I did not have to give my Social Security number to use my current phone. Apple does not need that information.

This isn't specific to the iPhone. Apple has nothing to do with your SSN. AT&T is requiring it for activation. Cell phone carriers always require SSN's when signing up for a contract. Since the only option AT&T is offering for buying an iPhone at launch is to sign up for a two-year contract and get the phone activated in the store (not an uncommon practice for hot new phones) it makes sense that you would have to provide an SSN at the Apple Store.

Apple is not — at least at launch — selling the iPhone 3G at any of its retail locations outside the United States

Australia, Japan, Italy, and UK retail stores will also not have initial stock of the iPhone 3G, forcing customers in those countries to visit official carrier stores or third-party partners like Fido in Canada

This is according to iPhone atlas

http://www.iphoneatlas.com/2008/07/...-any-plans-to-sell-iphone-3g-at-apple-retail/

that's not what o2 seem to think about the uk: "Apple stores will have
more devices" (http://customerforum.o2.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=2866)

If anyone is doing a family plan and someone in the plan is NOT buying an iPhone, you should go to AT&T.

My family plan will have two iPhones and two non iPhones. I'll be getting to AT&T early, though.

Per SSNs, you don't have to provide AT&T with your SSN and you don't have to sign up for a contract either.

... More specific details that I would like posted by Apple...

"Kris ... you need to arrive at your local Rogers Wireless store (located at 18-993 Fir Street, Sherwood Park, AB T8A 4N5) by 4:15 am in order to secure your iPhone 3G. (Because we both hate Rogers and we only sent them 3 phones a store)"

I thought you HAD to get a contract on the phone... I heard they weren't selling it outright.

*sigh* I wish buying an iphone was as nice as this sounds.....all we have in the UK is bloody O2, who couldn't organise a row of chairs.

All the ID requirements are very intrusive. Very 1984 but it seems a lot of people are happy with what I find disgusting and overly officious so ... Reminds me of when I was in Canada for a long stay... I bought a car and thought getting insurance would be easy ... but no .. they wanted to write to France for a credit check ... I said "Look forget it ... I'll pay the whole years premium up front. I don't want to sit in this hotel room in Toronto for weeks waiting ... I want to get out in my car and see this country!" She said "Even if you pay the whole amount we still need a credit check!" What a system! I got it from the car salesman's uncle's cousin's sister's dog in the end. It's a ****in' snazzy phone at the end of the day and these jerks want the green light from the NSA before permitting you to have one. While I'm moaning ... the price is ****in' outrageous too! Yeah I know ... don't get one then.

LOL ... out here in Alberta my insurance company FINALLY has stopped bending me over... Don't even get me started on that! What do you have to give for a credit check in Fr.? Or do they just skip that... and your iPhone comes with a free crape.... mmmm crapes.

I wonder how the jailbreaking crowd will get around this?

I think Apple needs to see a green card... and maybe put a chip inside ur finger so you can use the phone. LOL

OK... the requirements for the Sin # and all that is AT&T... why is everyone griping that Apple is the one being the dicks about it. If Apple had their way everyone would have an iPhone... they dont want it to be this hard.

There may be other ways to have your credit checked, but I doubt Apple will be set up to handle them. Since they don't regularly do credit checks I'm guessing the only way they will be able to perform a check will be with your SSN. No one is forcing you to buy an iPhone or get a contract with AT&T. Private companies have a right to refuse to sell to or serve someone.

I don't recall what my password is with AT&T. I have a PIN number I use to access my account by phone. I'm guessing that's what they're talking about. For new customers I think they may just want you to be prepared to set one up.

And since there are different versions of the Apple website I'm sure they all have different information. We can't expect arn to check all of them when he makes an update. If you have questions, check to see what it says on the site for your country.

Also, it's a bad idea to go anywhere without ID on you anyway. Especially if you drive there.

I think you need to re-read the Privacy Act of 1974 (http://www.justice.gov/oip/privstat.htm):

"Sec. 7(a) (1) It shall be unlawful for any Federal, State or local government agency to deny to any individual...because of such individual's refusal to disclose his social security account number."

I don't see anything in there saying it's unlawful for a non-government entity to require it. Our credit system, as flawed as it is, chose to use the SSN as a universal identifier and so if you want to play the game, you have to play by the rules. Are you going to refuse to give your SSN when buying a house, a car or entering into some other major contract?

He didn't say it was unlawful, he said you just don't need to give it up.

HOW MUCH WILL iPHONE COST AT APPLE STORE?

I'm confused... The iPhone is $199, but only with a 2-year ATT contract. How much will I have to pay at the Apple Store for an unlocked phone? There were news reports that ATT will sell unlocked iPhones for $599. If Apple is selling them for $199, why would anyone pay ATT $599? Please advise.

I'm sure there's a way... but why jailbreak when you have real apps that don't crash... Only unlocking it but... then you can't really update... this may be the end of Jailbreaking... but who knows... time will say it!

Apple is selling for $199... but with the 2 year AT&T contract as well. ... I thought they werent going to allow the phone to be sold outright... and most definitely not selling unlocked ones.

The unlocked phones will be available at a later date. You can only buy an iPhone for $199 with a contract, and I'm pretty sure they're only handling contracts on Friday.
