whoops sorry didn't reload and went back and just quoted didnt realize you read it, doesnt beta 9 make you put that id number or whatever it is
If you have a PC then the betas only go up to 7.

I think you mean a UUID number? That is required to activate the betas prior to the GM - not iTunes.

How come the software update feature doesn't work in the new gm version? It's said try again later? Whys that?

is there any way to get a hold of the actual backup file

There may be but I don't know what it is. I have battled with this exact issue before without success.

BTW: did you try to restore the backup that you have there again? When I installed one of the previous betas I had to restore twice to get my contacts.

yes. mounted the .dmg and have the following:

iphone3,1_5.0_9A334_Restore.ipsw

Can't seem to be able to open it. Also, holding shift when clicking restore in iTunes doesn't do anything besides just restoring to 4.3.5 again.

You need to hold down the alt (option) key when clicking restore then point to the ipsw in the mounted dmg

Is anybody having issues with their SMS? After I updated to the GSM and restored from my 4.3.5 backup, I can send SMS but can't receive. Every time that I send a message, I get an error saying that the inbox is full and that I cannot receive messages at this time. I restored the phone over again to see if it would work, and it didn't. Any thoughts??

does anyone know if it is possible now to convert @gmail.com to @me.com as your apple id?

Apple is said to be working in allowing users to merge 2 iTunes accounts. That would allow you to transfer your apps, books, songs to your new iTunes account. But we'll see if it really happens

Apple wants us to backup to iCloud, but it only provides 5 GB free..

Would've been nice if they could've bumped that up to equal your iPhone's capacity (e.g. 8 GB if you have an 8 GB iPhone; 64 GB if you have a 64 GB iPhone).. would give users another reason to buy a higher-capacity iPhone, too.

thanks for your help but I just got home from school and tried it today and it worked, yesterday at least 15 times it gave me the same error message idk maybe a server problem or something cuz I restarted and shut off my computer yesterday but now with the same backup I was trying with yesterday it happened one shot deal I finally have my contacts back! this damn iCloud needs to go live I won't have to worry about this problem anymore...once again thanks

Can anyone confirm Newsstand is still a placeholder?

It's never been a placeholder. It requires and has always required apps from the App Store that are compiled against the Newsstand API. Currently there are none available as Apple have only just put out the call for iOS 5 compatible apps.

Backups are for the data, not the apps themselves.

if there is some showstopper bug found in the GM build is it possible there will be a second GM build or will it most likely just be fixed in the build released to the public next week?

I have a tricky one here. Downloaded latest ipsw file and itunes beta 9 and get the same problem as some others my device isnt eligible for the upgrade. Read that restoring to factory settings and then trying to upgrade is the way to go but when i try a simple restore I get the same message. your device isnt elegible for the requested build. I have a i5 2010 macbook pro and a 32gb wifi ipad2 which has never beeb jailbroken. I also have my itunes library on a nas drive.

Any help appreciated.

GM is typically the end of the road, showstoppers have been weeded out by this point.

What is the file name of the ipsw, sounds like you have one of the betas and I'm guessing you don't have a dev account?

Take a look at this: http://leimobile.com/this-device-isnt-eligible-for-the-requested-build/

While your device has never been jailbroken it could still be the case that your host file (for whatever reason) blocks connection to the Apple servers needed for the activation.
