BIG $$$ prime time buys !!

The commercial is basically Apple propoganda. "dull little boxes" So I guess all those servers that run on Intel Xeons are worthless? The world's second fastest super computer based off Intel Itaniums is dull?

I could go on and on, but basically I think this commercial is terrible because it goes overboard in its attack on Windows PCs.

I'm not going to sit around and find examples of Intel (or AMD) based PCs doing tasks that are anything but dull. It should be rather obvious though, that if PCs were that bad, why doesn't everyone buy a Mac?

Hmmmmmmm.....

Let's not take the Ad too seriously. Apple have always poked fun at Windows and for good reason: Apple's OSs are better. Now there is no denying that great things have been done on Windows based machines, my work for example ;). Apple is aiming for the home user and the truth is that OSC is more fun to use than Windows out of the box...

Why doesn't everyone buy Mac? Since when has quality been the only factor of a purchase? Why doesn't everyone buy a Mercedes or organic produce or Valrhona chocolate or digital SLRs or 60" plasmas?

Add to that the marketing c*ck-ups of the late eighties and nineties and you have windows domination. IBM compatible machines were made by everyone and Windows was the OS that went hand in hand with them.

That thought had crossed my mind. I still think it is too scathing. Whether or not "it is poking fun" the fact remains that the wording of the ad is an attack on Windows PCs, and when you don't take into account that it may or may not be 100% serious the ad is too harsh to the average person.

Instead of explaing how the Mac is better, Apple scripts a cute commercial that slams Windows PCs and does nothing to tell people WHY.

And when I asked the question "why doesn't everyone buy/have macs" I actually was referring to the high end market. If the PCs were that bad, wouldn't those in postion with enough money buy the 'quality' computer?

You may have a point. I have always advocated a 30 second iLife ad to bring people to the mac, but the truth is that the press have let the world know that Apple is moving to intel and Apple wants to world to know that the first models are here. All they really want to say is that we are now using the intels and little else. So they just spice the ad up with a little Windows poking.

In terms of the high-end users not buying Macs, there are reasons. I love Macs, but I get excited when I see things like the X1600 in the MBP because it means that the hardware is ready for games, now we just need the games. This is true for several types of App. I for one love using SQL Server at work and there is no decent equivalent on the mac.

I liked the old eMac commercials with the voice of that one guy from Independence Day. They should bring back those kind ;)

It never says "worthless" it just says "dull." Compare for me:

And last time I checked, the worlds second fastest supercomputer is not running Intel.

I haven't seen the ad on TV yet but I'm sure they'll stick it on during Celeb Big Brother (UK) at some point.

As for the earlier arguement about the pronounciation of OS X: - I've always called it "Ten" just like Steve. They used the Roman numerals to differentiate it from OS 1-9, which were incompatible.

Interesting to see the Apple logo with Mac written next to it. Or am I the only one who thinks it is? lol. But really though, 'Mac' seems to be getting a serious push right now....

Would someone who dislikes the commercial care to comment exactly why?

I know that some are saying that it's an attack. But really, "dull little boxes" is threatening? As far as I'm concerned, saying that's an attack is like a third grader crying foul because someone threw a paper ball at him.

No, more like the commercial itself is a like a younger brother calling an older sibling names. The commercial does nothing to tell people why Mac is better, it simply screams that PCs are dull and do dull things.

@EricNau

The basic idea of citing that example was to show the role intel processors have in supercomputers.

However, I may have looked at an old listing for my 2nd ranking. My apologies:)

The ad not only says the boxes are dull, but that they have been "dull things". That's real 'attack' if you will.

The ad does not say that the intel processors are "dull things." Rather it says "[the intel chip] ...Dutifully performing dull little tasks, while it could have been doing so much more..."
I took that as saying "The intel chip is being wasted on a PC because Windows does not completely utilize it's powers."

The commercial said "...While it could have been doing so much more..." - I thought that was praising Intel. It was saying the problem was not in the processor, but in the OS/PC.

But I can see how it can also be interpreted the other way.

Jeez, another error on my part. I meant to say doing dull things, not that they are:rolleyes:
