APPLE c'mon this just looks crazy. With your genius marketing staff this is the best you can do. You're better then this.

Oh c'mon, how long have you been an Apple customer? There's nothing new here. Year after year this is the same BF sales discounts they give. They are not offering anything more or less from the last 5 years straight, yet people here keep acting like it's the first time Apple has pulled this.

if they make the discount too good, people will just order stuff to sell it for more.

and big discounts are also bad for the lasting value of their products.

Apple, you have to learn how to do holiday sales from the retail giants like Walmart or BestBuy.

Stop these lowball offers... it really looks cheap!

Right. Because when I think of Walmart, I think "classy". And when I think of Apple, I think "cheap."

Usually only products in stock get a discount from apple.

Which means: no ipad mini retina discount and most likely no ipad air either

the problem is, Apple doesnt need to entice people to buy their products... If an iPad is on your shopping list, you are going to buy an iPad. No matter where you buy that iPad from, its still an iPad

Does anybody look at the other side (i.e. manufacturer) and the problems discounts pose.

Plenty of reasons not to offer discounts:

If everything sells without , why have discounts?

If the discount is too high retail partners get upset, as you are now competing with them as the manufacturer.

If you always significantly (Apple is not ) discount around a certain time of year
consumers will outwait you and only buy around discount/sales times.

Discounts are usually given to move old product, increase sales numbers etc. etc.

There are more, but let's just say Apple feels compelled to give "token" discounts,
which btw in their case go directly against the bottom line (Yeah , yeah they have it, still not a reason)

While we chuckle at free shipping, it's worth money and while we may think their discounts don't amount to much, again, it's money you don't have to spend.

Apple will sell with or without discount, so don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

If anything, I'd prefer FREE Apple Care. That doesn't cost them much given the longevity of their products and may in the along run entice users to always buy Apple Care

I think the issue is they are advertising these low abysmal discounts like they have significant impact on the retail price.

Apple, Microsoft and Sony usually have no huge manufacturer discounts for BF.

Usually the retail outlets offset the retail price with store gift cards because most retailers aren't allow to advertise lower prices.

Does anyone remember if this discount applies to education discounts as well or just retail pricing?

Hmm, I'm guessing we don't see $100 off on the MacBook Pro Retinas. Too recent. But if we do, will it apply to all models? I'm feeling like the middle option is "the" computer to buy right now. 256GB storage seems about the minimum to run with. And 8GB memory seems sufficient and sufficiently future proof for a consumer laptop.

I like to think of it like generic ibuprofen versus brand name (Advil, Motrin, others). Some people know they are getting the same thing so they buy MacMall Apple products at a discount and are happy. While others feel like getting it from the source as a more "authentic" or "more likely to be successful for them"* method, and could be uncertain of what [big box retailer] would do if they bought a lemon and wonder where to return it to; even a small discount during Black Friday would give people a second thought if they (these people) were considering deeper discounts elsewhere (Best Buy, Walmart, etc.). Although I would think that "an iPod is just an iPod"** more then "an iMac is just an iMac, but I could be wrong.

*I bought my Mini from Amazon because it was slightly cheaper, had 2-day shipping, I saved like $75 on tax, and I could open the box to find my cheap RAM that I subsequently shoved inside.

**A filling station near me, for at least 5 years and to this day, has for sale a 2GB MP3 player priced at around $150 with an Apple for a logo that has a bite taken out of both sides.

That's the beauty of creating best of breed products in every category. You don't need discounts to drive sales. The products sell themselves at almost any price. It's not a problem it's the joy of being in the Apple ecosystem.

If you want Apple to continue making the best products in every category, you need to be willing to financially support that.

Black Friday gripes response

A company that has a good product, can charge what they want, that people will pay. It's called free market. We can choose something cheaper, if it's too much. I love my Macbookpro, but it's a 2010, and I'm wasn't happy to find out, after I bought it, that the battery is built in. As I have to drive over 100 miles to the nearest dealer, this isn't acceptable. Wish I'd known, but that's on me to find out. With a discount, I may just buy a new one. Thanks Apple!

Well said. Of course we should thank Apple for any discount, and appreciate it, but we all know we're getting the best products when we buy from Apple. So the price is almost irrelevant. Obviously if cost is important to you, there are many options in the marketplace for compromised products at a lower price.

Hi Phil. ;)

I usually shop at Amazon (free 2-day, $3.99 one-day), and used to shop at a place called zipzoomfly (free 3-day, I think), both of which offered free shipping on all (or like enough all) their products. When I go to buy on other sites I'm still shocked at having to pay $5-20 for shipping (especially something small that you could stick in an envelope, not that anyone does) which can easily be a deal-breaker for me, especially when the discount will be comparable when shipping costs are taken into account and especially when places like Amazon are very good about getting it here on [Thursday] when I order it on [Monday], which is better than [some time between Wednesday and next week whether I'm there or not and will the neighbors steal my package again because they left it on the front door of an apartment building? Or should I just go to the Apple store and be done with it?].

I think I got distracted while writing that.

my home button is getting temperamental, I might need a new iphone (3 year old iphone4). Looks like there was no discount last year. :(

i love the "defend apple at all costs" people.

yes we will all continue to buy apple but apple can do better on discounting their products for a black friday event.

41 dollars off an iPad? how random...

Doesn't look random to me at all. I bet someone did some massive calculations what discounts would be best for Apple, and they ended up with $41 being optimal (less discount and more sales go elsewhere, more discount and profits per sale drops; there must be some optimal point).
