im betting similar discounts this year. if you want deals on apple products the only place to go is their refurb section or an outside retailer for new.

My bet is that this time they're going to include the iPhone 5C to try to pump up sales on this device.

They should have done a no sales tax event.

That's not really up to Apple, since it's the states (or state plus local entity) that mandate the sales tax. They have to pay it unless the state has any sales-tax holidays as some do in late July or early August when back-to-school shopping peaks. The best Apple could do is adjust their price to offset the sales tax, which they'd have to calculate differently in most states and most locations, and even then in many locations they'd have to advertise the adjusted price since many (but not all) forbid advertisement of "tax-included" prices (and the ones that don't usually require you to clearly state that it is included).

-----

that $101 off on the macbook pro, apply with the EDU so, on the base 15 inch model:

$1,899 (EDU PRICE) - $101 = TOTAL $1798 :D

works???

That won't work. The discounts Apple has on Black Friday are applied (automatically, including in the advertised price) to the prices on the affected items in the general/public store. As far as I can remember, the Education Store has never received its own Black Friday discounts. You've never been able to "stack" the discounts since the discount was just a temporary price reduction in the store itself, not, for example, a code you type in at checkout. Of course, they could be doing this differently this year--I just wouldn't count on it.

-----

In related news, anyone get an e-mail about Apple's Black Friday even this morning? I do, and it even says things like that the prices are only valid on this day--but then neither the e-mail nor the link says anything about the actual prices or discounts. I was hoping they'd be revealed soon.

Does anybody look at the other side (i.e. manufacturer) and the problems discounts pose.

Plenty of reasons not to offer discounts:

If everything sells without , why have discounts?

If the discount is too high retail partners get upset, as you are now competing with them as the manufacturer.

If you always significantly (Apple is not ) discount around a certain time of year
consumers will outwait you and only buy around discount/sales times.

Discounts are usually given to move old product, increase sales numbers etc. etc.

There are more, but let's just say Apple feels compelled to give "token" discounts,
which btw in their case go directly against the bottom line (Yeah , yeah they have it, still not a reason)

While we chuckle at free shipping, it's worth money and while we may think their discounts don't amount to much, again, it's money you don't have to spend.

Apple will sell with or without discount, so don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

If anything, I'd prefer FREE Apple Care. That doesn't cost them much given the longevity of their products and may in the along run entice users to always buy Apple Care

That's an awesome idea, the free Applecare. I would take that in a heartbeat over discounted hardware.

Because spending more money and walking into a store with the :apple: on it makes you "classy?"

:apple::apple::apple: < There, I'm classy now! :roll eyes:

Nope.

My comment had nothing to do with "walking into a store with the :apple: on it" or about what makes a person classy.

I was responding to someone who said that Apple looked "cheap", and should aspire to be more like Walmart. That's pretty ridiculous, since Walmart is pretty much the cultural definition of "cheap". (i.e.: if Apple were more like Wal-mart, wouldn't that make them MORE cheap, not less?)

Get it now?

Sigh.

You just like to argue, don't you?

One of the good points of the Apple deals is that they won't sell out and everyone gets the same deal. That doesn't mean Apple is better. One of the good points of the Best Buy deals is that they're marked off more. That doesn't mean Best Buy is better.

You ARE allowed to say good and bad things about each. You don't have to be a complete fanboy of Apple or Best Buy.

I'm not a fanboy of anything except whatever gives me the best value for my money. I have no loyalty to brand, because that doesn't help me.

And yes, I do like to correct people when they make horrible comparisons in an attempt to justify their fanboyish nature.

I didn't say one was better than the other, unlike you.

I desperately need a new iPhone!!

I just purchased my first iPad which is an Air; I have a 2009 MBP but can't afford a new one (besides it fulfills my needs wonderfully); what I need is a new phone. I have an iPhone 4 and need to upgrade to 5s. So, Apple please please give me a big discount on the No Sim unlocked version cause the 2 year contract is awful! Let me use whichever carrier I want. I hope Apple managers are listening!!!!!

I didn't say one was better than the other, unlike you.

Show me where I ever said that Apple's sale policy was better than Best Buy's sale policy.

I never did. I don't think that Apple's sale policy is better than Best Buy's. You made that up to justify your argument.

If you don't think it's better why did you make a post talking about how much better it is?

