Nice ad, very well shot.
It´s funny to watch this kind of advertising from a Norwegian point of view, as we have laws that prohibit the advertiser to talk down about the competition in any way.

I think I prefer it the Norwegian way; bragg about your stuff, but don´t slag anyone else off in the process

Not Clever

I don't think Apple did itself any favours with it's "dull" Intel campaign. Especially when Apple is only a small customer of Intel.
In fact if I was Intel, I would be quite concerned that Apple was call much larger clients "dull". Pretty damn dumb if you ask me.

Very good point. I'd like to see what percentage of Intel's buisness Apple buys. I guess i could see them placing this ad in order to make Intel seem OK after bashing them for so many years (i.e. the snail/intel ad). They're trying to say "Intel's not dull, it's the computers that they were in." While it may be hard to get this accross without explicitly bashing on intel-based PCs, i still think it was sort of distasteful.

Most feature films are actually editet on Mac based systems! However Avid Film Composer is mostly used and not Final Cut Pro. This is due to the fact that Avid pioneered editing low resolution versions of scanned film stock. Afterwards the actual film is assembled using the Avid version as a reference.

Final Cut Pro actually dominates the rest of the media market - being the nonlinear editing system with most users.

Acording to rumors Apple is going after the Avid film market by launching Final Cut Extreeme at next NAB-convention.

Final Cut has actually already been used to edit big budget movies like Cold Mountain, because of the integration of CinemaTools.

actually no they're not, they're primarilly shot on film and when film was not used, the opted for betacam for the better quality. not until the last few years has final cut pro been used for any type of feature film. the only one i know of is cold mountain. It is only recently that people, mainly the prosumer market, have started using final cut pro and with dv. I work in the industry and most of the post production houses use the avid on pc based systems, but now and then you are seeing more job opportunitie for final cut pro editors. i've noticed the switch:cool:

The Corpse Bride was done completely with Final Cut Pro, on an Powermac G5.

Now, why would competitors believe this to be insulting?
Surely they're aware of how dull their offerings are, as did
I.B.M. (aka Incredibly Boring Machines) did back in the 80's
and 90's. This commercial is quite inspirational -- would one
not agree that the MacIntosh 1984 Super-bowl commercial
was extraordinary? More compliments than complaints
back then...

I agree completely. This ad is inspired, just like the original 1984 one was. Back to Apple at its best.

Ok, so the number of chips going to Macs compared with PCs will be relatively small, but lets not forget that the entire industry is trying to make their computers like Macs (too bad, they're stuck with Windows ;) ). Apple's market share in the computing industry may be small (although significant) but it is the company that everyone is watching. The whole iPod thing just adds to the sway that Apple is building up.

Getting Apple on its side was a major goal for Intel and is now a big asset. And how about all those washing powder ads that basically say how their products are ten times better than the rival? Apple does not speicifcally single out Dell or HP or anything in this ad and so it's not a particular insult. PC makers know their machines are dull. That's why they're still trying to copy Apple's every move.

anyone get a little foreboding chill when next to the apple at the end it didnt say "apple" but said "mac"? I hate it when people think the company name is mac. not to mention the very unrealistic "apple breaks up into two companies, iPod and Mac" fears.

Yeah... I don't want all the Windoze n00bs being even more annoying. Take this case study:

Christmas 2005, Fashion Valley Apple Store:

n00b: *points at iMac G5* Whooooaa *hyuk-hyuk* That's one biiiig i-POD!
The Fish: *facepalm*

The top annoying computer related things are

1. Windoze nerds with iPods who don't know what a Mac is
2. Windoze nerds miscapitalizing "iPod"
3. Micro$oft ripping of Mac OS since it went GUI
4. People calling Apple "Mac"

grrrarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

But the company's Apple, the iPods are iPods and the computers are Macs.

The iPod ads have the Apple logo and the word iPod, I don't have a problem with the adverts saying Mac so long as that little Apple logo is alongside it. When people ask me what computer I have, I tell them it's a Mac. People are getting used to seeing the ? with the iPod nomenclature, let them see ? Mac alongside and hopefully realise that the ? does both :p

I love this ad! its so Apple computer. Makes you feel good in a geeky mac pride kinda way. Yeah, according to CNN intel wasn't too happy about the ad, and only got a peak at it moments before @ macworld. Haha lol thats funny.

You forgot Windows users pronouncing it "O-S ex."

OS Ten since it came after System 9, it seems logical. But the X looks sexier on the packaging ;)
Every Genius I've ever talked to has called it "oh-es-ex". I guess it must be different in different areas. What does Stevezy call it?

From Wikipedia - Link
The character X is a Roman numeral and is officially pronounced "ten", continuing the numbering of previous Macintosh operating systems such as Mac OS 8 and Mac OS 9. However, it is a common mistake to read it as the letter X and pronounce it "ex". One possible reason for this interpretation is the tradition of giving Unix-like operating systems names that end with the letter "X" as an "ex" sound (AIX, HP-UX, IRIX, Linux, Minix, Ultrix, Xenix). Another possible reason is Apple's tendency to refer to specific versions in print (for example, "Mac OS X version 10.4").

Uh, when Apple is known mainly for the iPod outside of the computer techies, what do you expect?

And all companies rip off others at some point in time. Apple has taken some Microsoft things....Microsoft from Apple...Apple from Xerox ;)

I say O S ex :)

He calls it "OS 10", but you could argue that the XServe got it's name through the operating system, so should it be called "Ten Serve"? I think both are valid pronunciations, but the more accurate one is "OS Ten".

I don't care much though, I usually refer to it as 10.x or it's cat name, using Mac OS when using a general comparison to Windows.

I called it OS Ex back when I first read about it in Mac Addict back in 2001. I was still a Windows user at the time.

Ever since I found out it was supposed to be pronounced "Ten," that's how I've pronounced it.

I'm over at my parent's house for dinner tonight. My mom and I were watching 60 minutes, and we saw the ad during a commercial break.

It was the first ad in the rotation.

My mom loved it, said she thought it was great.

Personally, I really like that ad. I don't think it's too insulting to anyone--after all, the statements are true ;) Can't sue for deflamation of character unless it's a lie, y'know? lol

But seriously, being the first ad I saw for a Mac since the 12" and 17" PBs were released, it's a good thing. :)
