I don't recall what my password is with AT&T. I have a PIN number I use to access my account by phone. I'm guessing that's what they're talking about. For new customers I think they may just want you to be prepared to set one up.

I think this is if you are porting your number over from another carrier to AT&T... they want to make sure the account holder has the phone # and password/pin to approve the process.

I'm confused... The iPhone is $199, but only with a 2-year ATT contract. How much will I have to pay at the Apple Store for an unlocked phone? There were news reports that ATT will sell unlocked iPhones for $599. If Apple is selling them for $199, why would anyone pay ATT $599? Please advise.

ATT or Apple won't sell you a unlocked phone...

AT&T is offering an unsubsidized price of $599 and $699 at a later date as a "no commitment" price for individuals who do not wish to sign a long-term contract.

apple doesn't sell unlocked phones... att will definitely never sell unlocked phones....

I am a Verizon customer with a regular cell phone switching to an iPhone. So what does this mean to me?

"- Your current wireless account number and password or PIN (if you’re new to AT&T)"

I have my wireless account number, so what password/PIN do I need?

It means your call quality and signal strength will be less.

I bought an iPhone in September after switching from Verizon. By far Verizon has better service. I will be buying an iPhone 3G to see if the signal is a little better at my work. If not I will return it as it is tough to payy $100 a month and have it not work 9 hours out of the day whicle at work.

...
- Credit card
- Social security number
- Valid, government-issued photo ID...

WTF!? Why do they need all that information? That's three big reasons not to get an iPhone if you ask me. What a shame we've gone from good old USofA to United States of Communist America.

I suggest everyone whining about the SS# go and try and get a phone without one.

Good luck.

For existing customers, it's how they identify you as the person that holds the account, the government issued ID is the second, the credit card is the third. Everythign lines up and you get an activated phone.

For new customers, it's for the credit check and also to verify identity...

Contact Verizon and see what your password is. They have one on your file to protect your account. AT&T will need this in order to port your number over from Verizon.

Its called a credit check:rolleyes:

This isn't specific to the iPhone. Apple has nothing to do with your SSN. AT&T is requiring it for activation. Cell phone carriers always require SSN's when signing up for a contract. Since the only option AT&T is offering for buying an iPhone at launch is to sign up for a two-year contract and get the phone activated in the store (not an uncommon practice for hot new phones) it makes sense that you would have to provide an SSN at the Apple Store.

i've never heard in the U.S. of someone not needing their SSN to get phone service (aside from pay as you go)... because just like any other unpaid bill if it got that far, will go to collections and post to your credit report which is based off of your SSN.

well those would be reasons for you not to get a cell phone and not just the iPhone... those are industry standard requests. And i'm quite sure that there is other id accepted in replacement of the SS#... but arent you more afraid of the patriot act, than having a HUGE company like AT&T do a credit check...

Well, more confusion. I just called AT&T and they informed me that you could buy one at Apple but they cannot activate it there and I would have to activate it at home. Now this goes completely against the "you must activate in store" policy but that is straight from AT&T's mouth. Guess we'll have to wait until later in the week to find out something definitive but the clock is ticking...

In The UK

Just confirmed with Apple Store in Bluewater (that's in Kent, England;)) that they *WILL* be selling iPhone3G from Friday (so this isn't a US only thread).

If it helps, they advised that they couldn't handle customers wanting to do number porting. "Anything to do with phone numbers will have to be done at O2 - but there are two O2 stores in Bluewater".

Don't know why I'm telling you this, cause it will only increase the queues (not a US-only thread, remember) round at the O2 store.

3g reverting back to EDGE

So i don't know if this is the right place to put this, but i just wanted to make sure before friday. 3G works around my house and where i live, but i go to college on the east coast and 3g isn't available in my area there. Does anyone know the the iphone 3g will still be able to recieve data without the 3g network, will it revert back to EDGE when 3g isn't available?

Everything posted on Apple's end states they will be activating in store. All the stores need to activate is a unique version of iTunes... so I assume all the Apple stores will have this in place.

Yes, Iphone 3g will automatically revert back to EDGE if 3G is not available, hope this helps.

apple still leaves many questions unanswered on their launch and activation process. come on apple there's only 3 days left!
anyway i have a question, I'm 18 and an Authorized user on my mom's AT&T account, will Apple be able to see I am an authorized user and let me buy and resign the contract or will my mom still have to be there?

also..does anyone know if i can buy at an apple store if I have a FAN# on my account. i currently don't get the discount right now anyway for some reason. if Apple wont deal with FAN accounts i can remove it. but does anyone know yet. my employees at the apple store seem to know less than us macrumors members do.

Yeah, I absolutely HATE the fact that Apple does this - leaves out everyone, including their own employees out of the loop with so many questions unanswered until the very last minute.
WHY APPLE? MARKETING?
Anywayz - I'm still going to the :apple: Store on Friday after work and hope to grab a 16 GB one.

True enough but the question still remains to be answered regarding those of us that are AT&T customers but aren't eligible for an upgrade, can we buy them in the Apple store or do we have to go to AT&T. 1 Apple store said yes, they will be selling them at the 399/499 price while 2 others I contacted said they don't know yet.

definite co-sign.... plus apple moreso att is trying to keep someone from buying 10 phones and unlocking them and selling in like russia and india or wherever... no ssn, will heavily deter that...

This is not true of all regions. AT&T has less quality service in tri-state area because Bell Atlantic was purchased by Verizon, therefore existing towers and whatnot are on the Verizon network. This is nearly the exact reverse of Texas, for example, where Southwestern Bell was purchased by AT&T and Verizon has bad service. History, people, it's important ;)

edit: basically, track where the old Bell broke up into regional Bells, and see who purchased who and what, and you'll see if you have good signal in that area.

I agree that this is a little vague ... but can I ask why if you know that AT&T can handle it... why wouldnt you go there?
