Ummmmm, considering I talked about how it would be in the iPod, and how Apple no longer updates their computers, just their iPods, I assumed everyone would know I was joking. In case you're still confused, I was joking about the G6 being in the new iPods.

Care to share any of them with us?

Well I am in the market for a laptop and want to go mac but had trouble deciding between the iBook and Powerbook. If I can get the Internals of a 15' PB in a 14' iBook case... thats what I want :) Hopefully I can see in this update :D

Go Kirk ;)

Anyway, Appleinsider added this today

According to an unconfirmed tip, among the many configurations planned for release are a

12-inch 1GHz G4 iBook equipped with a 30 GB hard drive, 256 MB RAM, and a Combo Drive.

The low-end 14-inch iBook model will reportedly pack a 1GHz processor, 40 GB hard drive, 256 MB RAM, and Combo Drive.

MacNN Confirms....

And they usually are late to report everything.

If I had a Powerbook/iBook on order, I would cancel, but that is just me.

MacNN isn't late, but they are not really a rumor site. They are more a news site, with a pretty good group on their forum. It is pretty rare to see a rumor on their home page.

I totally agree about cancelling orders, I would too. I haven't seen this many update rumors in a while, hope they are true!

NEW POWERBOOKS

im going to go ahead and say it, NEW POWERBOOKS ARE GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT WEEK.

therefor i will be receiving my newly updated 15" after about a month just to make sure that if there are any kinks to be worked out they will have been.

if you ordered one already, i would definatly say cancel it and wait to see what the new pricings are (if any)

-soon to be converted Dude

P.S. hoping for a G5 even though i can now accept that it's not going to happen this time around

It really doesn't make a difference. As soon as you open a mac, the next one comes out in a month or so. Just plan on not having the latest and greatest and you will never be disappointed.

Is that a joke? New ones out in a month or two?

I think that its obvious that its going to be G4's across the all upgrades
especially since there is G5 troubles.

I don't that the issue is G4 or G5 , its the heat ratio.

Why are there so many people still talking about G5 heat when the specs show that a G5 is cooler at a higher speed.

A G5 at 1.4 would be even cooler running.

Enough of the heat thing, ok?

Um, no. The processor is but one chip in an array of chips needing to be cooled and made smaller. Apple releasing a G5 PB is not simply slapping one in and cooling it.

I work for the the largest Apple reseller in Australia, yesterday we received a mass email from our Director making sure we invoice out all ordered PowerBooks by end of days trading, and tracking all PowerBooks in stock for price protection.

We expect the new powerbooks sometime next week.

Awesome. I thought they would be weeks hitting our shores.

Now the decision, are the new PBs going to be good enough for me to buy now, or will my idealistic desire for a G5PB make me hold off...

Even though I would love a G5PB, I am buying whatever is released next week.

I now have seen 3 contradicting reports of what the specs will be.

From Croquer Dans La (Croquer.free.fr):
M9418LL/A iBook 14, Combo, 1.25 Ghz
M9419LL/A iBook 14, Superdrive, 1.33Ghz
M9426LL/A iBook 12, 1 Ghz

M9183LL/A Powerbook 12 Combo 1.33 Ghz
M9184LL/A Powerbook 12 Superdrive 1.33 Ghz
M9421LL/A Powerbook 15 Combo 1.42 Ghz
M9422LL/A Powerbook 15 Superdrive 1.42 Ghz
M9462LL/A Powerbook 17, 1.5 Ghz

From the user Nemesis in this thread (post #170 on page 7):
- The 17" model will utilise 1.6 GHz G5 processor!
- Top 15" model will utilise 1.4 GHz G5 processor!
- Other models, plus iBooks, will run on updated G4s

From AppleInsider:
"All models are said to feature faster G4 processors"
Low-end 12-inch iBook 1GHz G4, 30 GB hd, 256 MB RAM, Combo Drive
Low-end 14-inch iBook 1GHz G4, 40 GB hd, 256 MB RAM, Combo Drive

I guess all we can do now is wait and see who is right. :)

Edit: grammer

Of course, you can also have an unblemished track record if its your FIRST rumour leak.:

Actually, if it is a FIRST rumour leak then a track record has not yet been established and so cannot be unblemished. Something must first exist before it can be either blemished or unblemished. I apologize for being so nitpicky. :)

Back on topic, I really hope they do update the portables. It is definitely needed.

