Only complaint about the iPad mini video is how they completely murdered one of my favourite songs (Age of Consent by New Order).

Distracting to the point that I didn't hear anything Ive said. Except aloominium. Oh, and that the cover is so much better because it's all one color. Huh?!?

What a disappointing keynote. New innovation was missing. Apple simply recycled existing products. No wonder their stock dropped 20 points after the keynote. More to come...
Ha, talk about recycling....you're comment couldn't be any more predictable. :D

and no mention of the the new iTunes, the only thing i was looking forward to ^^ missed opportunity, they must have run into some last minute difficulties with it i guess

Poor Jony, he must reek after wearing the same T-shirt for 10 years and being locked inside a white room where they have him say random adjectives they can edit together to promote any product they want.

"It's magicifantly amazilicious."

"Cut, print, next."

"The exquisite chromesticity of the diamond polished chamfered anodized aluminium unibody edge provides a perpendicularly pontificant and lush contrast to the rugged aesthetic of the silky crispness of the hammered bezel that appears to float in mid air"

"Cut, print, next."

"And to think that something so thin and so light could be lighter than something so thin..."

"Cut, print, next."

"You want to lick it with your penis."

"Cut, print, next."

"AluminIum".

"Cut, print."

LMAO!!! Why can I actualy see and hear him saying things like that? :D :D

"If all that we had done was take the original iPad and just reduce it, all that you would be aware of was everything that was just missing. There is inherent loss in just reducing a product in size.

What we did, was we went back to the very beginning and we took the time to design a product that was a concentration of, and not a reduction of, the original."

Wow, the marketing bs is blowing me away!

Exactly! Complete BS!! All they did was reduce the size, DROP the screen rez, and stuff it in a smaller box with a new name. Nothing wrong about that (other than the screen rez) but PUH-LEASE don't try to tell me you spent months/years of new thinking and design. Most Fanboys wouldn't even believe that crock of _____.

Jony is a bona fide genius. And he's a Knight! I sure hope he has a suit of shining armor at home - he deserves it.

Amazing. Powerful. Magical. All true, but these are mere words. They don't do the iPad Mini justice.

I wish Jony were to use the description which really applies: The iPad Mini is Miraculous; it is a gift from God Almighty, and Jony is a modern-day prophet, channeling supernatural powers from beyond space and time!

New innovations such as what? What do you think is missing from their product portfolio?

Very often the innovations that Apple does are hidden to the user.

I was happy with the new products they launched although I would have liked to see more product re-designs. The Mac Mini and iMac are basically the same as before. We haven't seen any radical re-designs for some time now.

Totally agree... when I heard that line in the launch yesterday, I almost puked. Don't get me wrong.. I love Apple products (1 Apple IIe, 4 iPhones, 2 Mac Book Pros, 1 iPad)...but the BS about the mini being a "concentration of, and not a reduction" is marketing spin that makes me want to yak. Frankly it turns me off... they could have left it at "you can hold it in one hand, it's lighter, and you still get the same experience as the full-sized iPad" and that would have gotten the message across just fine.

Seems like Apple is trying too hard this time and it's not needed.

Has anyone noticed the new background image of the keynote presentation? It used to have this black/purple gradient, at least since the Mac OS X introduction keynote. This time they used a black/grey gradient, and I noticed it immediately. I wonder why they changed it now.

What do we think the timetable is on the leather iPad mini smart covers?

A black/slate mini with a black leather smart cover is .

Hopefully in time for Christmas

No aluminium hinge that attaches it to the iPad - I love that. Mine would scuff up the side of the iPad....had it replaced once (for free from Apple) as it was breaking open and leaking some kinda of metallic dust.

It's a promotional video....of course its filled with marketing mumbo jumbo.

However, I think the point was they didn't take the same design and shrink it - more rounded edges, thinner bezels, overall MUCH thinner design. They want it to be differentiated by more than just the size - which I think they succeeded in. I like the new design.

Eh, Jony Ive has been moved to my "he just annoys me" list. I know you need to be inspired by your work, but he just spews BS and expects everyone to fall in love with everything. The iPad mini is a small version of the iPad. For Pete's sake, look at it's name. If you want to call it a "concentration" not a reduction, fine whatever. But get over it. When you know you have to go out of your way to market and describe something that is just a smaller product, maybe you should just admit that it's not groundbreaking and is simply a product to fill in a consumer-demanded piece of the puzzle. That's ok, you know...

Strike the pose

It seems like every video of Jony Ive starts with his "iconic" head-tilted on the side of the frame 3/4 of a body shot.

Just maybe change the shirt, but same look, every time.

Ives

Ah to see Jony Ive's cocked head against a white background. All is right with the world. Scott Forstall looked bored though. Surprised we didn't get an update on maps.

And why hi dont shave his chest this is so gross :D

Is there a shirt crisis at Apple?

Why do people always seem to wear the same shirt / t-shirt ALL THE TIME? I mean, we all have that one shirt or T were we look really good, and we might wear it often, but we don't wear it ALL THE TIME.

Apple and Hyperbole just became synonymous

Seriously, is it even possible for Apple to release a product without excessive hyperbole?

If you played a drinking game during an Apple Keynote speech and took a shot every time you heard a statement with excessive and extraneous hyperbole, you would die from alcohol poisoning.

iPad Mini is last year's tech in a smaller form factor. The iPhone 5 and iPod Touch have newer technology in a significantly smaller form factor, it didn't take any amazing innovation to create the iPad Mini. So Apple, just say you shrunk the iPad 2 and end it.

Everyone whinging about Jony Ive's BS - you must be incredibly dumb to think that Jony comes up with this marketing Spiel. It's clearly being spoon fed to him by Apple's marketing and PR teams, he merely voices it.

But they didn't just shrink the iPad 2 (in all seriousness)....

More ppi, newer screen tech (which they didn't go into but I'm sure had to implement based on the profile of the device), same cameras as the retina iPad and an A5 chip more than adequate for the users of a device this size.

Oh and it's a totally different design as well.

Why can't people just be happy and accept the fact that Apple now offers a cheaper, smaller iPad that will fit the needs of more people and in some cases fill a need better than the larger iPad can/did? Hell, none of us have even seen or used it in person.....based on past experience with Apple products, I believe this iPad mini will fill a role in my mobile computing life - I reserve all judgements about how "amazing" or "crappy" the device is, until I actually get my hands on it.

I laughed out loud when I read this post, I don't think it would have been half as funny without the "Cut, print, next."

This should be posted on the MR home page as a sticky for all to see!!

The "And to think that something so thin and so light could be lighter than something so thin..." did it for me. ;-) Very funny.

Things they consciously did:

1. Kept the same resolution as the original iPad and iPad 2 to ensure app compatibility.
2. Ensured that app elements (buttons) following their user interface guidelines would be the same size on the iPad mini as on the iPhone.
2. Kept the same pixel density of the original iPhone through iPhone 3GS (which is higher than the iPad 2 by the way), but applied their latest manufacturing techniques to keep it up to date.

Yes, Apple is a marketing machine, but from the looks of it, they did go back to the beginning too. Before you write things off as marketing BS, you should probably make an effort to understand what sort of considerations were actually made during the design process.

The smart cover add is divine. I like how Ive says al-oo-mini-um. This will be my main e-reader now (avoir Kindle!). Now whether to get it in black or white...hrm.
