I was prepared to drop $6k on a new Macbook Pro tomorrow. If there is a notch, they have lost my sale. I don't need to spend that kind of money on something that will piss me off every time I look at it. The only vote I have in Apple's design/products is via my wallet so here it is. I'm casting my ballot.

This is one of the reasons I kept my old iPhone. I hate the notch. Totally unacceptable to me. Too bad too because I was really excited to see the touchbar go away. I'll be more excited to eventually see this notch crap go away across the board for good. We don't NEED to get rid of the bezels. That just makes these laptops less durable. I fail to see the point behind it all.

In reviewing the hacked CAD drawings posted on Twitter, I can see the supposed notch. But here's the deal: the notch is the component for the camera — meaning it's the inner shell of the display minus the LCD panel & backlighting components. It shows the ribbon cable for the camera routed behind the LCD backlight down to the hinge where it connects with the main logic board.

If you look at the same FaceTime camera component on other MacBooks, like 2012-2015 models, this component looks similar in dimension, right down to the comparative ribbon width to the camera component width. As shown from this iFix it retina display teardown:

Thus the actual cover glass has the black bezel we're familiar is applied during the final bonding process during production.

I see nothing in the leaked CAD drawings that they're taking the LCD all the way up to the rubber gasket that bridges the cover glass with the aluminum frame. Most importantly, knowing what we know about mini LED displays & how they needed to slightly increase the thickness of the 12.9" iPad to accommodate them — I don't see how they're going to do that near the edge of the display where the LCD would meet that supposed rubber gasket.

Something to keep in mind!

YEARS of people complaining here about Jony Ives and his quest for thinner thinner thinner. People moaning about it. Now, some rumor-monger says it'll be thicker and heavier and, YES, cue up the complaints. Meaning there is NOTHING that Apple can do that will satisfy some people.
the ones complaining about thinness aren't the same ones complaining about thick and heavy. completely separate groups.

„Very thick and heavy.“

I sure hope there‘s a reason for that. Why would they make it thick and heavy now that the ARM CPU‘s don‘t need a thick body anymore?

If they can put everything into an iPad Pro plus screen I wonder what went wrong with the MBP.

Oh and that damn notch, please don‘t say it‘s true.

How do they solve the backstopping issue? The most fundamental design aspect of the Mac is that the mouse cannot overshoot the menubar. You can't just put an extra row of stuff above it, unless it's inaccessible to the mouse.
First thing I thought of was they’re going to move the Touch Bar features into it…

As for the notch on the display, I fully suspect most apps will just work but a bunch of full screen apps like games wont know that the notch isn't usable space and that area is often where games will put a menu or resource counter.
I feel like a notch doesn't make sense on a Mac with menu bar. A notch in the middle of my menu bar would block at lear 1-2 icons up there or potentially the "Help" menu of some apps with lots of menu options.

you lose a flat border which ive been used to since my very first laptop. there is no way in h3ll i will suffer another apple product with a stupid notch.
In Dark mode would you even see it? Is the menu bar black in dark mode?

"using a touch SCREEN holding your arms up on a laptop is bad, you shouldn't do it, and Windows is silly for doing so. Also, here's our on-screen touch BAR, it's a wonderful ergonomic solution".

"Knight Boat, the crime SOLVING boat!"

I hate notch

It’s bearable when the OS and apps have ways to work with it(menu/status bar designed with notch in mind), but when I view my photos and other illustrations, or read PDF/ebook in 2 page spread (all those are important to ME) in full screen mode that freaking notch is much worse than thicker bezel

Apps designed with the notch in mind probably gonna give Pro Display XDR a notch

You will still know it is there. It will still nag at you. Just like this song will nag you all day "It's the final countdown..." Enjoy.
Well, my current MacBook Pro, whose lid has not been opened in months, has a touch bar that I barely ever think about. And I thought the touch bar was well implemented.

And I already have Europe in my iTunes 80's playlist. (I remember when "The Final Countdown" was brand new.)

If anything nags me it will be all the non USB-C ports that are rumored to be added back to the MacBook Pro.

I welcome back the SD Card, magsafe, and HDMI. Bravo!

Now bring the headphone jack back on the iPhone and I would be ecstatic!

If rumors are true, the max configuration here is 32GB/4TB.
Currently I have a 64/8TB configured 2019 MBP.
Does Apple seriously expect me to downgrade to a "notched" machine with half the capability, using a ramped up smartphone chip that is hardly an industry standard?
As consolation, they are brining back MagSafe, which they never should have removed.

Excitement about mini-LED? My Thinkpad 40g has touchscreen retina OLED... USB ports..I had always preferred my MBP, but not sure I can justify buying the new model which has worse specs than the thinkpad.

Hopefully these rumors are false, but it seems the company is not the "Old Apple" I knew.

they have to leave faceid for next release :) if they put all things into new device how will they sell next one?

I’m getting an intuitive feeling that these are going to be expensive.
I predict baseline MacBook Pro 14” will be $2500, with the maxed out config hitting $5000 if not even higher, matching and exceeding the price of current intel Mac. I would not be surprised to see a $10000 MacBook Pro with 4TB storage and 32GB of RAM just like typical Apple fashion.

I’d have been okay with a notch if it housed Face ID but considering this isn’t there, then what’s the point?

I'm starting to have the feeling that the pixels at the notch level will remain black almost always, except for rare occasions when some sort of indicator is shown.

Getting rid of the emoji bar would be a huge step "forward," but a notch would be doubling down on a stupid idea that has already been mocked for years.

Yep... sounds like something Apple would do.

Be confident. Starting price of 16GB/512GB would be $2799.
Absolutely hilarious. You seriously think they’re going to hike the price $1000 just like that? Can you imagine how moronic that would be? Or maybe you’ve got a few screws loose, eh.

There was a rumour that miniLED (+ inflation?) would lead to a price increase, which I can see, but $100 is most likely. Maaaybe $200 at most.

Under bean counter Tim apple, I don’t see it as improbable, especially there’s a couple dozen forum members on these threads vowing to get one no matter the cost. YouTubers are going to get one too, so apple really can just charge whatever they want.
