Good on Stevo, getting up there to keep the shareholders happy. The guy has practically given his life to turn :apple: from near bankruptcy to one of the richest companies on earth. Whatever you wanna hate on the products, you should not offend him personally.
Funny enough the keynote crashed my firefox but worked fine on all safari devices.
GarageBand looks cool, and the integration with desktops finally makes the iPad a viable music creation tool. Well done to the engineers for making it ipad1 compatible.

The comedy stylings of Scott Forstall

Previously, I've always found Scott Forstall to be a little bit creepy when he appeared at Apple keynotes. A bit too enthusiastic, like he had been brainwashed or something.

However, I just watched his section from yesterday and thought he was really good! You might say the throwaway gag-lines he kept dropping in were a bit corny ("that's the picture I used when I met my wife", "Michael's been locked in a very sad cafe...you can imagine if he had kids or something this would be fun to look at", "I told him to bring a box of puppies but I guess he didn't" etc) but I thought it really gave a human touch to proceedings.

Anyway, it's just a thought. I think that sort of thing probably plays well with the wider public. Some people (often the anti-Apple brigade) get very annoyed by Steve saying things like "this is a magical product", but Scott's section was a good demonstration of what normal everyday people will actually DO with the iPad. Apple should make more use of him in keynotes!

Funny moment in the whole video is when he is introducing the smart cover and says: there are 2 types, one made of polyurethane which is used to make spacesuits, and the other is made of leather (then he pauses, and you know he had to force himself to not say, "which is used to make cows?")

one million points to you sir!

Not sure if it's me, but Steve is talking really slowly, pausing a lot and looks like he's momentarily forgetting parts of his speech (he probably has teleprompters but that's what it looks like), like when he's summaring/listing the features of the iPad, he almost stops before saying 'Facetime camera'.

I thought this to he looked well but something wasn't quite right about him.

Steve sure gives lip service to open standards and HTML5, but when push comes to shove we can't see iPad release events...on iPads. Don't get me started on how awful QuickTime is on Windows either.

It works perfectly on the iPad, I watched the whole event on my iPad this morning!!

So anybody gonna get and iPad 2 when your iPad 1 is less than a year old?
I hate to say it but I'm dumping mine first chance I get for one of these new ones. I need that Garage Band App.

The GarageBand App will work on your existing iPad.

as usual, the stream is pixelated, choppy, and constantly starts and stops (i have a 12 mb dsl connection). apple sucks at the internet.

Works for me. Perfectly in fact. At one point I could have sworn it was 720p. Have you made sure you're using the latest version of Safari/Quicktime/iTunes/All that other stuff?

New in this forum & thoughts on new iPad2

I have been reading this forum for quite some time now. So today, I figured I register myself so I can write my opinion in here.

So, I was holding out to buy an iPad, since I figured the new iPad 2 is going to lots better then the old version. So, sadly, it turned out to be pretty much nothing else then a spec bump. the iPad is still not a tool for content creation (no MS office and such). The cover on the iPad 2 is a really cool thing, but in reality just a nice gimmick, that is not really needed (for sure not for $50!).
The good thing out of all this, is that the iPad1 is down in pricing now by like 120 Bucks! So I will go grab me an iPad1 today and save me some money. So, I guess the wait was worth it after all :)
All I'm gonna do with it is surf the web and check emails. Honestly, I don't think you can use the iPad seriously for anything else then that. So, for my purpose the old version will be just fine (16GB WiFi).
If I happen to like it and perhaps realize that I can use it for other tasks as well, I will just wait for the iPad3, which wil probably come out in a year or so (I don't believe in those BS rumors of iPad3 realease later this year). I think oposed to iPad2 the third version will be a major update (Kind of like the Tick-Tock cycle of Intel: First something new, then spec bump, then something new again).

I am still hoping I'm not throwing my money away, and that like after 2 weeks the iPad will be in the corner somewhere collecting dust
I guess I will see.:)

WTF? Please tell me one feature that would have made you buy the iPad 2? And please don't talk about Apps, because that has nothing to do with the iPad. Software can come out at any time and doesn't need a keynote.

