That's not the same thing at all.

Apple is trying to create ANOTHER reason to stay in their ecosystem. This is exactly why Netflix has shows like Fuller House or 'Orange is the New Black'. This is exactly why Amazon buys exclusive rights to Mr. Robot, or has their own shows like 'The Man in the High Castle'.

For HBO to enter the smartphone/desktop/laptop business is laughable. It's not the same thing.

When you have a service, you (1) advertise it and (2) make it better than others (and one way is through exclusives)

Apple could open a line of whorehouses and you'd find a way to defend their honor.

Movies lose money?
Yes, most movies lose money, and not just by "fatal subtraction" accounting rules. It's not exactly a secret. Promoting a movie is very expensive and does not come out of the production budget. An awful lot of movies don't recoup. It's the blockbusters that keep the ink black. And that's why it's big news when a studio has a couple blockbuster fails in a row.

What do you even mean by this?

If you film at higher resolution than 4K (or your intended final output resolution) you can crop the image down in post processing without dropping below 4K resolution.

You'd do that if you need to adjust the framing of the shot for example, or you need to stabilise the shot (which trims a bit of video off the edges).

Once you've done that, if you've filmed in 8K you still have a full 4K resolution output image after you've done any cropping.

If you'd filmed in 4K and cropped the image your output file wouldn't be 4K anymore.

Hope that makes sense!

EDIT: Found this post which explains it a bit better :D

In his case, he's filming in 4K to crop down and end up with a 1080p output. Same thing as I was saying, just one level down.

Movies lose money? Only if you agree with the very crooked Hollywood accounting rules. Rules that I might add would never be allowed in any other business.
Even the biggest grossing Harry Potter Movie lost money according to Hollywood. Get real. IT made millions and millions.

Yes, most movies lose money. Hundreds get released just from Hollywood each year and only a few make big bucks like Harry Potter or Captain America: Civil War. Some break even, most lose money, and the studios hope the summer blockbusters make up the difference.

This is a big reason why there are so many remakes, sequels, prequels, extended universes, etc.,. because they are seen as less risky investments since they are working off of established brands/IPs. Many movies are also geared to be 'Chinese friendly' so they can be shown in China hopefully tap into that potentially huge revenue stream.

Yes, but HBO didn't take people from their video stream team and put them in charge of making Westworld. Likewise, Apple will not be putting the Mac Mini design team in charge of making tv shows. A lot of people here seem to think that Apple is a very small and poor company with just a few employees who have to multitask in order to get everything done. Apple producing tv shows will have almost no effect on people in their other departments.

Not sure why you quoted me, as your point has pretty much nothing to do with the one I was making.

Again, How would Apple buy an American company when they keep most of their money outside the United States to avoid paying taxes?

Easily. Like many mergers a simple stock swap would do the trick. Currently would be about ~1.25 shares of Time Warner for every share of Apple.

Another option would be financing through a mergers and acquisitions company like Goldman Sachs and leverage their overseas cash.

Why? If Apple will produce the new series then it's up to Apple to do whatever they want with it. I think it's the best opportunity to make solid good series and broadcast them using an app within Apple TV. If you can't or don't want to buy existing series make them yourself.

I think this is a good thing.

Cause ATV seems to be focused on US only rather than other countries.

I was expanding on what I thought Indiekiduk's point was in responding to you. It was only partially aimed at you.

On a slightly related subject, one of the reasons HBO has such great shows is that they do not have to cater to young audiences in order to get the all-important 18-49 demographics that advertisers care about. Showtime/Starz/Netflix/Amazon/Hulu/Apple/etc have this same freedom to create shows that appeal to the people paying them rather than shows that appeal to gullible people who only buy products with flashy ad campaigns. HBO has made some very good choices in picking their shows and they have the money to pay for quality. Most of these other companies have made some hit-or-miss choices and don't have the money to pay for big budget shows. Apple has the money, it remains to be seen if they know how to pick a winning show that appeals to the people willing to pay them to watch it. Having money certainly gives them more options and a better chance of getting quality actors/directors/etc.

This is the ad I see under this news:

But actually I'd love to see a good Apple show about future. It could be great for product placement and give Apple some ideas where to move with their own products.

Now, if Apple (with it's good relationship with Disney) could bring back "Agent Carter", I would pay for that.

never thought of this. it would be a big move and a smart one.
Buying Disney would offer Apple customers no benefit. How would it benefit Apple?
If the premise is that you'd have to buy an iPad to watch Star Wars, I think that would be kind of a downer.

I do not defend Apple when they do stupid things. Why would you think such a thing?

Apple is simply creating exclusives, like all their competitors do. How does that compare to opening whorehouses?

Apple should build an actual Westworld instead.

That would suck.
  • The hosts would only run for the entire day if they sit around in rocking chairs talking. The gunslingers and whores would run down four hours into the story-line.
  • If you didn't like the prostitutes, Apple would say you were "screwing them wrong".
  • The hosts' conversation skills would be far below that of the hosts in Google's Mideval world.
  • The landscape would be a barren pure desert like the Bonneville Salt Flats, can't have too much color.
  • A Whiskey would be $5 even though the world runs in 1860's currency valuations.

I was bored to tears with the first episode. 72 minutes of my life lost. Couldn't bring myself to watch episode 2.

It's a very good looking and well acted show. Storywise, it's a bit of a mess.

HBO is certainly targeting demographics, especially those that fall between 18-49.

The seeming freedom from semantics boggles the mind. To watch a TV show you'd go to iTunes which contains Apple Music which contains TV shows (not to be confused with the section of iTunes that is already called TV shows or the iOS app called TV or the product called Apple TV)?

Wait, don't i have to go to 'my computer' to start playing my music?

( agreed - messy system - very un-apple-like. :( )

If they could find a way to continue James Parriott's Defying Gravity, that's all I'd need. Still the best tv ever and cancelled so sadly. Plus they could show off all manner of Apple future tech ideas. Passengers was a future tech geek out, and was amazing for it. Even a series out of that would rock. Put the spaceship campus to spaceship use!
