You get more screen space everywhere except a small notch. That's a win... I don't see how people have a problem with having more screen space if it comes at the cost of a single little notch.
How do you get more space though? If you black out the left and right of the notch and use it for indicators like date, time, battery, bluetooth, wifi, etc. you are still going to have the menu bar sitting below it and the menu bar can already fit those indicators as it is. All signs point to the top bezel being about the size of the side bezels on the current 16" model which in no way would require a notch. It's small but it's not that small. If Dell can do it Apple sure as hell should be able to but no, it must have a notch and not even have facial recognition.

interesting. I was thinking the notch would line up with the Menu Bar. So MacOS would sort of embrace it well. Wallpaper would only be a factor on the lock/login screen.

3D / DCC (Blender / DaVinci Resolve)...? Plus the fact that it is not upgradable, so (IMHO) RAM & GPU should be maxed out...?
Thank You. So I’d imagine that it’s the number of textures and models that need to be held in memory? Most of my work has been in DBs virtualization and text processing. So memory is factor but often it’s memory latency and disk latency that are the bigger factors. In many use cases it’s impossible to keep a full data set in memory. So we focus on reducing datasets and streamlining the pipeline.

But I know next to nothing about 3D design and modeling, But I’m always curious about other use cases,.

"very thick, thick and heavy." makes it an immediate no-go for me. Waiting for the 2022 Air instead while enjoying my fanless more-than-fast-enough M1 Air.

64GB RAM for me plz & thx...! ;^p

What use case do you have for 64GB. I’m really curious.

There is also the rumor that the 32-core GPU SKUs will be tied to 64GB of RAM, with the 16-core GPU SKUs having 16GB or 32GB RAM options; so for maximum GPU power, one would need to go with maximum RAM..?

Max could mean max everything it sounds like.

would anyone actually buy a macbook with a notch? no chance here. i would switch to chromebook before I did that.

Way better on MacOS than iOS, as you lose nothing by putting it there.
you lose a flat border which ive been used to since my very first laptop. there is no way in h3ll i will suffer another apple product with a stupid notch.

Doubt.
They finally got rid of the touchbar, fixed the function keys and in return introduce something on screen that cuts the toolbar in half? Apple loves to self-sabotage and call it courage, but I can't imagine they're this stupid.

Interesting how passionate people are about the notch. My brain must be wired differently I really don’t feel anything one way or the other. I am very excited to learn about the chip. Can’t wait until tomorrow and hope that preorders start a few days after so I can spend some time thinking about the purchase.

I guess people expect more from Apple than sticking a notch in a display and charging premium prices.

So this rumor is basically saying that the M1 die is a chiplet design, and the new MBPs can be configured with two or four chiplets. I.e. An "M1X" is actually just TWO or FOUR M1s with interconnect.

It absolutely makes sense that a laptop with FOUR M1s in it would need significant cooling.

If true, this thing is going to be a beast.

The "bezel" thing I think he actually means "bevel", as in the beveled edges of the aluminum; the shape of the enclosure.

I'm not quite sure how to reconcile this with the "10 core, 8 performance, two efficiency" rumors, but honestly, this sounds much more like a true Pro machine than the previous rumor. Maybe that's the chiplet design for the M2? i.e. "M1" is one 8-core (4+4) chiplet, M1X is two or four M1 chiplets, "M2" is one 10-core (8+2) chiplet, M2X is two or four M2 chiplets.

This honestly makes a lot of sense given how silicon is done today, and the fact that they'll need to put this in a Mac Pro eventually (8 chiplets??).

If the M1X variants reuse exactly the same silicon as M1, they can disable cores to constrain thermal (performance) output.

I'm not sure how many neural processing cores are rumored to be in whatever they announce tomorrow, so not taking that into account…

F = firestorm performance core / I = icestorm efficiency core / G = graphics core

If each set of parentheses is a chip, then an M1X Max, with 8 firestorm, 2 icestorm, and 32 graphics cores would look like

(2F + 8G) + (2F + 1I + 8G) + (2F + 8G) + (2F + 1I + 8G)

And an M1X Pro would be

(4F + 1I + 8G) + (4F + 1I + 8G)

I'm sure Apple will gladly pass along the savings of using the same silicon.