As for content creation, again WTF? If all you want is MS Office, why aren't you bitching to Microsoft. You know who makes MS Office don't you? Hint: there are plenty of reasonably full featured content creation apps, including Apple's own Office suite, music and movie editing (you saw the keynote).

Nice troll though. 2/10 for a beginner. Keep at it!

The new iPad looks great, I'm glad it comes in white now.. But still Its not something I'll be getting, primarily because I have no use for it, and its expensive, I'd rather upgrade my PC instead.. I have used iPad a few times, and the experience is pretty good, but it can't replace a desktop for the work I do..

This kind of reasonable, well researched, non-biased, personal thoughts seem oddly out of place on MR. Please edit your post and add at least one of the following drivel statements:

1. Anyway, it's just a big iPod.
2. And there's no proper multitasking
3. The <vapour tablet> is SOOO much better
4. Pfff just a spec bump so I won't buy one (?)
5. I think I'll wait for the retina display
6. No content creation
7. No USB/P port (which you're going to use for what?)
8. Who needs a rear facing camera anyway?

Well, just because I am new to this forum, doesn't mean I have no idea.
So, even if MS had an office suite for iOS, you just simply could not work (efficiently) with the iPad. Screen is too small, touch keyboard, etc. If you want to do serious work, you are still bound to work on a laptop or desktop. Sorry, there is and there won't be any way past that. IPad screen size is just too small and don't tell me you can type as fast on the iPad as on a regular keyboard ;)
But if you take the iPad for what it is, it's an ok gadget I guess.
Sorry, but I just can't seriously see anyone use it at work to do some actual work on it  Well, maybe for Garageband or iMovie, but who cares about that? Besides, can anyone imagine a huge hollywood Studio going: "OK, we are gonna cut this new blockbuster on the iPad instead of on professional machines". The iPad is a toy, nothing else.

You clearly need a MacBook Pro.

To be fair, there are indeed a growing number of content creation apps appearing on the iPad that are fully leveraging the Touch Interface, rather than a straight swap out of a traditional keyboard input mode. As a further example at my work we are developing statistical dashboard apps and corporate content/approval workflow widgets for the iOS platform targeting our executive staff who are increasingly using the iPad as their main platform.

However, currently it is true to say the iPad is primarily a fantastic, intuitive, unrivalled platform for portable content consumption. As such today it is a perfect complement to an existing desktop/laptop configuration, but over time I can see this changing to a true either/or option ...

That's great. Did they say when the Garage Band App will be available?
I'm itching to try it.

Also it was amazing to see how iPads are making in roads in the Education market. I guess that has always been one of Apple's strong areas.

Interesting how this sat ominously empty before the keynote..

It's an LC2 and they're great. I have two in my seating area along with an LC3.

Highly recommended.

4G/LTE. Had 50Mb service since the end of 2009. Would be nice to see Apple implement 4g. Instead, international customers get the shaft again from Apple.

Spec-wise most others offer 4G/LTE :(

Don't wait any longer. This device can and will improve your life. People spend hours a day relaxing and learning on these devices. You can take them anywhere with you. You won't regret it. Get a larger capacity if you can. At least 32 Gb.

You know the bit bout Garageband, and iMovie? Well, they're content creation apps, so are Pages, and Keynote, then there are the 1,000s of apps that are available on the app store...

If you aren't going to buy an iPad2 then that is totally your prerogative, but don't jump on the 'it's only a spec bump' bandwagon cos no-one believes them.... (they're just the usual haters that are fast running out of reasons. At least last year they got some mileage out of 'it isn't a real computer', or the even funnier 'net-books will crush the iPad')

To prove that it isn't just a spec bump, pick-up an iPad1, then an iPad2. Do they look or feel exactly the same? No. Do they have the same features? No. Ergo, they are different.
And if you only want to surf the net and check emails why are you so worried about content creation anyway??

You might not get one, but come March 25th when they arrive in Japan, I most certainly will.....22days and counting ....

The reason why they brought Steve over was due to lack luster nature of iPad2. Only Steve could put positive spin on it. I love the original including the design. Waiting for iPad3...

+1, yup. Steve truly is awesome.
