definite co-sign.... plus apple moreso att is trying to keep someone from buying 10 phones and unlocking them and selling in like russia and india or wherever... no ssn, will heavily deter that...

I think since AT&T is subsidizing the iPhone ... hoping to make that money back later... they actually want to verify the person getting the phone is a real person and not "stealing" it.

I agree that this is a little vague ... but can I ask why if you know that AT&T can handle it... why wouldnt you go there?

Personally I would rather go to an Apple store than an AT&T store because the fanfare and excitement of waiting for the doors to open will be much more exciting at the Apple store. According to the experiences people had last year the AT&T stores were understocked while most of the Apple stores had plenty to go around. Logistically speaking the Apple store is way more convenient for me to get to than the AT&T store. It's gonna be an early morning either way so instead of being crabby in line at the AT&T store I'd rather be happily surrounded by Apple enthusiasts :D

Agreed! And you may not even know why.

The Privacy Act of 1974 states there are only 4 instances when a social security number can be demanded or expected ... And purchasing a phone IS NOT one of them. Stand up to your right to maintain your privacy. Big government controls America too much already. End rant!

I've seen people saying this in a lot of threads. The Privacy Act of 1974 only has to do with governments requiring you to give them your social security number. They (federal, state, local governments) can't deny you service for not giving your social security number. Whatever anyone may think about "big government" or corporations or privacy, what you're saying just isn't true. This act has NOTHING to do with private businesses. Sure, you can refuse to give a private business your SSN, and they can refuse to give you service (credit card, cell phone service, whatever).

From Dept. of Justice, you can find same info anywhere from googling:

http://www.usdoj.gov/oip/1974ssnu.htm

SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER USAGE

Section 7 of the Privacy Act (found at 5 U.S.C. § 552a note (Disclosure of Social Security Number)) provides that:

"It shall be unlawful for any Federal, State or local government agency to deny to any individual any right, benefit, or privilege provided by law because of such individual's refusal to disclose his social security account number." Sec. 7(a)(1).

(it goes on to explain all the exceptions -- driver's licenses, state taxes, anything in place before 1975, etc., etc.)

I've never been in an apple store either, I don't think im missing much theres a bestbuy i can go to. There the same right? ;)

wow, it's turning out to be such a PITA to get a phone. Why they couldn't made something simpler, i'd say rebate you buy one for $600 and than get a rebate for $400 when you activated with att, could be so much easier and less crowed.

Jobs failed twice:

1) We want to be green, that's why we are switching to plastic
2) We want to simplify process of getting new phone, now you can do it at home, but now you for some reason it's get back to annoying process.

it's like he has "two face"

SIN Numbers

Whats your issue about SS #'s... if your gripe is you don't have one in your country... then understand this topic was for US AT&T customers only.

If your gripe is that you have to give out your SS #... I assume this is needed for ALL new activiations in the US... (in order to do a credit check)... The same way that the SIN number is requested in Canada.

Its not specific to the iPhone... its specific to the cell phone industry.

The weird difference between US SS# and Canadian SIN# is who, by law, by can demand that you give them the #.

In Canada, you don't have to give your number for credit check. It may slow down the process, and some companies may choose not to do business with you. You do have to give your SIN# to bank, so that they can tell the tax people about your taxable interest. But you don't have to give your SIN# to the federal govt (the people who gave you the SIN# in the first place) to receive services, unless they are giving you money. My wife used to work for the department that managed the system, and provided unemployment services (job clubs, etc) and every once in awhile someone would refuse to divulge their SIN#. Unless there was money involved (and therefore the tax department) they had to respect their privacy rights. Weird.

Rogers here in Canada had to throw the chairs out of their boardroom... as they needed the room for all the money they are making off us Canucks.

Yeah i heard how you guys are getting royaly f***ed! I signed the petition though!

Right... but we are not really talking about someone demanding your SS#... they just are asking for it in order to facilitate a credit check. You have the right to say no.

Valid, government-issued photo ID

Huh!?! That's bogus. I don't have a government-issued photo ID. Our state does not mandate a photo on our driver's license.

As someone who has worked in an enforcement agency... I hate that. Pull over drivers and they give you a slip of paper with a generic description. How am I supposed to verify that the person I have pulled over is the one the licence is for.

Thanks... I did as well.. unfortunately I think Ted likes his 100 dollar bills crammed into his bank rather than a few online signatures.

I cant really complain... as much as I hate it... I just have a lust for the iPhone and wont be able to control myself to NOT buy one.

Apparently you missed the fact that Bush did not get voted in twice.

That's true - he got in twice, but it wasn't due to the votes. Rulers are really selected by bloodline by the global shadow government. Not by popularity/vote. Watch David Icke on Google Video.

Anyone know the rules about whether non-account owners can buy the iPhone 3G at an Apple Store? I went to an AT&T store a couple days ago and they told me that although I am not the account owner, the account owner (my mother) could add me as an Authorized user, and that would enable me to purchase the iPhone 3G and renew my account. (Note: I'm a "current iPhone owner," and thus upgrade eligible; I did sell my iPhone a couple weeks ago, but didn't buy another subsidized phone, so I should still me upgrade eligible. Though I guess we're still unsure how Apple Stores will deal with this.). Anyway, we added me as an Authorized user online, and it seemed to work fine.

