Apple, please switch to 22nm and 4" Super AMOLED Plus Already

I agree that apple is changing their business model and by doing so has purposely trapped a bunch of us into their ecosystem.

How? Well they used to release products that were ahead of everyoen else, yes they cost more, but they were more advanced and better in all ways. So since they kept doing this over and over it felt as if they would keep on the bleeding edge.

So we all spent a bunch of moneys buying apps and other junk that we felt we would keep because the next apple product will always be more advanced, yes and more expensive, but it was worth the expense because it was ahead of the pack.

Now today apple has changed models, they now release ho hum products that are only barley keeping up with the rest of the market. But are still expensive, so they are just milking their cash cow now.

As soon as ATT has a 720P smartphone my 64 gig 4s is on craigslist. :)

Took the words right out of my mouth. I don't know how many time I've read: "I'd get an Android or a Windows phone, but I'm too heavily invested in iPhone apps".

Right now, Apple is riding on past glories. They can still bring it back home with a redesigned iPhone 5 though.

Totally agree with OP. The iPhone4S was an insult to release. At the end if the day its last years phone re-released. Same exact size...same screen...still a bunch of app icons on the screen, looks like from 2007...worse battery life than last years phone...still 3G only...

I was truly expecting the iPhone5, with 4"+ screen, AMOLED, revised OS style, thinner, with much better battery life. Oh well...that's why I only buy the "Nexus" line of phones the last few years, I stopped buy iPhone's when I saw it being the same device year after year.

Let's hope for a redesigned 6th generation iPhone (iPhone 4S = 5th iPhone) with a bigger screen.

Hopefully Apple will decide to double the resolution again because a 4" 960*640 screen has a pixel density of 288 ppi. That's well below iPhone 4's 326 ppi and well below the 'magical border' of 300 ppi.

So let's hope that if Apple goes for a bigger screen, they will also go for double the resolution: 1920 * 1280. That's Full HD! At 4", that's a pixel density of 577 ppi. At 4.3" 537 ppi and at 4.5" 513 ppi. It's a bit high, but who knows... if Apple manages to innovate... :)

That will be innovative.

Let's hope Apple will innovate in 2012. I seriously believe that the small upgrades (iPad 1 to iPad 2 and iPhone 4 to iPhone 4S), were because of Steve Jobs' illness. You saw the same thing in 2009 when Jobs' was also with medical leave.

Apple will do well if they do this in 2012:
- Redesign of iOS with iOS 6 (so a fresh, new look)
- Redesign of the next generation iPhone (6th. gen)
- 6th gen iPhone must have: bigger screen, 4G support, redesign, running iOS 6
- iPad 3 must have retina display and must get the iOS 6 upgrade for free

Really, a fresh, new look with iOS 6 would do wonders. A redesigned iPhone with a bigger screen, 4G support and A6 chip would do good as well. An iPad with such a high resolution would be awesome.

If the iPad 3 is going to be a simple upgade from the iPad 2, and the 6th gen iPhone will also be more of the same only than Apple will be trailing behind. I believe 2012 is going to show us what Apple is planning for the future: new innovative features, or just 'keeping up'?

Of course you would think that, you already bought the iPhone and are psychologically motivated to support your buying decision.

Find me even one single unbiased reviewer that says that IPS is better than Super AMOLED at the same resolution.

Every comparison says the Super AMOLED displays blows all other displays away, and this is even at a lower resolution. A Super AMOLED display at 960x640 would be absolutely stunning.

There isn't a single Andriod phone running Ice Cream Sandwich with comparable hardware to the 4s that the iPhone 4s outperforms.

3.5" was fine when basically all smartphones were 3.5" or less because display tech wasn't cheap enough back then. But phones have moved past that size in the past year, and apple is lagging behind everyone else.

And I never once said that Apple should switch to Intel.

What I said was that Apple should take a page out of Intel and invest their money into shrinking the die size of the ARM chips that they are producing so that they can release more powerful ARM chips that get better battery life as well, due to being built on 22nm rather than 45nm.

Intel sunk some money into shrinking the diesize and moved past 45nms several years ago. Now they are going down to 18nm.

Why can't apple sink some of it's cash into shrink the diesize of their ARM chips as well.

Lol you said that the "AMOLED" display is 960x640. The retina display already is 960x640.

If your expected apple to throw the entire GUI out the window your probably going to be disappointed. It sounds like your envious of ice cream sandwich. As for AMOLED the Retina display is better now unless you want icons and text to look horrible.

And as for LTE it makes sense not to release an iPhone with it for 2 Reasons.

1) The battery life is horrible for LTE phones and apple isn't going to release an iPhone that manages to get only 4 hours of battery life. If you go to the verge and other sites that tested phones like the Droid Razr the battery life is terrible even on the brand new Rezound.

