Hey Tim idea

Director - Paul green grass (Bourne ultimatum/captain Phillips)

Gritty docu drama series on suicides at Chinese factories. Mo Wing Tse can't take it any more, she puts all the iPhone parts in a nearby storage room, elaborate timer to remove the pins of 50 grenades, 'boom it's a screamer' she murmurs as she hurtles to her death, call it 'iSuicide' - 8 seasons?

Also Tim, you'd have to ask Paul if he doesn't mind editing it on iPhone 8 cos the Mac Pro is now 4-5 years out of date and doesn't have a built in raid like most normal desktop workstations.

Apple isn't two men in a garage any more. Don't you think that they are big enough to do both if they wanted to?
Apple is a huge behmoth of a company these days. The 'Spaceship' is evidence enough of that if nothing else.
Sure, I'd like a new iMac as I passed on the new MBP's but it is a 'like' not a must have or I'll throw my toys out of the pram and move to Windows (Shudder) sort of thing. We don't see the huse steps in system performance these days unlike we did 10 years ago so the race to have the latest and fastest system don't happen any more. As a result, it makes perfect sense to diversify into other areas.
Tim Cook has signalled that 'Services' are an area they are targetting. Making TV Shows falls into that area does it not?

Maybe... Westworld cost HBO $100M and Apple R&D spending is $2.5B in 2016. If Apple like to diversify their portfolio. I guess Apple can fit that in there somewhere in there. I still hope they spend more time on that MacBook Pro revamp.

Apple also might be planning to make shows exclusive to AppleTV to sell more devices... not sure if that's good for the long run, I already have too many TV box type devices in the living room...

From the rumors over the last couple of years it sounds like Apple has been trying to start it's own streaming cable/TV service, but haven't had any luck. It's complicated working with all the different broadcast and cable networks, and it's quickly becoming a crowded area, with new 'skinny bundles' coming out of the woodwork. At this point Apple would have trouble standing out so they might as well start creating their own content now and keep working on getting a cable/TV streaming service out the door. What Apple ultimately wants is to move hardware (in this case :apple:TVs) and if they create content that people like and want to see people will buy :apple:TVs in order to see it.

For everyone complaining that Apple should re-focus on MPs and MBPs, how long has it been since selling laptops and desktop has been the dominant source of Apple's revenue? Those days are long gone, and never coming back, because the customer buying habits have changed. Selling laptops and desktop is no longer the lucrative business it was 15yrs ago. The iPod and iPhone have been the big needle movers since then, but the iPod has gone away and the iPhone's growth is plateauing because the smart phone market is maturing. The iPad hasn't done gangbusters and neither has the Watch. So that leaves the :apple:TV and... some amazing product deep inside Apple that hasn't seen the light of day yet?

If Apple wants to change the :apple:TV from a hobby to a major focus then creating exclusive content is something they have to do. It's just the nature of that particular beast.

I agree with your points here about the complicated nature of dealing with the TV networks. I was more so saying this is what their goal should be. I am not sure working on original content with no platform is the clearest direction for Apple.

They already have a sales and rental platform though with iTMS so adding original content would just bring them more on par with Amazon, Netflix, HBO NOW, etc.,. I think they want to add cable/TV streaming to that, but they need original content regardless. It will help separate them from the pack as and give them some stability in their offerings (third party content comes and goes as old contracts expire and new ones are written).

This. Still waiting for ATV4 TV-app, Apple Pay, smarter Siri in Germany, lol.

Believe me the ATV4 TV-app is entirely useless for us in Germany, because there are no real streaming apps/services/providers available. Not even Sky or anything else.

In the US you have hulu, hbo, showtime abc, nbc, etc. therefore the TV app is just awesome and makes full sense.
With DirectTVnow you can even have up to 120 live TV channels streamed via ATV.

I would really like to pay up to 40€ per month if there would be similar services in DE - and don't come now with Amazon and/or Netflix. Not even the private TV channels like RTL, Pro7 have ATV Apps. That's really a shame here ...

You would have said exactly the same thing about the music industry 10 years ago if I'd said I want a subscription to th iTunes Music Store for £10/month, but we have that now, so it is possible.

Tricky, but possible and IMO inevitable.
No we don't have that now. You still can't stream every single song in iTunes. While it is a large catalogue that you can stream it's only a subset of the entire library.

I wasn't aware of this. Is there a comparison of libraries anywhere? Or a list of stuff that is on iTunes but isn't on AM?

Right. Anyway: I've started using MagineTV and it's great. Over 30 channels with RTL, Sat1 etc. included. And their App is also available on ATV. At the moment they have a special offer: 3 month for just 7€. :)

I don't know if there's a published list but all the streaming services work the same way. Some have more titles and some have less. But it's all based on licensing and contracts. That's also why there's music that gets removed from streaming or added at other times. Just like with movies or TV shows on iTunes. When licenses or contracts run out movie titles are removed. That's why you hear about stories people buying movies and then suddenly they become unavailable for download or streaming. Unless of course they were smart enough to download immediately after purchase.

I think that at some point, Apple is going to have to go with the Amazon model and bundle all their services together in a monthly subscription fee. Lots of people I know pay for Prime for reasons other than the streaming, but try it out (because why not? You're paying for it, right...) and find things they enjoy. The service is good - maybe not the best, and maybe not enough for the slow climb of becoming a major TV/movie source all by itself - but since there is value elsewhere in the deal, subscribers are generally happy.

Apple could already do that. Let's say they offered:
- 500GB iCloud storage (1TB = $9.99/mo, so let's pretend it would cost $4.99)
- Apple Music ($5.99/mo)
- 20% Appstore discount ($0.99 -> $0.79, $1.99 -> $1.59)

For $9.99/mo. That would be a decent deal, IMO (I'm being conservative, but it leaves room to fund more services)

There's only $11 of product there, plus the Appstore discount. In return, Apple up-sells all of their services. People who came in for some iCloud storage will walk away on the 500GB plan instead of the 50GB one, and as subscribers to Apple Music, etc. It's a recurring transaction too, so if you don't buy a lot of Apps in one month it was a totally pointless carrot to sell you AM.

Fair enough. Ok regarding the movie store I'd still be happy with 90+% of the library. Basically anything that's "more than Netflix" will get my money, as long as it's reasonably priced.
