Garage Band alone looks to be almost worth the price of admission. Apple just killed a lot of other musical apps right there.

Anybody have the inside-track to Verizon pricing for iPad data plans? Will it be similar to what they offer on the MiFi now but without any sort of contract? (e.g.: 1GB for $20 and 3GB for $30)?

I'm thinking I may stick with AT&T for iPhone and get a Verizon iPad 2 and then I will be covered on vacation anywhere. That is, if AT&T signal is good I can optimize my bandwidth go ahead and do the WiFi hotspot from the iPhone to the iPad BUT if AT&T coverage is lacking then I can purchase a Verizon data plan on the iPad and still have decent internet access.

Well, just because I am new to this forum, doesn't mean I have no idea.
So, even if MS had an office suite for iOS, you just simply could not work (efficiently) with the iPad. Screen is too small, touch keyboard, etc. If you want to do serious work, you are still bound to work on a laptop or desktop. Sorry, there is and there won't be any way past that. IPad screen size is just too small and don't tell me you can type as fast on the iPad as on a regular keyboard ;)
But if you take the iPad for what it is, it's an ok gadget I guess.
Sorry, but I just can't seriously see anyone use it at work to do some actual work on it  Well, maybe for Garageband or iMovie, but who cares about that? Besides, can anyone imagine a huge hollywood Studio going: "OK, we are gonna cut this new blockbuster on the iPad instead of on professional machines". The iPad is a toy, nothing else.

Well, screen size aside you do know that you can pair an external blue tooth keyboard right? And with the iPad 2 you can mirror to a big screen TV with HDMI.

I was with you on your first post because sometimes it's a little daunting with a new device that you're not sure what to do with it. Although saying Microsoft Office on it as a deterrent means it's instantly not a productivity device is a little rich too.

And you haven't been keeping up with current events evidently because movie and TV studio's are using the iPad in production...and I guess all those doctors that use it in hospitals and stuff are just playing games too?

I think you need to research a little more...it's ok if you just don't want it...but to dismiss as a toy is going a little too far. You're drinking a little too much of the anti-apple kool-aid.

If hackers could find a way to port WebOS on this hardware, I'd be in tablet heaven.

I think WebOS is the king of mobile platforms and I'm excited to see HP's deep pockets take it over. iOS/Android tie it up for 2nd place and I frankly couldn't care less for RIM's tablet offering.

What's incredible is that Jobs put up a giant screen with that Samsung transcript mistake (sales were "small" instead of the correct "smooth").

Nothing like trying to put down the competition, but instead demonstrating a personal and corporate lack of knowledge of current events.

Apparently Apple and Jobs need to read MacRumors more often, so that they can be at least as well informed as the people here.

Jobs pandering to the Chinese, "it's the year of..."

Very smart move.

Now each year going forward Apple can insert a product in and China will go wild with excitement.

Clever Steve, always scheming for more money.

You say that as if it is a good thing.

I didn't mean it to sound that way. It just reflected my thought process. When I saw the Garage Band demo I was really impressed. Then I wondered how on earth all those smaller developers were going to compete with that. Perhaps I should have started by asking… Would you like the good news about Garage Band first, or the bad news?

I wonder why it didn't air live? You could follow it via live video feed on CNN fortunately. But it was odd not having Apple allow greater access to such a free marketing opportunity.
Who knows. Maybe they think the bandwidth costs too much... Maybe they got burned by that iPhone 4 keynote where Steve had to ask everyone to turn off their wireless stuff and put it on the floor where he could see it... Or maybe Melissa Leo was in the front row and Apple didn't want to take chances.

The last iBook was discontinued in 2006. Just think how lucky you are to have a laptop that is still working after five years (could you say the same of a PC?). And no , I am not an Apple fanboy, but an IT support professional in an education environment still maintaining eMacs for goodness sake when most of our PC desktops of the same era died long ago... and you don't say what OS you are running, how much RAM is installed, how up-to-date your OS is... Griping for the sake of it methinks.

Easy there Hos!