2) LTE isn't widespread enough it makes no sense to release an LTE iPhone when Only Verizon users and a few users in select AT&T markets can take advantage of it.

I've been monitoring my usage closely. The phone dies after 4.5 hrs of usage, every single time.

Took it to the Apple Store and they ran various tests said that the phone and battery is perfectly normal and 4.5 hrs is about what everyone is gettingg=.

As far as I'm concerned, 4.5 hrs is way too short, and apple should invest some of their massive capital into increasing that number (by shrinking the chips to 22nm and going 4" Super AMOLED Plus) .

Andriods have crappy software (in terms of efficiency and battery life) combined with good hardware (in some phones). Ice Cream Sandwich is supposed to be an improvement in that regard.

ICS is not an improvement. It's still a beta! It's basically the same as 2.3 but with some new features that's it. BTW Android copied iOS (Wifi Sync, speech-to-text)

I just don't understand why all the folks insisting that Apple is now lagging so far behind aren't jumping on other platforms? If an Android phone has all the features you want, then isn't *that* the phone you want?

Apple isn't lagging behind anyone. The 4S is every inch as good as any phone being released. Android vs iOS simply comes down to which ecosystem you're more comfortable with. The phones all do virtually the same stuff, they just go about doing them differently.

I agree. People seem to think if apple loses marketshare thats a bad thing. I don't think it is. Ford Sells more cars than BMW and Porsche for example. I think eventually what it's gonna come down to is if you want a more hackable lets throw in all but the kitchen sink then you would go to android and if you want a more refined polished experience then you would go to iOS.

Interesting. Josh Topolsky at the Verge is a reviewer of tech and it's no secret that he likes the iPhone. However, he also said that the Galaxy Nexus + Ice Cream Sandwich was the first Android phone to match or surpass the iPhone + iOS in terms of OS quality and user experience/usability. Maybe you can get the polished experience AND the kitchen sink after all...

Unless, by "refined" you mean less options and control?

From what i've seen of the ICS i don't like it. For me it looks cluttered and i don't like that. I'm into very minimalistic things. It may sound nerdy but that's what i base my purchases on. Everything from my TV to my headphones are all simple but powerful things.

I don't agree with that and actually hate apple for doing this. How about give users the choice. If you don't like LTE, keep it off and don't use it. If its not in your area turn it off. Why is it that since "typical iphone" users don't have wide access to LTE on every network does apple have to penalize other users that do have and want to use it?

I have to say I recently switched from Nexus S to Iphone 4S on sprint and 3g is horrid compared to what I had when 4G was on. But you see with Nexus S its a matter of flipping the switch and using it. This battery nonsense is getting old too. My Nexus S lasted for 24 hours of my usage without me disabling 4g. yes Iphone lasts longer but not by much and I have no issues with charging my phones every night.

They need to stop with this majority rules act. Give their users choices and let them decide what they want to do.

Really? That facepalm picture really does apply to your comment. Damn

Well you know what if don't like the fact that apple is anal about having its ducks in a row then stick with android. I think it makes sense to wait until LTE chips are mature enough to the point of having good battery life.

It sounds like you had the Nexus S which was 4G wi-max. I think its good that apple doesn't want to rush crap to production.

He doesn't WANT to do something silly like research. He wants to have someone validate his opinion that he knows more about iPhone users than Apple does, and has the answer for all of Apple's "problems."

If he actually wanted to share his opinions with Apple, he would've emailed Tim cook, or used the feedback form:

LOL....Really? iOS didnt copy anything from Android? Sometimes its best not to say anything about who is copying who. And yes, i mean even Steve Jobs in his past declarations of copying somebody.

Oh and yes, ICS is a big improvevment.

I get 7-8 hours on my 4S. And it's still not at 30% by then. The only thing the world doesn't need is more idiots not knowing where they're going when driving. And OLED isn't that great of a technology.

Lol sounds like quite the party! The ladies must have totally digged the counting-of-phones portion of the evening! Was it a Sesame Street themed party?

Lol,it was a strange party thats for sure, but we got smashed and laid

Well, my hopes are up for the next-generation iPhone in 2012. If they truely are going to put in a LTE chipset in the next-generation iPhone, than they would somehow need to save some battery life. Of course a redesign with bigger casing would help, but I expect that there will be other improvements as well so the battery might stay the same.

They can save a lot of battery life when using Super AMOLED Plus, and perhaps by that time (June-October timeframe), Super AMOLED Plus 2.

OP is like a guy who is dating a cheerleader but wants her to instead play tennis. Dude, she doesnt love you. Find another girl.

Personally, I'm awaiting the Samsung Galaxy S3.
Quad-core, big screen, AMOLED+ etc and LTE.

Apple Iphone 5 will probably have quad-core as well though.