But now I'm curious whether this will pass at the Apple Store as well. I'd rather go to the Apple Store (more supply, better service), but I really don't want to wait in line for 8 hours only to be turned away. Any ideas?

Apple Show Some Loyalty

In all this madness that I've been reading in these blogs, no one has brought up the fact the Apple should step up and show some loyalty. On Friday it'll right around a year that I've owned the iPhone, which i shelled out $600 for on the first day it came out. And now, a year later Apple of course has to entice its' customers with a 'new and improved' iPhone. That's all well and good, and though I'll try to resist, I'm sure I'll be there fri morning like everyone else waiting in line. BUT HERE"S AN IDEA. why can't Apple try and show some respect to the people who, just a year ago, waited in line for hours and even days to buy their product. People who have continuously bought there product over the years, and who sit on blogs like this anticipating Apple's next move. Would is really be hard for Apple to contact all the people who own iphone's currently and offer them a subsidized phone by mail, or a separate line, or a guarantee that they're going to get one without sleeping outside a store for the next couple days. Trust me, I understand supply and demand, but it reaches a certain point where common sense must tell them that the easier thing to do would be to answer all of our questions and make things as easy as possible for the customer. Because the way things seem now, Friday is going to be complete chaos. GOODLUCK to ALL

Don't hate me because I'm an obscessive, compulsive, fiercely over-protective, coveting, materialistic son of a gun, but let me see if I've got this straight...

SOME 20-SOMETHING YEAR OLD CHICK OR DUDE WHO HAS LITTLE TO NO REGARD FOR THE SANCTITY OF OTHER PEOPLES' PROPERTY...AND WHO WILL UNDOUBTEDLY BE WEARING ABRASIVE JEWELRY ON EACH FINGER...AND WHO WILL MOST ASSUREDLY BE TOSSING YOUR NEW IPHONE AROUND AND LAYING IT PLASTIC BACK-SIDE DOWN ON THE COUNTERTOP DURING THE ACTIVATION PROCESS....

....you mean to tell me this is the person who will actually be unpackaging ( or worse still -- have them unpackaged in bulk, waiting for each customer) and touching my brand new iPhone 3G before I even have a chance to??!!!

Just like a mother in the wild will sometimes reject her newborn pups if a human touches it, neither do I want or need somebody putting their stinkin paws all over my stuff! It ruins the whole buying experience if you ask me!!

I like keeping my stuff new-looking and untainted. If I hadn't been careless and dropped my current iPhone while I (ironically, of all things) had it out of the case and was cleaning it, it wouldnt have a single scratch on it...an I've had it since day 1 of the original launch!!

Surely each employee at AT&T and Apple will be wearing white gloves, yes?

Yes, surely. God forbid they drop it on the floor.

What the ****? Apple does not need my Social Security number! Yet another reason not to purchase the iPhone.

Agreed. This is a pet peeve of mine. There is one and only one legitimate use for a SSN, and that's so you can be identified upon retirement and awarded your social security accordingly. But that has spilled over to the RMV, and banks, and then to other financial institutions, and now every company out there these days thinks it's entitled to your SSN every time you sign up with them for anything. Utilities, cable internet, cell phones, you name it.

A word of advice. None of these companies, including apple and AT&T, need your SSN. Don't believe them when they tell you they do. It's a lie. Moreover, the more times you give it out, the greater the risk you place yourself at. I know this might sound paranoid, but think about how many places that number lives by now. And if some crook steals it, it's not like losing a credit card. They can wreck your life with that number, and it can take years to sort out.

Don't buy in to this crap. Just say no to giving out your SSN.

Buying Advice: Mall of America, Bloomington MN-USA

Hey all,
I just called the Apple Store MoA and the rep said that they have no plans in place to accommodate people "camping out."

However, she mentioned that she thought the public areas of the mall opened early and that one should be able to get in at that time.

I called the Mall of America general information and the rep had no idea about any kind of Apple "event" or "product release" that needed special accommodations. She transferred me to security and they too knew of no such special need by the Apple store. The security rep said that I should call back on Thursday because they would know for certain by then if the Apple store needed to make arrangements.

The public areas of the mall open at 7:00 am so folks should be able to get into the mall and line up outside the Apple store at that time. As far as line up OUTSIDE the mall, I have no idea but I have been told that security does NOT allow overnight parking which preclude "camping out" unless one was dropped off.

I'm calling back on Thursday and I will update but as of right now, looks like no camping out for the iPhone at Mall of America, Bloomington MN-USA.

Don't know if this will help anyone but I just spoke to my local Apple Store (Legacy Village) and the Apple rep said that if you are a current iPhone owner and already have an account with AT&T you just need a credit card for purchase and your wireless number and password to set everything up. No need for an ID or SS #. Just have your current phone with you and you are set to go.

do you need the phone itself? In preparation for the new iphone my sister and i sold our iphones on ebay to pay for the new phone. it should be okay as long as we have the iphone plan on our account? right?
