I'm a soon-to-be switcher, and it's funny how everybody (myself included) is so giddy and excited about Leopard. When Microsoft announces a new version of Windows, the reactions among PC people are usually those of loathing and dread, probably because they just spent 3+ years getting the current version of Windows to operate properly. I don't recall people planning to line up outside of Best Buy to purchase Vista the minute it's released.

Yea. I am of the mentality that Microsoft never planned on having to do any serious upgrading of their OS and did poor programming as a result of that. That and Microsoft doesn't innovate on things as well as other people and relies on their past successes to halt any real progress and implement half of what people really need.

They are chained to their dependancy on legacy support just as Apple did. At least Apple spent time using open standards to build a system that was designed to be updated and could be done so easily. MS cannot radically redesign the way Windows works without abandoning the legacy support of users who cannot upgrade. MS should have radically re-designed their system properly and openly (that is another problem proprietary thinking) long ago before their base got as large as it did. Billionaire Monopolist Bill Gates had no motive to do that since they control everything. Why change anything when it is cheaper to maintain the status quo (think internet explorer).

Apple made sure that upgrading would be easier, they learned from the past and kept things simple. MS cannot do this without basically shattering their market position - something they will never do. They are too big and too rich to have any reason to. People are too entrenched with windows.

The tech specs say the bigger the hard drive, the more time machine data you can have. Time machine will also let you know that it's starting to delete stuff.

I think if the ext-hd is not there, TM does nothing.

I'm excited about Time Machine, but for me there a lot of questions:
Has anybody seen any recommendations for the size of the TM hard drive? Can I easily move the TM data to a bigger hard drive? What happens if you use a laptop without the TM hard drive? Will the TM information temporarily stored on the laptop and then updated on the external hard drive once you reconnect it or do you lose it?

I wonder if you can flatted the dock in the options. I really don't like that 3D look. I prefer to dock it on the right like NextStep did in raised 3d boxes. Works great with wide displays.

Switching to Mac - Need advice on what to buy.

I have been a PC user for over 15 years. After purchasing an Iphone, I found the interface to be very intuitive which lead me to due some research on Mac's in general. I am very impressed with what I see.

I am going to wait till Leopard is released but I need some advice on what to purchase in terms of a system.

It will be for home use with some presentations and spreadsheets being generated for work. I also play some PC based games.

I am interested in getting a Macbook Pro and either an IMac or a Mac Pro. I read that there is a possibility of both the Macbook Pro and Mac Pro's being updated in the near future.

Any recommendations on whether to get an IMac vs. waiting for a Mac Pro. Also, should I hold off on the Macbook Pro until the new ones come out?

Thank you in advance for the advice.

You cannot (at least with the latest dev. builds) flatten the dock, but Cleardock lets you do it :)

Prepared for Shipment!

My order status now says "Prepared for Shipment". I wonder if it will by any chance be shipping early! :)

This really should be in it's own thread under buying advice (if you want to get the most/best answers). But in short - MacBook Pro is still pretty fresh, the macbooks will see updates first. Mac Pro's are aged and will SOON SOON be replaced. iMacs were just updated, but keep in mind the iMac has a glossy screen = turn off for many. For home use with some presentations and a bit of gaming you don't really need a mac pro, which is more suitable for video editing, graphics, etc ,etc. The iMac should suit you fine. You can even max it out w/ 2.8 extreme processor and 4 gb (3rd party of course) ram.

Now, back to leopard.

It's Common Knowledge Each System Is Faster Than The Previous System Not Speculation

Do you have any proof of this? Have benchmarks been run on identical hardware with clean installs of each operating system generation? I highly doubt that upgrading the OS improves performance of installed applications. Likely you just have less junk on a new system and it feels faster :) If you have real benchmarks please provide a link, otherwise, lets not speculate.
Barefeats.com. I am not speculating. It's a known FACT.

Seriously. I don't know how so many people missed the features introduced at WWDC? Over-hyped secrets that didn't meet expectations I guess .

Oh well, the good thing is leopard looks like the most useful and productive OS X upgrade so far. I am looking forward to using spaces just as much or more than expose!

Yes, I saw nothing in July that warranted the hype of 'top secret features' (I mean features that hadn't been shown off previously).

On the other hand, having a 'remote desktop' feature built into iChat is quite amazing - I can't believe they're not making a bigger deal of this.

Leopard Will Support BOTH HD-DVD & Blu-ray® DVD Playback & Recording

Regarding Leopard HD-DVD support:
Considering Apple are in the group of companies supporting Blu Ray i doubt it
Apple also a member of the HD-DVD group and Leopard will support both formats. The idea they would support only one format when DVD Studio Pro 4 has supported HD-DVD Creation for more than a year is absurd.

iMac is really convenient and powerful enough for most applications including most games. When it comes to PC gaming you are always better off with a PC given the GPU options although a Mac Pro is better than an iMac given it's open architecture. The downsides to a Mac Pro are the lack of iSight (if that matters to you) and the size.

Hmm well you need to do some research on your own. But listen, every Mac you get has all the amse software on it. The only difference is hardware. If you really like to play high end games then get a Mac G5 or something like that. But if you like playing games like The Sims, WoW, C&C3 and other games like that, then get a MacBook or iMac.

You can check out all the tech specs on Apple's site.

adobe on leopard?

does anyone know if adobe software (photoshop, illustrator, etc.) is functional on leopard? i know a couple weeks ago adobe put out a warning that they hadn't fully tested everything yet, but i'm just curious to know if any of the developers that have been using leopard used those programs.

i can't wait until my copy of leopard shows up friday!

Mine says the same :) However, what this means is that its ready for Apple to give the package to FedEx - which really does not mean a lot. When I got iWork 08/ iLife 08 it said that for two days. Then FedEx had it for a few more days even though I am less than two hours from where it shipped. I really dislike using FedEx....

I ordered a hard drive from Apples website on Tuesday at 3:30 pm. I chose 5 day shipping. I had it at my house in less than 24 hours. FedEx seems to send the things you don't want or need right away and the things your craving they somehow seem to always take their sweet time with...

Is this a return of the mobile home folders we were going to see in Tiger ?

External Accounts is a new Portable Home Directory feature that allows you to store a user’s home directory on a portable FireWire or USB drive. The account can be fully managed using Workgroup Manager and protected using FileVault.

Well if your running OSX 10.5 SERVER it mimics the rumored portable home directory - however you have to be running the Server software.

In a way Microsoft did quite a bit with Vista... But its still built on the old OS. Its like they just tried to upgrade and patch XP. The result is a very confusing OS. There are JUST TO MANY windows and options and pull downs its a bloody mess. What is unfortunate they tried so Hard and spent so much time for Vista. I sort of feel sorry for the developers of Vista.

I see Leopard as a small leap for OS X things changed but nothing to radical and they made the OS even quicker to use. The Upgrades Apple made were smart and cut down on clutter and menu options... made things more simple. This is where Vista fails ... everything is actually harder to do.