Also, if you notice, Best Buy will offer a 60" TV for like $500, but it's only for the first 2 people in line. Everyone else pays full price. Apple, on the other hand, is giving the small discount to EVERYONE, not just the first 2 in line.

"Best Buy is only giving the deal to 2 people, but Apple will give it to every single person in the world!"

No, that's certainly not saying that Apple is better than Best Buy. Noooooope. Definitely not.

Right. Because when I think of Walmart, I think "classy". And when I think of Apple, I think "cheap."

Let me quote my experience at WalMart and Apple.

I go to Apple Store and here is a typical scene. The store is usually understaffed at times like these(Holiday Season..etc..) and I sauntered into the store hoping to buy something and I find all the geniuses already tailing other customers. I am not in a mood to browse anything as I already know what they are given Apple's limited portfolio of products. So I wait for a genius to finish with an customer and here it goes

Customer : Hi, I am looking to buy an iPad
Genius : Sure, Which model are you interested in?
Customer : Oh I dont know. Can you explain the various models?
-- Around 15 mins has passed explaining various models...
Customer : I think I will go with the 16 GB
Genius : Great, but you might run out of space in the near future.. so I would suggest the model with higher memory
Customer : How much is that?
Genius : It usually costs 100 dollars more...
Customer : Hmm.. I wasn't planning on spending that much..Well okay lets get that one.
Genius : Great. Now would you want to protect your iPad against scratches and stuff? We have a great selection of covers and cases...
Customer: Oh sure. Can you show them and suggest which is a good one?
Genius : Sure....

And this went on and on for like 40 minutes or more... Now substitute the above customer with a middle aged or older lady who has no clue about these things and is there to purchase it as a gift for their kids/grand kids etc... In that case just multiply the time taken for the above by 5 times.

Now I go to Wal Mart and I know exactly what I want and the Wal Mart staff are not(usually) not well versed with the specs and what not of the stuff they sell. They scan it and tell you the price and that's about it. Good for me as all have to do is point at it and say "I would like to buy this.."
Boom. Done. Taken out of the glass cases, scanned at the register and paid and walked out of the store in like 15 minutes Max.

I personally think Wal Mart was a classy experience for me! Rather than waiting at a Apple store for 40 minutes or more for a genius to attend to you.

Does anyone remember if this discount applies to education discounts as well or just retail pricing?

I want to buy a mac from the education store so is it $100 off the already discounted education pricing? If so, that is pretty cool.

that $101 off on the macbook pro, apply with the EDU so, on the base 15 inch model:

$1,899 (EDU PRICE) - $101 = TOTAL $1798 :D

works???

but is possible the $101 off with the Edu price? so double discount

Double discount with edu store?

This thread from last year says no
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1492999/

Technically, they are not supposed to give a double discount. I bought my Macbook in 2008 on BF and asked. The person I talked to didn't know, so they rung it up to see if it would work and it did. That's how I got my double discount! :D

Don't count on a double discount though! I think I just got lucky that one year. I haven't bought another computer since then, so I don't know if they clamped down on that.

So how did that happen? Because they don't have any special barcodes for student/teacher items. What they do is give you the student discount after looking your student Id. What were the sequences for that?

Looking to buy a base 13" Macbook air. So not much of a discount from Apple, but is this as good as the discount gets or is it any better at Christmas?

Thanks

"Best Buy is only giving the deal to 2 people, but Apple will give it to every single person in the world!"

No, that's certainly not saying that Apple is better than Best Buy. Noooooope. Definitely not.

It's not. I said Best Buy is giving an INCREDIBLE deal to 2 people, Apple is giving a TOKEN deal to everyone.

Where did I say that a TOKEN deal is better than an INCREDIBLE deal? Where did I say that everyone getting a TOKEN deal is better than 2 people getting an INCREDIBLE deal?

You're choosing to think that because 'everyone' is greater than 2, that Apple is better. Nope. You gloss over the fact that I also said that the Best Buy deals are better than the Apple deals.

sigh.

Does apple offer its retail staff a proper living wage?

Are its employees forced to work there? No? Then it doesn't matter.

Respectfully, I wouldn't characterize the scenario you just described as "waiting at a Apple store for 40 minutes or more for a genius to attend to you." To me that reads more like "An Apple store employee spent 40 minutes with me helping me to decide what I want."

Which, incidentally, contradicts your initial claim that you were "not in a mood to browse anything" as you already knew what their products were...

They should have done a no sales tax event.

yeah, the government's trying to get them to pay more taxes, not less :p
