here...how many of you single SIM users WON’T be posting Speedtest screen shots at the end of the week complaining about 5G speeds?

Until 5G becomes more widespread including wider band access, MOST of us will not experience the true benefit of it anyway.

I hope that’s not true, but people on here are being very nitpicky about this. Not buying the phone until 5G is available WEEKS from now seems so silly. #DramaQueens

Pretty sure you either scan a code or enter a code.
If you give me the choice of battery life or a physical SIM, I'll choose battery life every time.

Like, the only reason? 5G has been nothing but a disappointment based on all the reports from Android devices having 5G. 5G would be the last reason I would have to upgrade. What is your use case that makes 5G so desirable?
Given that people hold phones for longer, the 5G capabilities are a big selling point. That said, a delay of a few weeks on being able to access 5G when using dual SIMs is less important given the current state of 5G in most countries. Low-band 5G is available in broad parts of North America, Asia, and Australia, but mid- and higher-band 5G is not.

Wait for others to have the product first before you buy it if you really care about a particular feature. What if it has the feature day 1, but it's lame? Or don't buy from VW cause they suck and tried to cheat on emissions ratings.

Offices already have electronic keys, so I'm assuming it wasn't that. I remember they mentioned lights, coffee makers, and other food machines. Offices have other systems that aren't comparable to home ones, like security.

Offices already have occupancy sensors for turning lights on and off, coffee makers on, etc. too.

Your story is doubtful.
Where I work (undisclosed Fortune 500 company), there are simple occupancy sensors for lights. Enter room, lights stay on for 15min, manual button on wall too. Smart home lighting is more than that. Biggest difference is there's usually voice activation or app control.

The coffee machines are always on; not really sure if they're keeping water hot 24/7 or what. Again they aren't voice activated, scheduled, or app-controlled. Fanciest thing I've ever seen happen is the machine periodically expelling water to clean its foam dispensers.

Ok. So, yes, voice activation would have little use beyond that. So what’s your point?

Enablers vs disablers? You have options if you need 5g dual sim immediately, instead of waiting a few weeks.
