I wonder how they will spin this in 2025 after this debacle..

Now with Apple Super Intelligence?
Now with Real Apple Intelligence?
Now really cross-my-heart-and-hope-to-die with Apple Intelligence?

I wouldn't rule out the "Apple Intelligence" umbrella will disappear entirely to put an end to this confusing mess, they could focus on the functionalities as they are introduced - New Siri, Smart (whatever), etc.
Apple AI is now fully ingrated at the core level of the OS.

What about Apple over-promising and under-delivering. They showed a video of features that the software team did not even have in concept. They used that video to sell the new iPhone. They are clearly not trustworthy anymore. I don't see why this is not relevant to Apple customers.

No worries, mate. Simply turn it off like most people who have been repeating that for months. If you feel Apple isn't trustworthy anymore, the good news is there are many other mobile phones available.

Can you point to a credible article that Apple systems engineers did not even have an AI concept? Thanks.

What a fiasco. No one was asking for this and would have been fine waiting for when Apple declared that it was ready. Apple had a good reputation for waiting until the technology was ready. Especially as Siri's only notable purpose has been as an annoyance when people accidentally invoke it, but no one was clamoring for it to go through our email. God no. I'd much rather have a choice of third-party AI be a default and wait for when LLM's or other AI technology is truly ready to co-mingle with the system or personal data. As much as I use and love LLM's for their amazing technology, I still feel it's not ready and should be sandboxed with barbed wire

I'm sure that Apple is confident. But so were they a year ago when preparing the presentation of Apple AI 😜. I prefer they release a good product. All those Google AI 'tricks' are fun and all, but besides having fun with generating silly images I haven't experienced a must have application of these AI wannabes

I posted this yesterday, but I feel like it seriously needs constant reposting and reposting with all of the “Steve would never” talk…
Anyone who seriously thinks “Steve would never” needs to watch this video. Then watch it again. And again.
Steve said, with a completely straight face, that the initial version of Mac OS X (Chita) would be preinstalled on all new Mac computers by January 2001, and that it would ship an early 2000, which later got delayed until summer 2000.
By January 2001, not only was Mac OS X cheetah not the default OS on any new computers, but… It hadn’t even shipped yet.
And this was all delayed from his original timetable. And by the way, he never came out and said it was delayed, he just changed the timetable at each event and hoped no one would notice.
Chita didn’t end up shipping until March 24, 2001, over a year behind schedule.
And the launch was so disastrous, that they ended up having to ship the second version, puma, just six months later.
Mac OS X would not become the default Mac operating system until January 2002, and even by then they were still shipping with Mac OS 9also installed, because there was still so little confidence in it.

Oh, you want more? Let’s talk about leopard.
Steve said with a straight face in June 2005, that it would ship in late 2006 right around the same time as what was then called “Longhorn”.
The following year this was pushed back to spring 2007, and on April 11, 2007, it was delayed a third time to October 2007. And they actually gave a reason for it, you know why? Because “iPhone development”.
So yeah, anyone who seriously thinks “Steve would never”… not only would he, but he also did.
And this isn’t even to mention the white iPhone 4 fiasco, said it would ship in July 2010, didn’t ship until April 2011.

All of this is fake drama to get clicks. When it is ready, it will be released. I am expecting to be fully integrated into the OS in 19, which was most likely their plan from the start until someone at Apple made them move up the deadline and by doing so, screwed up their roadmap.

It’s not relevant to any customers because we literally have no evidence that that is true.
We have some disgruntled employees saying that *they* never saw the features, but when you understand how Apple software development works, that means nothing. Almost none of their developers see fully finished things before they launch, because of the insane secrecy and security.
Even before the original iPhone launched, no one at AT&T had ever seen the phone. The majority of people working on its operating system, had never seen the phone.
In fact, we do have a report about it on all hands-on meeting with one of the Siri leads where he apparently demonstrates the features several times and says they have about an 80% accuracy rate.
So as an Apple customer, that’s why it’s not relevant to me. We have conflicting things coming from conflicting groups, all being filtered through the lens of newspapers and journalists that have their own agenda.
Half of apples employees are saying they never saw these features, the other half are saying it has an 80% accuracy rate and that it’s been in development this entire time, and anyone believing either of these groups completely is only getting half (or likely even less) of the story.