PBs in Oz

Aren't you bummed that the price of powerbooks in Australia is so much higher than anywhere else? The Canadian dollar is almost identical to the Australian dollar, but the price of any powerbook is much higher in Oz. I'm moving to Sydney in May and I plan to buy a PB from Canada before I leave.

I think it's funny that notebook updates could cause such a commotion. Wintel machine manufacturers are always updating components as they become available, and no one really makes a buzz about it. Dell doesn't have big press releases every time a new chip gets stuck in one of their notebooks. Sure, they release redesigns and new models, but to pretty much nonexistent fanfare! However, next week's Apple Notebook update seems to be in line with the way the wintel world does things - simple updates because the technology has taken a step forward.

I do appreciate that it seems everything Apple does is a labor of love. Each product is a piece of art. Dell can churn out a new plastic shell in no time, and throw a ton of new stuff inside, stick a new number on it, and BAAM, a new model for Dell. Sure Dell machines are solid, well built, and have great support, but why must they be so BUTT ugly!? Why is Apple the only company with a dedication to design, aesthetic, and product cohesiveness?

Anyways...my kudos to Apple for the dedication to design...and from the sounds of this update, they may be picking up business tactics from the world outside Apple's windows...which means good stuff for Apple owners!

Can't wait to order my new iBook!

Laptops are fine and all but...

I'd kill for standalone, headless server for my laptop(s) at home. Something small, quiet, and with the guts of even the new eMac. Keep it reasonably expandable (extra Firewire ports, etc.) and I'd be a happy camper...

I think it goes to confusion over what everybody means by "track record."

If you take as a definition "track records are sets of prior predictions together with whether or not each prediction was borne out" I would have said that an empty track record is both blemished and unblemished. You can say anything you like about the empty set (in this case, the set of prior predictions made by a first timer) and the statement is logically true. So if the criterion for an unblemished track record is "all prior predictions were borne out," well that's true for an empty track record. As well, for a blemished track record, "some prior predictions were not borne out," that's also true for an empty track record. But weird.

Then, I guess if you take as a definition "track records are non-empty sets of prior predictions together with whether or not each prediction was borne out," then you've done away with the weirdness surrounding empty track records being simultaneously blemished and unblemished, which I guess is a good thing.

But I know that I've now reached a level of nitpickiness most people don't reach without degrees in philosophy or math, and I apologise for delurking on this.

Dreaming of detachable screens...

I agree with many of the posters who have stated that a G5 PB is not in the cards for next week. I would take that argument even further and suggest that we probably won't see a G5 PB until they unveil a 64-Bit OS to go with it. Not WWDC. Probably not until MWSF. I would love to be wrong on this, but I think:

1) NAB is way too small an event to launch such a major product. And take a look at NAB's website - Apple isn't even a major exhibitor at the show. The only scheduled speaker from Apple that I saw was from the Quicktime team.

2) WWDC is going to be showing off the G5 tower at 3 Ghz (which probably won't ship until much, much later) and a new line of displays. Maybe an iMac upgrade and price drop.

The next appropriate event for such an introduction would probably be MWSF.

One thing I definitely expect from NAB: New version of Quicktime.

And now, on the way-out-there front, does anyone think it possible that we could see something completely unexpected in the new PBs? How about a solar panel embedded somewhere to juice the battery when you work outdoors or by a window? How about a screen that swivels, or (better yet) is detachable. It could snap into place for normal use, or be connected via ADC and set in a cradle. How hard would that rock? How many shoulder and back muscles would be forever grateful?

(SuperChuck now frowns and returns to the real world, where modest speed bumps and a freaking video card upgrade is supposed to make everybody jump for joy on Sunday.)

I agree don't really expect much from NAB. Hopefully my 6 Pro key will still work with 7. I would be in shock if any thing more happens.

We are definitely putting a lot onto Steve to produce at WWDC. I don't really think that Apple will come out with a detachable screen, at least not soon.

Yeah, buy before you come. Hopefully you have family and friends left behind so that they can buy and ship/bring you stuff in the future to avoid the local prices. Things might change given the pricing of the emac, but now the Aussie is sliding again I dont know.

Dont' forget that their is likely to be power differences between our countries which may require you to carry a LOCAL power converter with your laptop...?

Thanks - but I think Apple's power adapter ramps down the voltage for you. All I should need is an AC plug that fits the Australian power outlets. I plan on buying a local converter anyway - but it would be nice if I didn't fry my soon-to-be fancy new G4 PB right when I get it.

Can anyone confirm whether a North American Apple power adapter will work in other countries with higher voltages without frying your computer?