Not griping. The streaming page says I need to upgrade my Quicktime and that I need Snow Leopard. As you know 10.6 cuts out PPC streaming as that version of OS X is Intel only. PPC Macs can not stream this presentation.

I'm simply stating a fact, not crying in my panties.

Actually I can double that with a 7 year laptop still working great for most things can't say that even for some new laptops.

Our iBook is the Spring 2004, 1Ghz with 1.25 RAM. It ran the MP4 download of the iPad 2 presentation fine, but streaming is now out for all PPC's. Seeing as Youtube streaming is a mess I am fine with not being able to stream Apple's presentation. It would have been almost useless to watch in streaming format.

Of course its a good thing. Other devs have everything they need to bring a better app to the table...except maybe the creativity, musical experts on staff, etc...

LOL yea ok...you're informed. Right.

Please edit your post and add at least one of the following drivel statements
LOL! Good list.

1. Anyway, it's just a big iPod.
You know, I never quite understood this insult. I know people buy the iPod Touch mainly for gaming and so it might look like a "toy" but you can use it for research, business, navigation and other very un-toy-like things. And it's quite a brilliant little device.

So, isn't saying "It's just a big iPod Touch" rather like saying, "It's just a bigger Michelangelo" or "It's just another, bigger play by Shakespeare" or "It's just a bigger Hubble telescope"?

If the iPad is being used by doctors in hospitals, businesses, and schools to heal, do business, teach, then it's no toy. Big iPod or not, it's a serious device that can be used to do real work. And if no device, be it a phone, hand-held gaming tool or tablet changed how we work, taught, learned or healed people before Apple's phone/gaming tool/tablet, then Apple's phone/gaming tool/tablet can't be viewed as toys even if they can be used to play games. They must be taken as seriously transforming to humanity as the printing press or the light bulb or global satellites.

I think, from now on, when someone says "It's just a big iPhone" or "iPod Touch," I'll say, "So it's an even bigger work of genius? Awesome!"

The ovation and applause for Steve was really neat. This has to be beneficial (I would think) to his health. A feeling of support can never be a detriment. He certainly had to feel supported there.

I really was happy to see him. And he looked positive and excited.

What exactly do you think his job is as a CEO ????

Does the rear camera take pictures?

I noticed on apple's site that it only mentions hd video recording for the back camera. Obviously the front one can with the new photo booth app (which is awesome by the way). But I haven't seen any evidence of picture taking on the back one. Any ideas? Thanks.:apple:

as usual, the stream is pixelated, choppy, and constantly starts and stops (i have a 12 mb dsl connection). apple sucks at the internet.

I think I got your missing bits, maybe.

Clear, smooth, no glitches at all here.

It was great seeing Steve!

And the new iPad is an incredible leap forward for the platform. All rivals appear to be standing still. It's so obvious that Moto and Samsung and HP were competing against last year's model.

Well worth watching this keynote.

2011 is (also) the year of the iPad!

:apple:

How is Moto and Samsung and HP were competing against last year's model? As my knowledge, most rivals have integrated the camera in their tables and some of the table had dual core processor too. Last year's model doesn't have integrated camera nor does it have dual core processor. Vast majority table have last least one USB port, iPad has non. I believe 2011 year will be year of competition starts. I would like see all tablets get released (i.e. Blackberry's Playbook, Dell's Windows table).

Also, too bad i don't have Quick Time player installed on any of my Windows computer and i gave my Macbook to my parents with Windows installed (also deleted Mac OS X)... So i can't watch the video...

How is Moto and Samsung and HP were competing against last year's model?...
Because they were trying to exceed the experience provided by the original iPad. They tried to compete on specs because they couldn't compete in OS, application support or value. So they (Sammie and Moto) have produced tablets with great specs but nothing further. Now Apple is out with iPad 2, similar specs, and all the other advantages from before. The other manufacturers look like they're standing still, competing against last year's iPad.

Also, too bad i don't have Quick Time player installed on any of my Windows computer and i gave my Macbook to my parents with Windows installed (also deleted Mac OS X)... So i can't watch the video...
That's just silly. Download Quicktime or iTunes and watch the keynote. You don't know what you're missing if you haven't seen it.