Apple plans to release its delayed Apple Intelligence Siri features in the fall, according to a new report by The New York Times.

iOS-18-Siri-Personal-Context.jpg

In early March, Apple said that it was going to take longer than expected to roll out the more personalized ‌Siri‌ experience, and that these features would be rolled out "in the coming year." Subsequently, Reuters reported that the ‌Apple Intelligence‌ ‌Siri‌ features have been delayed until 2026.

However, NYT reports today that its sources within Apple are still confident of a fall release. From the report:

The ‌Siri‌ features in question were demonstrated at WWDC when introducing ‌iOS 18‌, and they were expected to come out in an update to ‌iOS 18‌. The functionality includes personal context, onscreen awareness, and improved app integration. Here's a quick summary:
Personal Context

Siri will be able to track emails, messages, files, photos, and more – learning from your interactions to help you stay organized and complete tasks.
  • Show me the files Sam sent me last week.
  • Find the email where Sam mentioned ice hockey.
  • Find the books Sam recommended to me.
  • Where's the recipe Sam sent me?
  • What's my passport number?
Onscreen Awareness

Siri will understand what's on your screen and act on it. For example, if someone texts you an address, you can ask Siri to add it to their contact card. Or, if you're viewing a photo, you can ask Siri to send it.

Deeper App Integration

Siri will handle more complex tasks across apps – things it currently can't do. Apple shared a few examples of what to expect:
  • Move files between apps.
  • Edit a photo and send it.
  • Get directions home and share the ETA with Sam.
  • Send the draft email to Sam.
Already, Siri has gained Type to Siri, a refreshed interface, ChatGPT integration, and improved natural language understanding.

Apple demonstrated many of the above missing Siri features in WWDC previews, and went on to advertise them on its website. It also promoted them in a since-pulled TV ad for iPhone 16 starring actor Bella Ramsey, as well as elsewhere. Apple has been sued at least three times over the delayed Siri features in California.

There has perhaps never been a more appropriate reason to use the phrase “I’ll believe it when I see it “. 🤣

You mean other than the features being introduced during WWDC 2024’s presentation of iOS 18?
I didn't see that presentation or read much after the event. Those are obviously features on the horizon and were obviously not included with the initial launch of ios 18, so did they come right out and say which version of ios they would come with or when?

Excellent synopsis. And very enlightening. Thank you.

People have short memories.
Short memories, plus the “ grass is always greener” effect.
We see the exact same thing when people talk about bugs. The idea that Apple’s operating systems are more buggy than they have ever been. Which is just… Verifiably untrue.
I always laugh when people say that there should be another snow leopard. You mean, another update that accidentally ends up erasing peoples entire home folders for the first two versions of its release? No thank you.

The craziest aspect of these leaks is not realizing that AI chatbots are slowly eroding Google’s search monopoly. Apple is on the verge of losing its Google traffic acquisition revenue because of the antitrust case so you would think that Apple would develop a chatbot to try to dominate this next phase of search. Early Siri had a chatbot vibe by displaying its answers on screen. The launch of the HomePod made Siri more of a pure voice assistant. Apple being Apple, it still has time to pivot but do the AI executives there still doubt the use of AI chatbots for searches?

I don’t understand why people are name calling those who are upset about the delay. The demoed features were used to sell the iPhone 16 pro. While I don’t believe in buying a device due to promised future upgrades, I do believe it is a deceptive practice that Apple has been doing for a while. They should not be allowed to get away with that and those of you who sympathize with Apple, you must not have much regard for integrity.

Did you actually watch the WWDC 24? Apple clearly stated that they were concept features when they demoed them. Apple never said that the advanced Siri features would be released as part of 18.4, that was just MacRumors and other apple fan sites that just assumed that was going to be the case.

Apple stated that the advanced AI features would be released sometime in 2025 at WWDC 24, so technically if Apple does release them before the end of this year they will never have lied about anything. It has nothing to do with integrity. It has to do with Apple not wanting to release software that doesn't function like it was intended. To me that is more integral than just releasing some garbage and hoping that most people don't notice that your product doesn't work.

^^^ This. How about the original iPhone demo that was so unstable, Jobs had to follow a very specific set of actions on the device to ensure it didn't crash out during the unveiling? A lot of companies overpromise at unveiling and hope to catch up by the time the device needs to ship. When it works out like with the iPhone, Jobs' confidence becomes the stuff of folk legend. When it falls short, like with Apple Intelligence, you get the bad press and embarrassment. But you can't argue this type of behavior hasn't always been baked into the Apple ethos since Jobs' reign.
